Recommended protein and fat % in dog food? Does anyone know what these % range should be to be considered quality foods that would not harm our little ones? |

Oh ok...I see. Zoe is currently eating Artemis and Innova EVo and the ratios are as follows: Innova EVO (grain free small bites red meats) Protein 42.42 % Fat 22.22 Artemis: Crude Protein, min. 25.0% Crude Fat, min. 15.0% Based on your understanding of ratios, what do you think? |

sorry didn't realzied you were feeding both.. iw ould continue to do that... the artemis has really low fat which is great balanced with the EVO. Has she been tested for liver issues/ If all came back ok i'd keep doing what you are doing :) |
me again :p lately i have been leery about food companies that don't offer a grain free variety. I feel like they aren't current and up to date on the digestive needs of dogs.. but that's just me :p |
Thank you....yes, she has been tested and no liver problem, just lots of allergies which is why I was specifically looking for grain free...her vet shakes his head every time he sees 'barley' as a food ingredient in MOST food brands becuase he thinks that ingredient is not beneficial and doesn't understand why all food companies add this as it is a highly allergic grain. Yes, we alternate her on Artemis at night and EVO during the day. I was thinking of rotating the EVo with the chicken variety as well as EVO reduced fat, which unfortunately has the chicken that Layla is allergic to. The fat content is also 15%. Thanks again for putting the protein/fat content into perspecitive. I love the EVO that it has a lot of GREAT ingredients and no 'fluff' that isn't necessary in a diet. You should get samples first though, Zoe likes the EVO chicken a lot more than the red meats, not sure why. She will eat the red meat, but not as quickly as the chicken variety. But this grain free EVO variety is new and seems promising. |

The problem with Evo is their canned. It is over 35% fat which is crazy. That is just too high. |

Even the chicken (actually turkey is the first ingredient) variety of the EVO has about 22% fat. I have a 13 yr old lab, a 4 yr old shih tzu, and a 3 yr old yorkie eating this. Everyone is doing really well, but I think it's making Lucy (my yorkie) fat. It seems the less I feed her and the more we excercise the fatter she gets. I've also noticed that she's pretty itchy. I'm going to try wellness fish and rice and see how that goes. I need her to lose around a half pound. |
Huh? I'm seeing their canned beef at 11% fat and the chicken/turkey at 11.35% fat? I don't see the 35%? |

Crystal where do you see the 35%? |

Here is the guaranteed analysis of the Evo Chicken canned: Crude Protein (min) 9 % Crude Fat (min) 10 % Crude Fiber (max) 1 % Moisture (max) 78 % Carbohydrates NFE (max) 0.46 % Vitamin E (min) 100 IU/kg Calorie Content: 1,349.8 kcal/kg 38 kcal/oz The moisture is 78%, so the recipracol of the moisture is 22. The fat divided by the recipracol of the moisture (10 divided by 22) equals .45. Move the decimal point two places to the right and you have 45% fat. You can do this for kibble also but the results aren't much different from what is on the bag. |

I have learned so much from her.:) and google and I have a textbook on animal nutrition that is over 1000 pages long. |
Wow Crystal, that is fascinating. So isn't what is on the label misconstrued/false advertising then? I mean some dogs, like little dogs can possibly get really sick if an owner isn't aware that water is factored into the % |

Science Diet converts their foods for you on their site. I know, not the best food but it is a nice thing to do.:) This is why when feeding canned you have to feed so much more volume. Moisture isn't calories, vitamins or minerals, so it can't be counted. I do think they should put both versions on the cans though, because you are correct, a small dog who can't handle fat well would be in trouble if the owner didn't know how to calculate dry matter. |
Hi! Please correct me if I am wrong, but I thought that toy dogs were not supposed to have a high protein dog food because it is too much strain on their kidneys. On dog food analaysis, the top of the line dog food, it says it should only be given to large dogs because of the high protien content. Someone help! Thanks  Cindy |

One side says dogs are carnivores and no amount of protein will hurt them as long as there isn't underlying liver or kidney disease. The other side says too much protein causes kidney problems. There really aren't any studies showing that high protein causes kidney problems (so far) but the general consensus is to reduce protein if a kidney problem is diagnosed because it may make the problem worse. I am somewhere in the middle. If someone could show me a study from a major university stating that dogs live longer on high protein, I might go along with saying that is best. But, I don't really see these studies. I think if you feed high protein or mdoerate protein, you are taking a chance either way because I personally see some lack of science on both sides (solid answers). It is probably out there somewhere, but who wants to flip through textbooks all day and find the answers? So it is really owner preference.:) |
Thanks for the insight on this from all of you!:) It can be so confusing! We want to do the Best for our Babies. |
Howdy, y'all! This is fascinating info. I just started Cujo on the canned EVO (weaned him off the vet recommended Science Diet) and he just loves it. However, he is a little overweight (9.4) so I'm not sure I'm doing him any favors now that I see how to analyze the analysis on the can! His skin & hair have really improved, tho?? What to do. He only gets about 2 Tbs as I split the can between 4 dogs. He also has kibble available at all times & seems to prefer it. I've been trying different kinds but he is finicky & he likes the Science Diet!!! What to do? I've cut back on his evening "cookies". Oh, by the way, he will be 9 yrs old in Dec. I'm in love with this little guy and only want the best for him at any cost. Any recommendations? |
Where can i buy these foods? After reading the posts...Science Diet is DEAD to me! |
