Every dog is so different. Sammy is skinny and 6 lbs and Loki is solid but not fat at 12 lbs, and they eat almost the same amount. 1/4 cup sounds right for Sammy. Loki gets a bit more. You truly have to feel her and look at her to tell if she is over or underweight. Don't base it on if she's hungry, because Loki would weigh 25 pounds if I let HIM decide how much to eat. You can also switch foods to something better. Try to find a small, independent pet store (none of the chains) and talk to them about good foods. Maybe narrow it down to a few that are available in your area and then I'm sure everyone here would be willing to give you their opinions :D Here's some good foods you can start looking for: Merrick, Natura (California Natural, Innova), Nature's Variety, Candiae, Taste of the Wild, Artemis... There are so many more but that will get you started! |
I feel so bad that she seems hungry all day. I feel like a bad mommy or something. I have two independent pet stores close by. I think I'll try Candiae and see if she will be more satisfied on that one. A lot of people for YT have recommended it. She is very hyper so she may metabolize faster than a more docile dog. I have been walking her a lot. It's good for both of us. She did lose the extra lb. I am happy with her weight. I want to keep her fit now rather than have to get many pounds off later. She's great now. My goal now is to find a food that will satisfy her and then all things will be right in her Yorkie World. Thanks so much for your suggestions. ;) |

My hungry one is my lazy one... so don't read too much into it. She may just really like food! You can motivate her with tiny treats to train her or you can try a puzzle toy that you put her kibble in and it takes her a while to get it out. If she is eating too quickly, she is probably not digesting. We are going to try 3 meals a day instead of two and see if that stops the "FEED ME NOW" pawing at the food bowl at 4:00 every day. Good luck! |
My dog is hungry ALL the time Yorkiedaze I really haven't considered home cooking. I'd be a little nervous wondering is she would be receiving all the nutrients she should be getting. I picked up a bag of Canidae today. I'll give that a try for now. Thanks. C C Kent Thanks so much for the welcome. I am making so many mistakes on this website it's not even funny. I've never done a chat before. I guess it's pretty obvious. You are correct about members being well versed in proper nutritrion. I have had some really great help. My dog is very hyper. Maybe she burns off her what she eats very fast. Someone else suggested that. You sound like you have happy dogs. Thanks for your input. |
My dog is hungry ALL the time mscat I hadn't even thought about the scenario of her burning off calories from just playing until you mentioned it. She is very hyper and plays a lot. We also take long walks almost every day. She seems to be fine other than she is hungry all the time. She has been putting on weight. Every time I take her to get weighed she is a little heavier. Yesterday I took her, and she lost almost 1 pound. I am very happy with that weight. We have been really trying and it paid off. I did pick up a bag of Canidae today. I gave her a few of them and of course she chomped them right down. I will gradually start to introduce this new food. I'm sure she will love it. :animal36 And I think you may be correct, she may just love to eat. I don't think she has parasites, but I'll keep that in mind. Thanks so much for your ideas. :) P.S. I loved your quote. |
