Donating YT 11K Club Member | ![]() Lately raccoons have been seen in my neighborhood, climbing on trees, and walking at night etc. I overheard a lady talking at the dog park about vaccines given to dogs because of raccoon urine, does anyone know about this or if it's necessary?

Donating YT 10K Club Member | ![]() I live on the water and have raccoons present. I have never heard of any vaccine. What issue is there with raccoon urine? Rabies isn't transmitted by urine. Actually there I doubt there is much raccoon urine...even in my yard.

| ![]() Raccoons can carry rabies..but I never heard of it transmitted by urine...a rabies shot would protect a dog at any rate...mouse/rat urine carries lepto..that's all I know... |

This is what I was thinking too. Perhaps call your vet. There might be an outbreak of Lepto in your area. Not sure if that's what Raccoons carry, but that is the only thing I know that is carried in urine?

| ![]() I'm thinking it is lepto as well since it is spread through urine. Definitely do your research on this vaccine as it is not normally recommended for yorkies. You need to weigh the actual risk of your dogs coming in contact with racoon urine and contracting the disease to the risks of the vaccine.

| ![]() I have also heard that little dogs can die after recieving the Lepto shot .Too much danger in that .Rabies is important , but Lepto, I would advise against it. ![]()

| ![]() we had a raccoon coming in our yard to eat berries off our tree. i was scared of his poop. i was scooping it up. i think they can also infest grassy areas with fleas.
