she has areas of shorter hair where she has broke it off. its not falling out at the follical like i have read most do...Im definately going to keep this in my head tho. She is due for heartworm soon and i may justtreat her with revolution which treats the mites anyway. just encase. unless of course this is all gone by then ...I pray it is. |
Hi diggy4, I have the exact same problem with my Trixie... We started off slightly itchy and they gave her meds and shampoo. During a follow up visit she received her Rabie booster and then we went down hill from there. Clearly what ever is going on with her got worse when her immune system went down from the rabie shot. Then she would itch just like you say your dog is doing. We also went the mite root.(although we never got a positive result). We changed her to hills prescription for 4 months nothing. She is now on wellness duck I don't think it's food however the hills was chicken flavor so I could possibly be fighting the whole chicken thing. Trixie gets very itchy after her baths no matter what shampoo I have tried. We have tried almost every thing that has been suggested for relief but nothing really did. Just when I think Yeah it's working it isn't and she goes back into the fits you describe. It is horrible and I feel your pain. I have been going through this since March and did see some signs in October(and a little through the winter) but not to this degree. Trixie has lost a lot of hair on her legs and the sides of her body. It started like broken hair but when she can bite or scratch it with the hair being so short( nothing to cushion it) she went bald and raw. I put a shirt on her to help protect her skin and it has helped her from getting ant secondary infections so far. We are on our third vet and I continue to search for answers. I find little red pimple like bumps on her skin when she has a flare up IDK if thats what you are calling hives. The only thing I would like to try is Raw or home cooking but unfortunately I just haven't had the time for that. Things are hectic here right now. It could be enviormental? Process of elimination is a slow thing. I have not had Trixie tested for allergies for a couple of reasons. Mainly because I heard they weren't that accurate and the other is I wanted to take a break from the vets. I spent so much and can't afford their guess work. However I ordered a cream from the UK and It's guaranteed to work or your money back. It's all natural and it's for skin issues due to allergies. We are on our third day today I will keep you informed of our progress. She seems to be so much happier since we started and her hair has started to grow already in the two days... I know I still have to find the cause but if she can be comfortable during the process then thats all I can ask for.. I spend my days dedicated to helping her and I watch her closely.. Good luck to you and feel free to PM me if you need to chat about it. |
Wow, I am so sorry to read this about Bella :( I hope she gets better very soon. Just speaking from experience, I would make sure that the water is not too warm, just barely lukewarm. When their skin is irritated, warm water can make it worse. When Miko had his allergic reaction, I did not bathe him in warm water because when I did, it irritated him. The pink became pinker. Barely lukewarm water is more soothing than warm water. |

So sorry Bella is so uncomfortable and that you are at your wits end. I know it's terrible when we can't fix something and make everything okay for the babies! I hate that helpless feeling! ...but you are being SUPER proactive, really thinking this out and partnering with your vet, so I'm sure a solution is in sight. I just had one thought about mites. Demodex only takes advantage of a dog when it's immune system is compromised. Demodex can be present on a healthy dog but never rear it's ugly head because it can't take hold. So, it's still possible for Bella to have demodex and for Diggy to be totally unaffected. The only way you'll know for sure is with the skin scraping. (I have French Bulldogs and while I've been lucky not to have demodex, I know a lot of Frenchie people who have...or who take in rescue w/ demodex and the resident dogs remain healthy) I've also heard of dogs developing a sudden allergy to a single protein. Before you try Hills as a last resort, look into some of the grain/gluten free kibbles that are fish/sweet potato....some are duck/sweet potato but I don't know if duck is too close to chicken. Instinct Chicken Meal was too rich for my crew. We're doing okay with Wellness Core, but that HAS Chicken. My Frenchie is allergic to grains. She will scratch until you can see her skin thru her fur, this also includes ear itchies and bum itchies. Her morning meal is The Honest Kitchen Force which is grain/gluten free and for sensitive tummy dogs but again, it has Chicken. The only recipe that doesn't use chicken or turkey is Verve. Verve uses beef, but it contains grains. They do make a recipe called PREFERENCE (here's the link/address...I'm not good with posting links) Grain Free Dog Food, Homemade Dog Food – The Honest Kitchen Preference is grain free and contains no meat, so you can add your own protein source. It's a dehydrated raw that you reconstitute with hot water. I just wanted to throw that out in case you need to take her diet back to ground zero and figure out an acceptable protein source. I'm not done reading the thread...hopefully, when I get to the end, you've found some answers! We're pulling for you and Bella! |
Update on Bella Paula is at the Vet again with Bella. She has hives all over and was vomitting. Please send positive thoughts and prayers their way. Can't seem to get this baby girl completely hive free. It's been very frustrating for Paula, she's doing everything she knows to do to help Bella and she still has the hives. Hopefully they will get Bella straightened out soon, and she can get back to her sweet, playful self. It's so hard on Paula to see her not feeling well. |
Definitely sending prayers their way!:hands: I've been trying to keep up with her thread about Bella. I pray they can find the true cause of what is going on! Poor Baby!!:aimeeyork:hug: |
Prayers being sent to Bella...I just read this whole thread and that poor little girl...and I am sure Paula is beside herself... |

Our thoughts and prayers are there too:) I just can't imagine what could be happening.. Hang in there I know it's tough.. |
Poor Baby I have been reading about your Baby. Sounds just awful for both of you. I don't know the answer for you, but I would make another visit to the Vet and ask about the scrapping. Don't you think the 2 vets would have suggested that? I watch so many animal shows, and all the experts are always talking about us feeding our Pooches human food. We don't realize what we do to them. Believe me, I am as much too blame. My Yorkies favorite food is Mcdonalds French Fries. How bad is that??? But how can you say no to a Yorkie? So I hope you find the answer for your Baby, real soon. Good Luck and keep us posted. |
Checking in to see if any updates on Bella? Good wishes being sent! |
Poor baby:(:(:( Since she isn\'t getting much relief and this has been going on for awhile, I think I would ask for a referral to an animal dermatologist. |
