Fleas! Fleas! Help!!! We are being taking over by Fleas! I can't take it anymore. My little spike is just covered no matter what I do. I use to use the Frontline Plus. Switched over to K9 cause my friend said was good for the mosquito's. NOT! It doesnt last more than a couple days and they are back - all over. I have an older Lab outside that I treat as well. We have fleabombed the garage where shultz (lab) sleeps and have sprayed the yard- but yet my spike just rolled over on the deck and there where like 25 fleas just on his belly - WHAT THE HECK! Maybe the answer is going back to Frontline Plus. What do you use on your Yorkie??? I am so angry tho because I bought a 4m Supply for both dogs and the stuff is not even working grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr  Thanks for your help in advance! Angelia spike:aimeeyork and shultz:animal36 |
Give him a bath with dawn detergent (it kills the fleas) then put a flea preventative. If he has them that bad they are also in your carpet and you will need to flea bomb your house |
I live in NJ too and we had a bad flea problem last summer. I think they were coming from rabbits. We bombed the house ,sprayed the car and sprayed the lawn. Plus took measures to rid the yard of rabbits. I had the same problem w/k9 advantix not working. I called the 800# on the box and they sent me a free 6mo supply! I was so grateful that they understood and were so sensitive and helpful that I continue to use their product. So far this year we are flea free. Hang in there ..I know how awful fleas can be. |
so K9 is now working for you? I have gone through my 4m supply in 2m and have to go out and buy new now- grrrrrrrrrrrrr. This stuff is not cheap either. Thanks for your help! ;) |
We've been using Revolution and have not had problems. We also treat the lawn for ticks and fleas. |

Flea larvae (eggs) do NOT live on pets - they are deposited on them by adult fleas..... but fall off and thrive in carpet and dark places - they can stay in their STUPID cocoon type 'egg house' for a long time - :( I forgot the proper word LOL ....but I feel like an expert on them now since seeing my 1st flea in MY house a month ago. so you need to bomb and VACCUME everywhere until you get this problem solved and wash ALL bedding blankets and clothes in HOT water too - it's ALOT of work to get rid of these evil creatures. GOOD LUCK - fleas are the nastiest little bloodsucking creatures - I don't even know what purpose they have on this earth. Ticks either:( |

WOW ! Really apply on him wet. I always thought you where suppose to wait like 2 days before or after a bath to apply - so the stuff mixes with the oils from the dogs skin etc. Hmm - Maybe I will call them too! I never had this problem with frontline. I bought Spike Last year from a pet store (I know bad move). He was infested with fleas and had pneumonia. I nursed him back to health and used the frontline and he has been flea free ever since till now. But it has been real HOT here couple times maybe the fleas are just hatching all over. It is horrible I keep washing hmmm and they keep attacking him. poor guy scratches and scratches and whines at me to scratch his itches. He whines- I feel so bad.:( |

so if I were you - I'd do the house - the yard and find out all you can on getting rid of them - there's a ton of sites on the net Also - Get some CAPSTAR pills from your vet - they kill biting fleas right away - it's only a temp fix but it will make HIM feel better.....there's going to still be crawling fleas which would drive anyone nuts - so you really need to treat your home too |
CAPSTAR pills? Hmm never heard of them! Thanks I will try this. I am off to wash all the sheets and blankets cause he of course sleeps curled up right next to me! |

this site has info on it - How to Get Rid of Fleas - House and Pets ps - never use HARTZ products either - they're so toxic |
We swear by Revolution here... there are a ton of rabbitts...and other critters in our area and "knock on wood" we haven't had a problem. When you use bombs...make sure that anything the furbabies might play with is removed. You may have to get replace the toys if they can't be washed in super hot water. |
Revolution is what you treat your pets with or what your treat your yard with? We have loads of squirrels with the woods behind our house and some bunnies and chipmunks- so maybe that is where all the fleas are coming from. Don't ever remember it being this bad. I have had shultz (lab) for over 12 years and this is the worst ever. Poor dogs- I am starting to feel itchy all over just trying to treat them lol |
a vet can order advantage multi 10....in the states although it does not seem to be as popular.. I asked my vet in florida and she said yes she can get it.. it is not cheap.. I would never ever order online.. you might save money but it does not help when fleas are so terribly bad.. we use this and have no problems.. we had a friend with one yorkie in florida go through this.. and I sent her to the vet.. only then with what I told her to get did it help her.. use it every month.. bomb your house.. it might take a few times at this point.. I hate fleas so will do what I can to keep them off my dogs.. good luck and hope this helps...anne |
We had a terrible flea problem. I used the capstar. It worked great. Made my baby sweat. But most of the fleas died. Now I use an all natural flea shampoo that I got at the pet store that specializes in horses. It's called De-Flea pet shampoo. I think it works better than the advantage that I put on her every month! |
Just a thought - I live in South Florida - where fleas are rampant year round. I live in a pretty wooded area with lots of rabbits disseminating their fleas as well! We go to dog parks and beaches too. I have never had a flea infestation. I don't use any preventative other then some essential oils and tea tree oil in the dog's shampoo. Don't worry, we aren't the luckiest people in the world! I have found a few fleas here and there - I pop the dogs right into the bath tub and all the sheets into the washer and use a borax powder on all the carpets. B/C fleas are a parasite, they look for hosts that have run down immune systems. The best flea preventative is a holistic diet. I totally understand using chemical preventative, but I would also advise you to look into a raw diet for your pets. I just want to share what has worked for me and I hate the thought of your babies sufferring! One more thought - my vet reccomends sentinal plus for dogs with infestations because i think it kills biting fleas and stops the buggers from breeding. |
thanks to everyone- I have washed both dogs. Washed the blankets and the sheets in bleach and HOT water. got the stuff for the carpet- retreated the dogs. So I hope this works! |
You might want to order some critter oil - Critter Oil Flea Protection from The DogBar It really works and you can use as often as necessary. Remember when re-treating with chemical preventatives, that they are pesticides! Be careful and best of luck getting rid of your flea problem! |

