Switched from Hills SD to Royal Canin... now he's itchy all the time.. Could there be a food allergy going on here? Chewie was never a scratcher and about 2wks after I got him switched over to Royal Canin, he nibbling on whatever he can reach. I'm comparing the ingredients right now, trying to see what Royal Canin has that Hills SD didn't. Anyone have any thoughts? |
Not surprising...my girls had a bad reaction to RC. I've read lots of reports here of the same. :( |
Royal Canin makes some Yorkies terribly itchy. I would never recommend it because of this unless you had to go to a prescription diet made by then. I would switch foods. When my Yorkie ate RC, she even needed a steroid injection.:( |
Oh man  ...I guess I'll get him the same stuff that he used to eat tonight and hopefully we're not near the point where he needs a shot. |
i jsut got off royal canine coz my baby was scratching and scratching til he was raw. he's getting better but its only been about a week or two and i'm sure its gonna take alittle while to get out of his system. |
Awww, just when I thought I was helping to feed him better it's acutally making him sick :( |
Neither of those foods are very high quality- both are filled with by-products and grain. I would suggest going to the health section and browsing the sticky about free food samples and choosing one of those brands to try. |
I know Hills has Chicken by-products, but the ingredients of RC dont show any. Hills has been the only thing he's "tolerated", but he poops a lot. RC made him poop 1-2 times a day instead of 4-5. |
Corn is a HORRIBLE ingredient to put in a dog food, and RC has it, as well as two kinds of rice (in the top three ingredients) and beet pulp on down. You want to look for a food without any corn, which is one of the top ingredients to cause/aggravate allergies in our dogs. I like a dog food with a protein source as it's first two ingredients. |
Corn is probably what is causing the itch. There are lots of good doggie foods without those bad ingredients. You want something with human-grade ingredients. I feed Natural Balance Ultra-Premium Small Bites. She also likes Wellness, but the chunks are really too big for her for some reason. Another good one is Canadae. And now my mind is blank on any others. Forgive me!:D I also bake white chicken breast and feed that with her food as well. |
I only have the local Petsmart as my food resource and they dont stock any of those brands in that thread and I don't have time to order samples. So...I have to go for the next best thing. I need suggestions for food that I have the option to buy and the majority of the foods I'm reading ingredients on have some form of corn in it. I know it's not digested in dogs, just like in humans and there a higher likelyhood of allergy from it. If Chewie can eat Hills that has whole grain corn as the first ingredient with no problems (except extra poop), he should be able to eat anything else with corn in it. RC just had corn gluten which is on a deriviative of corn, not sure what its purpose is though. We've already tried Blue Buffalo and he would pick out the life source bits with vitamins and put them on the floor. He would puke up Nutro Ultra... No one sells Canidae within a million mile radius. I tried looking for that before the RC. The couple of stores listed in Canidae's website are closed down. I have plenty of time at work to look up ingredients, but right now Petsmart is my only store option. I'll just keep in mind that brands with more protein ingredients listed first are probably better. Any suggestions are super appreciated  |
Here are the brands that Petsmart lists on their website: Active Care, Alpo, Authority, Avoderm Natural, Beneful, Bil-Jac, Blue Buffalo, By Nature, Cesar, Eukanuba, Iams, Just Born, Mixables, Nature's Best, Nature's Recipe, Nutro Max, Nutro Natural Choice, Nutro Ultra, Pedigree, Pet, Ag, Pet Botanics, Pro Plan, Pro Plan Selects, Purina, Purina ONE, Royal Canin, Science Diet, The Good Life, Vita Gravy, Wholemeals ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Here are the Petco Brands: AKC, AvoDerm, Beneful, Bil-Jac, Blue Buffalo, Breeder's Choice, Castor & Pollux, Cesar, Cesar Millan, Diamond, Dog Whisperer, Eagle Pack, Eukanuba, Halo, Hill's Science Diet, Iams, Kibbles 'n Bits, Little Champions, MAX, Mixables, Natural Balance, Natural Choice, Nature's Best, Nature's Recipe, Nutro, ONE, Organix, Pedigree, Pet Promise, Pinnacle, Pro Plan, Purina, Royal Canin, Selects, Solid Gold, The Goodlife Recipe, Ultra, Ultramix, Wellness, WholeMeals, Less Options |
Have you tried Eagle Pack, Natural Balance, Solid Gold? Those are about the best from those lists. I'm not sure if it is the corn in the RC because Ellie used to eat SD also and wasn't allergic. Now I don't know if she has an acquired hypersensitivity to corn from eating the RC or if it is one of the other ingredients. Anyway, please go here and report your problem with Nutro: Consumer complaints about Nutro Pet Foods It is thought that dogs are getting very sick and even dying from this food and the company won't recall it. |
I always order from Petfooddirect.com I ordered a small bag of several different foods and gradually changed over to one. It wasn't long until I saw what she liked. I will probably get something different to mix in before long, but she really, really likes the Natural Balance Ultra Premium small bites. They all like something different though. Good luck! Oh! Stay away from the Nutro. I would be scared do death of it. There have been dogs that have really been sick or died. |
Yeah, Nutro was recommended to me when I first got Chewie by a Petsmart worker. It wasnt a week before he just would just randomly puke up that stuff. He wan't on it for very long...it was a several months ago. I heard about the Nutro issue back then so I completely stay away from it. The products I listed are the only ones we've tried. Nutro, Blue Buffalo, Hills Sd and RC. He loves RC to death but I dont want it to make him sicker... I'll check out the pet food direct website for the future...thanks for the info on that :) Looks like I'll make the hike to Petco because they have Wellness, Eagle Pack, Solid Gold and Natural Balance. Would you recommend any of those 4 or anyone in particular over the other? I know they're all 4 mentioned on the Premium list...but there's always the best of the best :p |
First 2 Ingredients of: Wellness: Canola Oil (preserved with mixed tocopherols, a natural source of Vitamin E), Ground Brown Rice, Tomato Pomace Solid Gold Hundchen Flocken Puppy Food: Lamb, Lamb Meal, Millet Eagle Pack: Chicken meal, Ground Yellow Corn, Rice Flour Natural Balance Small Bites: Chicken, Brown Rice, Lamb Meal I don't understand what makes all these foods "premium"... Doesn't look much different than everything else. |
Hi! If you can't find a high quality food in your area I would recommend trying Life's Abundance. Its shipped right to your door! I use this, recommend it, and sell it :) We LOVE it and all my babies go CRAZY for it and it is so good for them  I have a boy with alergies and he has not been itching since!!!! Here is the link if you'd like to try it HealthyPetNet Premium Natural Healthy Dog Foods Shipping isn't bad either $7.50 for any size bag, no matter what state your in! We love it and I plan to stay on it thier life time. |
Out of those brands, I have used Wellness Superfive Chicken Mix, which I really LOVED the ingredients of, but Ranger started to dislike it and would just pick. I had used Solid Gold Just a Wee Bit before, and recently switched him back to it and he LOVES it!! It has Bison and Salmon, has small kibbles, and is kinda smelly but I think that's why he loves it so freakin' much! I think that is my winner for now..... Oh, and you can feed the Just a Wee Bit to puppies, it has enough nutrician for small dogs as adults and puppies as it has a higher protein. Just a thought.. |
The first three ingrediants of Wellness are actually Deboned Turkey, Chicken Meal, Salmon Meal, Our dogs are on Wellness are love and are doing great, Buddy's coat has improved dramatically. My only other choice would be be Life's Abundance, which you can guarnatee the freshness of and they are not mass marketed so they will be able to easily watch quality control. |

