Rescue Remedy- hurray! I am so happy! It's a miracle! I learned of this product right here at YT so to those of you who recommended it- Thank you! To those who don't know about it yet, if you have a dog who gets anxious or has any fears, this might be what you're looking for. My daughter's dog Spike is a really sweet, loving and super happy dog. He's always everyone's favorite out of our three. He just has a neat personality, however he has some pretty big phobias. Specifically car rides and rain, no thunder required but of course that does make it worse. We live in Florida and can expect at least a bit of rain every day in the summer so it's a pretty big fear to have. Sooo, guess how he reacts to fire works. It is completely awful. Spike expresses his fears by panting manically and shaking violently and basically looking terrified. We first tried Benedryl for a car trip. It had the opposite effect and he freaked out for the whole trip. Next we tried an herbal supplement (valerian based) called Comfort Time. It helped just a tiny bit. He didn't shake quite as bad but still panted. It seems to calm him physically but not mentally. Next the vet prescribed Valium. Just like the Benedryl it had the opposite effect and was like giving him speed and at the same time taking away all of his coordination. He spent over an hour locked in his stroller because he was seriously going to hurt himself. Overall it was a really long and scarey 5 or 6 hours. The vet said if the Valium didn't do the trick, he could prescribe something else but usually it was a last resort because it is so strong and it drugs the dogs so much, that it is a little scarey to the owners. Ummm, yeah, we wont be giving that one a try. So we have been using the Comfort Time even though it provides minimal results. As the 4th was approaching I was getting really worried and started searching around on YT knowing I had read of another product. I had and I found it- Rescue Remedy! It is another herbal supplement, this one being flower based. It comes in liquid form and Spike thought it was pretty tasty and licked it right out of my daughter's hand. You can also shoot it directly into their mouth or put it in water of food. It worked!:cheer: We gave it to him early in the day to be sure of his reaction before the fireworks. Of course we had our daily dose of rain and no shaking and no panting. Miracle! We gave him a bit more at night before the fire works. By 9:30 when the fireworks were at their peak and shooting off all around us nonstop he did start shaking but by that time even Sugar was shaking a little. So I think we have finally found our solution. I bought ours at the Vitamin Shoppe. Spike is 4 1/2 pounds and we gave him 3 drops early in the day and 2 more last night. I'm going to check with our vet on Monday but from what I've read it will be safe enough to give him a few drops every day so he'll be all set when it rains. LOL, sorry for writing a book but I had to share our good news!:) |
The lady who helped me at Vitamin Shoppe uses it for her cats and always puts a dropper full in their water. From reading around on it it seems like a lot of people keep it in their dog or cat's water on a daily basis. We wont need to do that but it does seem like a very mild supplement that you don't have to worry about overdosing or any harmful effects or even being all that precise with dosage (agian I am going to check with my vet;)). |

I gave some to Max a couple of times and it made him hallucinate:(. I was SO disappointed. But I know it does work for some. I too, have tried almost everything (except Valium) b/c when we go on a car trip, it's a 10 hour drive and it's very disconcerting when Max was panting, shaking, and whining the entire time (along with having to be held UP....). The last thing I got which I haven't tried yet is Bonine....and it's been so long since I read about it I need to go find out how much I'm supposed to give b/c I've forgotten. |

Yes, Max actually hallucinated (I may have given him too much, but I wanted to try it out right after I bought it when we were out of town and before we were coming back home. I was using the little dropper and I think too much squirted into his mouth) I'm really glad I did, b/c his reaction would have been really horrible if we'd been driving. My dh would have been driving off the side of a cliff or something:rolleyes:~ he can't deal with any distraction in the car.... There's no hallucinogenic ingredients in Reglan either and he hallucinated on it. Different things affect different dogs (and people) differently. And herbs are drugs also; they're just natural:). I've heard a lot of other people say that it made their dog just like Spike....I just wish it had worked on Max in the car. I've also tried it on my dh (my girlfriend told me to put it on him behind his ears and maybe he'd calm down:))...I think he's just immune to anything peaceful:rolleyes:. |
Rescue Remedy is an all natural herb and I've never heard of any adverse reaction to it. YOur dog is a rare case indeed. Nikki, so glad you found just the right thing that worked. Most Vets. don't even know anything about Rescue Remedy since it's really for people. ;) |

