That's a good idea, be sure to take a stool sample with you so the vet can sell you the correct dewormer. You might want to have a blood sample drawn so you can get him started on heartworm preventer while you are at it. You can use one product that will protect him against fleas, as well as heartworms and intestinal worms if you want. Good luck. | Getting started on a heartworm preventer if he's not already is good advice! I don't, however, recommend doing the heartworm/flea combo meds. I had thought about doing this too, but after some discussion with my vet and researching a little on my own, I found out that the "pill" you give for heartworm that also prevents fleas, works like this: the adult flea has to actually bite you dog for the medicine to work and control any problem fleas. If you use another product (I'm most familiar with Frontline and how it works) it controls all stages of the flea life cycle, and the flea doesn't have to bite them to die. (Side note: if your dog is allergic to flea bites, this is definitely not a combo med I would use!!) What I use is actually Frontline Spray. It's not greasy/messy like the drops, and it's a ton cheaper too! It wouldn't be cheaper for a large dog, but we're talking about small dogs here! The recommended dosing is use the same number of sprays per pound of dog. My vet said just to get her good and damp all over with it, which is more than 3 sprays, but one 250 mL bottle should last me over a year and it only cost $25 at the vet. I still do it once a month like the drops (and just like the drops, no bath 2 days before or 2 days after applying so it will be effective all month)--I just do it the same day I do her heartworm meds every month. Easy-peasy and way less expensive than those drops! (Vet said that their more expensive because of packaging. Also, the spray was originally marketed for use on children with head lice. He said the bottle says not to ingest it, but it's totally safe. He sprayed it, stuck his finger in it, and licked it!!! Weirdo! :) ) I just wanted to let everyone know how those meds work. I know I don't want my baby getting bit by fleas if I can help it! |
