what to expect after just being neutered? My yorkie Tanner was neutered today and I was wondering what is normal after surgery...He is shaky at times and his breathing seem rapid also and extremely groggy! he just turned one and he is not little he is almost 6 lbs. |
He will be groggy for most of the day. be glad he is groggy.. I know when mine started coming out of it, they were hurting. Sunnie is a tough little guy and he cried out everytime he tried to move the first night. I had to put both him and Beamer (who was nuetered at the same time) in an x-pen to keep them from trying to move around much and to keep the other dogs from disturbing them. Hopefully your vet has/will give you some pain meds for him. Mine only needed them for about 1 1/2 days. |
He was given No medication |
You need to call your vet and get pain meds |
This is my personal opinion, |
My vet agrees with giving no medication. She feels a dog is less likely to try to overdo things or be too active if he is able to feel the pain-means less chance of stitches letting go. Ziggy was neutered this time last year and was very groggy when we picked him up. He was a very good boy and asked to go pee as soon as we got home and peed the most he's ever. I'm pretty sure they did not take him out to pee all day at the vet's. He slept all night and most of the next day, showed interest in his food by the second day and was almost back to normal by day three. I was horrified by his operation site as the whole area looked like a huge purple plum. I couldn't imagine it ever getting better but gradually over three weeks the swelling went down and today he has a very faint scar. Don't be too surprised about swelling. I must say I don't regret having it done-he has completely stopped humping all his toys but has retained his mischievous attitude-I was really worried his personality would change and it didn't. Good luck with your little man! |
When we had our Maltese neutered, he acted like nothing ever happened to him. He was raring to go right away. When we had Logan (our 3 pound, 11-month old Yorkie) neutered last month, he actually whined the rest of the day and the next. He was miserable and slept quite a bit. |
I had my 2 pound Yorkie neutered and they gave him pain meds to bring home, probably because of his size (and he had teeth extracted). He was groggy as you described and acted off for the first day. HE SLEPT A LOT. I just held him on my lap (for hours) and let him sleep while I watched tv. |
My vet is not a big believer in pain meds either , most dog will not even act like anything happed 4to6 hours after a neuter but if they are showing signs of pain labored breathing and shaking a vet should be contacted. |

How is Tanner doing today? |
I hope he is doing much better. TJ was just neutered and had 2 teeth pulled on the 7th. He stayed right beside me and slept. If he wiggled, I took him outside to pee. He was groggy all day. He did not eat but he did drink a little. The next day was a little better. He did eat a little meat but he still wanted to be right with me and he slept on and off most of the day. On day three he was back to almost normal. Was I worried and second guessing my decision the first day.. You Bet! Am I glad I had it done? Yes. He will be better off for it. Good luck with your baby.. and give him lots of gentle hugs. |
Thank you guys for the responses in this thread. My Diddy will be neutered in the next month so I will be on the look out for what to expect. |
Hot Rod was groggy and sleepy for about 2 1/2 days. I was given no pain meds and wished that I'd gotten some. He had 14 teeth taken out at the same time. He did eat and drink the same night. In about 3 days he was almost back to normal, at 4 and 5 days he was running around and trying to jump on the couch. I don't remember any labored breathing though. |
i cant believe this whole no pain meds thing!! my moms dog just got neutered and he was on pain meds & anti-inflammatories for 5 days! I think his personality has completely changed :( |
Thanks for this thread.. I'm taking Toby in soon to get neutered and teeth extracted as well. We are lucky that he will be getting laser surgery so there will be no wounds/stitches.. Apparently the vet has told me it's not too much more expensive than the regular surgery procedure, cause I had figured it would have been way more money to do it that way... thanks again.. hope all of you are having a great summer! xoxMolly&Tobyxox |
Hi I hope you don't mind being asked how much is the laser surgery. I was given a price of $400 for my Diddy to be neutered. I will have to find out if they do the laser surgery here in Ontario at my vet. |
Has anyone else have the laser neutering done. How does this work. |

I'll try to call soon and let you know.. I think that the laser surgery is about the same except they seal the skin with the laser, therefore no stitches & wounds afterwards... I'm sure he may be in a bit of pain still though... I'll keep you posted on what I can find out. Thanks! |
Im glad someone started thi thread. Jenny and Jake are getting fixed on Friday. I'm not too worried about Jake, he's two and 5lbs. Jenny on the other hand is a petite 7 month old. 2.5lbs. The vet is very trusted, we came to her last year during our vacation in Kiev, and she pulled Jake's teeth with ease. Jake forgot about the ordeal the next day. The vet said for Jenny it will be more work because she will have more stitches, therefore on pain meds, and anti-biotics. She will ahve her teeth pulled under the same anestesia. She said it's a total of 10 days recovery? I thought it was a little long. and 5 days on the anti-biotics. Im just very nervous about this whole surgery thing, but I know it's for the best... Im so worried.. |
what to expect after just being neutered? Tanner's update Tanner is slowly improving! breathing seem fine now and the shaking as stopped. It took a lot of coaxing to get him to eat a nibble this morning and even more coaxing to get him to drink!! Tanner been lying down all day and whined every so often.. this morning he licked my hand and his tongue felt so dry and I could feel the heat so that when i started coaxing him to drink (definitely was dehydrated this morning). Hopefully he will get back to normal very soon and be his hyper little self again. |
See if you can get him to lick an ice cube or a damp face cloth if he doesn't want to drink, especially if you guys in Nfld are going through the same hot muggy weather as NS. I would say it is more important for him to drink than to eat. |

wow $55.00 is a good price! I paid $165.25 and they wanted me to pay $55.00 additional dollars for a routine bloodwork! but I declined. I think neutering and spaying should be more affordable! |

Oh my that is expensive... |
Very Lethargic Johnny was very lethargic after his neutering. He slept all day and wasn't very hungry either. He ate some oatmeal. I didn't want to give too much because I was afraid he'd throw up. I slept on the floor with him that night and he was back to normal by the next day. He wasn't supposed to jump or do steps for several days either. :aimeeyork |
yeah thats why were doing BOTH dogs here in Kiev, and it will cost us less then 500$ all together for fixing them, the anestesia, meds, and Jennys dental work. The US made a business out of vet medicine..and to find at least good quality care is harder than running a marathon. |
I'm taking Duke to get his pre-op exam tomorrow. I was told that they don't do the blood test before the exam but I can ask for one to be done. Also, they said he doesn't need one because he is still young, 9 months. So if I wanted one what kind of blood test should I ask for? |