ETA- my daughter gave Spike 2 drops earlier today in anticipation of rain. It (shockingly) never rained but people are shooting off leftover fireworks tonight and he is oblivious. I am in shock and thrilled! |
Thanks for posting this Nikki! I have a shihpoo that has decided to be scared of thunder and fireworks. He only started it at age 2. I was discussing this the other day in chat and no one had tried it, so I'm glad to hear it works so well for Spike.:D |
I have to say...I may have to give this a try. Winston is a total nutcase even before it actually storms...How does he know before we do? The fireworks were no fun at my house at all...poor little guy, I feel for him...if this stuff works, life will be so much simpler. How soon do you give it...like I said, Winston will wake us from a sound sleep, long before it starts raining/storming...and I really don't want to give it to him continuously. Thanks for the info...it is greatly appreciated!!! |
Thanks for this information, I've not needed to use anything in the past with Ruby or Reno. With fostering rescues though it could prove useful. I've got one little boy now that started out pacing anxiously. He is better now but something like Rescue Remedy could have made the transition easier for him. I like the fact that it is a natural supplement, that is safe to use. |
Are you all using the Rescue Remedy for Pets? or the one for people? I get the one for pets or kids because it doesn't have any alcohol in it. The one for people has 27% alcohol in it and maybe that is why Max had hallucinations, he was drunk!! Brooke is only 3.5 lbs so I didn't want to chance using the one with alcohol. Just more info if you need it. |

Thanks for this thread. My homeopathic vet suggested this for both me and my dog - and it has been in our house ever since. My Cavalier, Louis, LOVES it and when I take out the bottle he comes running and sits patiently, waiting for his dropper full of RR (perhaps my little man is an alcoholic?? ;) or he just enjoys the buzz..) Our Yorkie mix does NOT like it, so I give it to her by massaging it into her paws or the tips of her ears. its equally effective and if you are worried about your little one ingesting so much alcohol, you can use this method (or buy the pet formula!) For people, my vet suggested 10 drops in a cup of chamomile tea. Try it before bed tonight. Its amazingly relaxing. Just don't be surprised if your dog tries to drink your tea!! |

So, if I have the one with the alcohol in it, are you saying that the effect of the alcohol will be negated if I rub it on his paws? I think I"ll try some in my tea tonite and maybe just get the other formula for the dogs:) |

I would check with your vet. As I said, my 10 pound Cavalier loves the stuff and my Yorkie mix doesn't - so I follow their lead and give it to them based on their individual tastes. |
We have the human RR with alcohol. The Vitamin Shoppe does carry both but the sales lady said due to it being less diluted, most of the customer's prefer the human variety for their animals and it is what she uses for her cats. I don't know if that is true or not. I wasn't too concerned about the alcohol because we use PetzLife oral gel and it has an alcohol base which we haven't had any issues with. If anyone is concerned about the alcohol though, the animal variety is certainly your best option. We have a storm moving in now and Spike wasn't interested in the Rescue Remedy so I just put a few drops on a bite of bread and he ate it right up. |
Thanks for sharing the information about Rescue Remedy. I would like to try it on Piccolo before we travel, since it makes her so nervous to be in a car. Can you buy the one for pets, in a pet store? |

I am going to buy some now for Jewels she is very nervous dog and does the same thing as Spike. She even does it when my daughter has friends over to play. |
GNC usually carries the pet formula - Whole Foods definitely carries it. |
Thanks for putting the store locator on this thread. I will start searching! :) |
You can order it from Dr. Fosters and Smith. Rescue Remedy: Bach Flower Pet Stress Reliever |
:thumbup::thumbup: This is an awesome thread and exactly the answers I was looking for!!! Hi all - I tried a couple drops of the Rescue Remedy last night but since she'd had a full day of running and playing at daycare, I couldn't tell if it worked or if she was just generally pooped from a busy day. This morning it occured to me that Rescue Remedy is made from flowers...so I checked the toxic plant list and two of the ingredients in RR were on the list - Clematis and Star of Bethlehem. What do you guys think? Were everyone is so pleased with the results, should we worry about this? I want to continue to use this if it's okay!!! |
The tinctures used in Rescue Remedy have minute concentrations of the flower essences. Also - note that the Remedy is not meant to make the dog pass out - its not a sedative, what it does is relax the mind and body in a different way then a tranquelizer works, as you use it with your dog, you will see his or her individual reaction. Also, if you are curious, try it yourself. 10 drops in a cup of chamomile tea. Then you'll better understand the affect it has. :) |
