Im glad I found this post. We fed Jake boiled chicken, and carrots, farmers cheese, PB, and sometimes liver. He WILL NOT eat any dry food. crappy canned food he likes like I love junk food :) Like owner like dog lol But he eats. Jenny on the other hand is the pickiest eater I have ever met. She eats food that is new to her, and is super tasty and soft. ugh. She ate what Jake did great for the first few times, and then she only eats it when she's very hungry, HAND fed... I had no choice but to give her some yucky pedigree wet food, She needs to eat. What wet food is good for her? Does wellness have a wet food, and where can I get it?

I was starting to get confused. I hear people talking about how good one brand of food is and others saying not to feed it. I JUST decided that i am just going to find something Buno likes even if ppl on here think it's a "bad food". I grew up with dogs and they all ate Purina and were all healthy and happy dogs. including one that lived to be 18. How bad could it possibly be??

Yeah, i know. it has weir body parts from diff. animals and whatnot. I read where somone said they wont give their baby anything they wouldnt put in their own mouth. So are you eating her dogfood she eats now? i dont think so. im not tryingto make anyone mad, im just irratated with the million dog food treads acting like only expensive food id worth feeding.

I just got a catalog that sells Wellness, Only Natural Pet Store - Dogs Cats Holistic Supplies Products Food Treats Vitamins Medicine Supplements
I am going to order some for Tricksie, it does come in small cans, which I have a hard time finding. I mix Innova EVO with wet so she only eats 1/4 to 1/2 cup a day.

I can't say which is best, but I am happy with IAMS. I also mix the wet with dry one a week as a treat. Leo is happy and so is his family. :D

i know no one wants to know that what they are doing for heir pups isn't the best.. but your vet is only recommending Iams because he/she gets paid to. Just read the ingredients.

Don't order from this site I sent you, their shipping is too much, gas will not cost me $10 to pick up 4, 6 oz. cans.

It is entirely up to you what you feed your dogs, the question was are all dog foods bad? No, but some have higher quality ingredients which include natural, organic, and human grade. If you want to feed your dog store brand: Iams, Purina, Beneful, Pedigree, whatever go on ahead. You get what you pay for and it doesn't cost them nearly anything to produce that crap for your dogs, they are practically giving it away with such low quality ingredients. And to respond to your comment about if we would eat our dogs food, Yes, I have tried it myself, Is it part of my everyday meal, no, but I wouldn't feed my worst enemy the other stuff let alone my furkid. There is a difference between not being able to afford it because you are strapped on a budget and just being cheap, I am sure most people would want to buy the high quality food if they could, If you can't well then you do what you can and what is in your own means. A pets nutrition is up to you, they can't tell you what to feed them or what is harmful to them, it is up to you as a pet parent to research for yourself and find what is best for them. 50% of dogs and cats die each year from cancer, Cancer is the number one killer in our pets each year, come to find out most commercial store brand foods contain ingredients known to be Carcinogenic: Causing cancer or contributing to the causation of cancer. By the way most people say their pets died of old age and in the old days were fed store brand, how many people actually took their furkid to find out what the cause of death was in those days.

I just wonder where all of this is coming from all of a sudden. I'm sorry you are all frustrated.
Nobody on YT goes around saying that you HAVE to homecook that I know of.
Several of us think it is best and it is the only acceptable way to feed for us but what you do is your business, not anyone elses.

Personally, after hours and hours of research and frustration toward the dog food companies that supposedly have high quality food, I just decided that even Ellie's treats would be homemade from now on. The only things (besides medicines) that goes into her system that aren't necessarily fit for human consumption are her vitamins and that might even change soon.

Dogs can live long and happy lives on Purina but I don't want Ellie eating that.
I want what is best for her (as do the rest of you for your Yorkies) and what I think is best is homecooked. Other people might see it differently and that's okay.:) If I had a large dog, I might have to settle for kibble. Which kind? I don't know. And I might not even think it was a big deal to feed kibble if there weren't more illnesses and deaths reported from dog food that was never recalled. There is no way to know if all of these people are tellling the truth but I have to trust them until they are proven wrong. Any food could be recalled but lately there are sooo many reports of problems with dog food (maybe it was always there and I just didn't see it). On top of that most foods use ingredients that are just gross and quality control measures seem almost nonexistent. I mean, now we are being warned to wash our hands after touching kibble because of salmonella concerns. If I didn't care if Ellie's system had to process that, I might as well feed her raw.

High quality dog foods are not necessarily more expensive...That's a huge misconception. Canidae, Wellness, Solid Gold, etc. are all very affordable.

If I were to feed dog food, I would give a food that does not contain by-products or BHA/BHT/ethoxyquin which are preservatives that are carcinogens...This is in many foods and is allowed up to a certain amount in dog foods.

I agree with Ellie may...Homecookers feel that homecooking is best. Raw feeders feel that raw feeding is best, etc. You should feel what you feel comfortable with.

I also homecook, but that's because homecooking is what I feel most comfortable with for my dogs.

But to say that high quality foods is too expensive is not necessarily the case. It depends on the food, but a $10 bag of high quality food will last a month or more. That does not cost too much for better quality food.

marcerella02 07-15-2008 11:17 AM

just wanted to comment on the misconception of home cooking taking "tons of time and money" it is neither. I just cooked for at least a month for Layla in about an hour... instead of having a nap.. i cooked... most times.. instead of watching tv... i cook... and then i freeze it and we are good to go... if we are having bbq whatever... i put salmon on for Layla... homecooking costs less (In my expereince) than kibble. We eat veggies, and the leftovers (raw or slightly cooked) are for Layla... we eat yogurt, cottae cheese and fruit.. and so does she... the first time might be overwhelming and stressful but it only gets easier.

While I have been letting things slide lately, for ahile I was feeding Ellie only organic grains and she got organic chicken. The ingredients in our are horrible...I agree, but most of them are still more acceptable than what is in dog food. For example, human food rarely contains ethoxyquin and cheap dog food does. Also, we can buy whole chickens, turkeys..., whereas some dog food companies use the parts that humans wouldn't even think of eating for the most part.

I don't want to mention any brands, but one of the most popular frozen pizza brands contains BHA and BHT...Not good...Same thing with processed meats like ham, salami, hot dogs, etc. They contain sodium nitrite which is a preservative that is considered a carcinogen as well.

I do eat some of that stuff but it is definately limited here.:)
Well, okay. I would like to limit it but that doesn't always work. ;)

Haha :) I know it's hard to stop eating those things.

Actually, if you please re-read I stated my vet said it was a better dry food on the market. He recommends Royal Canine. I would look at alternatives, however, I didn't know there were so many options. That is one reason why I joined this site. I want to learn through what others have to offer. I am not trying to be rude or ignorant just becoming educated to a new yorkie world.