I have washed her in Dawn, captured and killed all that I can find on her, yet she still scratches like crazy. Before I did that, I put on my bathing suit and we got in the tub so I could keep her body submerged for a bit thinking I could drown the little suckers. She thought I was trying to drown her, I think. Her little body is a mess! I just bough some frontline. I always put flea killer on her after a bath (but she was dry) and the girls at the vets office told me I am doing it wrong. They said three days BEFORE her bath and no bath for three days after application. They said it has something to do with the naturally occurring oils in their coat...I don't know or understand. But I followed their directions faithfully and STILL FLEAS!! Plus...the frontline made her sick for a day. Sad and laying around. No interest in anything. No barking at the doorbell....nothing! She was not her usual little self and I was soooo stressed about it! I am considering changing back to Advantage.......I think that worked better. But...I am afraid to put it on her now. I am thinking I need to wait until the proper amount of time has passed...I surely don't want to hurt her with this stuff. I am not thrilled to be putting pesticides on her in the first place. :( Do you think it would hurt her to go ahead and put on the Advantage? It has been a couple of weeks now. |
**update** ok- I was flea combing spike religiously yesterday had like 3 different sessions after the bath- getting 20-25 fleas every time! FREAKING ME OUT! We are doing better today only 3 fleas yeah! Maybe by tomorrow we can go FOR NONE! |
Rodents are a big carrier of fleas...rabbits, squirrels, rats, mice, etc. In the past, I used ant killing granules in the yard (got it from Lowes) and it protects against fleas/ticks. I sprayed the product in with water and used another spray to treat the trees. Tried Revolution, Frontline, Advantage and Advantix. NOTHING worked. I got the Frontline Plus and with the combo of treating the yard, we haven't had issues with fleas. Also, I heavily treated the fence line...if you are treating your yard but your neighbor isn't the fleas will come back. Good luck! |

Please tell me how you do that 'flea combing' because I really want to know how to find these darn things on my baby! I look and look and look and can never find more than one or two and she is always scratching!! |
I'm on a crusade against fleas myself! I talked to the vet and I've been all over the internet. When you apply any topical it cannot be right after a bath. The flea medicine distributes itself through oils on your pets skin and hair so if you've just bathed them then there may not be enough oil for the med to work well. In my area the fleas have built up a resistance to the Frontline products. Revolution has heartworm preventative in it and my vet says it works great. She also recommends Comfortis which is a pill. Capstar is a pill that kills all of the fleas on your pet but only lasts for about 24 hrs.. The same with Dawn dish soap. Dawn will kill fleas but if you have not treated your yard then you will have fleas again within 48 hrs. or so. At least that was my experience. My Ginger(she's my yorkie baby) may be pregnant so I'm trying not to use poisons on her but I'm going to use Comfortis on my other dogs and Advantage on the cat. I tried rubbing Ginger down with brewer's yeast but it didn't work so don't bother going there if you've heard of that. I bought diatomaceous earth to use outside and on the carpet and furniture (sprinkle on carpet and furniture-leave for 24 hrs-then vacuum). If it doesn't work I'm resorting to Sevin Dust outside and flea bombs inside. Good luck! |
rax Put 10team mule borax on your carpets let it set for 2 hours. It will kill the fleas. |
Comfortis ! You will have to spray your yard, Bomb your house and I also used frontline plus and everything else, then i found Comfortis. It starts working in 30 minutes and no more fleas. Remember to treat your yard and house then your pets the same day. It works !!! I had the sam problem you did |
Be careful using the comfortis on pregnant and nursing dogs. Read the label. |
what is a good thing to use in the yard? I have a flea problem also. |
I live in south georgia so fleas are year round for me! I moved into a hous infested and its taken me months to rid them all. the main thing is to vacuum vacuum vacuum. the pupae stage of the flea cannot be killed while inside its cocoon. the warmth from the vacuum helps them "hatch" so they can be killed. I would suggest vacuuming then bombimg and vacuuming more. when you apply the frontline or K9 DO NOT apply wet. when you bathe the dog is washes away its natural oils which is what spreads the medicine through the dogs skin. wash them then apply a few days later. be patiient too. I know its frustrating I've been there. and be sure to wash all pet bedding and spray anywhere the dogs gather a lot. its a long expensive process but worth it once you can control it. I can't stress the importance of vacuuming though! good luck |
My husband used a product by Spectracide called Triazicide for the yard. It is guaranteed and you only have to do it once so it says. Once and Done is what the product says. I have been fighting these little B------S!Excuse my language! I'm still scared they will be back. We have really been at war with them. Then we bombed our house and treated all the dogs with a pill called Comfortis. Hope this helps. |