I ended up getting the Wellness brand for puppies on my lunch break. I'll have Chewie give it a try tonight. Yeah, those ingredients I listed are from the Petco website and I guess they aren't accurate because my bag says the same things as yours. Lets all home the itchies go away and he loves this food for a long time. |
Make sure you give it at least a week, his skin is probably still irritated from all the itching, and will need a while to settledown. A bath with some soothing shampoo (oatmeal shampoo) might help also. |
Also, the only similar ingredients between Wellness and RC are Barley, Salmon Meal, Brown rice and Rice Bran...so hopefully the ingredient he's allergic to has been eliminated. |

I didn't realize Eagle Pack had questionable ingredients when I answered before, so I'm unrecommending it.:) |
One more suggestion for you... My Alyssa has severe allergies to corn and wheat. We were on Royal Canin for Yorkies then switched to Canidae and finally to Life's Abundance. I love Canidae and Life's Abundance. We have used Life's Abundance for about a year and are quite pleased with it. All of Alyssa's itching and scratching have stopped. You will also need to watch the ingredients in your treats. Eliminate all corn and wheat in them. Your will be shocked at how many treats have corn, wheat. or animal by-products in them. Also, my Alyssa had itching issues due to Frontline Plus. We have switched to Comfortis and are leading a non scratching life. It is wonderful! Life's Abundance food is available on an automatic ship. We get a bag each month which is what my 3 girls use. They are maintaining a healthy weight also on Life's Abundance. I plan to use it for the rest of their lives. For treats I buy Yorkie Yummies or pick up a bag of Chicken and Lamb jerky at Petco. It is grain free, contains no meat by-products, or artificial colors, flavors or preservatives. My girls love them. These treats are by Wellness. |

I think Eagle Pack changed their formula, I don't recall it containing corn last year when I was doing all of my research. |
Our Yorkie was on Nutro when we adopted her, she did ok with it but I was concerned about the recall it had in the past. I now have her on Eukanuba Yorkshire and she is doing great with it. |
