Yorkie put to sleep I am desperat need for some advise about my three year old yorkie.Ever since we got her its been one infection after another the vet gave us different type of shampoo and antibotics. They work for a while but as soon as the dose as finished it comes back again we have tried different tablets and shampoos. But we are still having problems. This morning while i was brushing her i noticed a couple of red marks on her back legs when i had a closer look it looks like another infection in both her back legs. The vet said last time we took her is that if next time she come with another infection it would be best to have her put to sleep.Because it is causing her alot of dicomfort so i was wondering what you all thought and as any body been though this before as i dont know what to do for the best.Any advice would be great. Thanks Joanne |
please get a second opionion. Have you tried changing her diet to a non alergie food? I have one that seems has been sick with either runny poop or skin infections since I got him. He is now eating prescription zd, and natural bal duck and potatoe only, no other food, he seems to be doing much better now. |
We Have Tried Two Different Vets.but They Both Said The Same Thing We Have Also Changed Her Diet But No Look |
The last resort is to put a 3 yr old down, over what I am assuming are allergies? Are these skin infections or what? Find a qualified dermatologist if there are any in your area and start there. Surely wherever you are there are Specialists? Good luck, I am in shock they want to put a 3 yr old to sleep:eek: Please give us more information on her ailments. and the things you have tried so far. Have you done an allergy test on her? Which kind? |
I'm not sure if there are hematologists or infectious diseases vets but if there are I would try consult one of them as you need to figure out why she's having many infections? Is she immune deficient in some way? Or other blood cell disorder? Is there a metabolic problem? I would try to figure it out because what if there is an underlying problem that can be resolved? |
PLease take her to specialists before you consider putting her down. Maybe these vets while might be well meaning have not come across the disease /disorder she has. There should be in your area center where there are all type of specialist. |
No Way!!!! I agree with post #3. Honey ,don't put you baby down. She's having a reaction to something. Go find someone whom is a specialist with this issue. If a dog has a skin issue, find out the cause, don't kill it. The vet should be ashamed ,and ou should switch vets. Good Luck....keep us posted. |
Does your vet do allergy tests ? It might be a good thing to know . |
The skin problem is secondary to another issue. I'd certainly seek out a specialist before putting one of mine to sleep. Here's a site with some more info... Pets Health |
I agree with everyone. I would go to a vet that does allergy testing. I would NEVER put down ANY dog (especially a 3 yr old) until they were tested for everything (JMO). My daughter's cat gets these ulcerated sores between his toes. The vet she was using just kept giving her cream to put on it and told her he didn't know what was wrong with him. She has since changed to the vet I use and they told her (after many tests) that they had never seen anything like this before and had no idea what it is. However.....they have been giving him shots and it healed! Now, they did tell her that it could come back but, with having these shots it keeps it at bay. I know these little ones can get quite expensive and it all depends on what you can afford to do but, I would try several different vets before I would make the decision to put her down. I really hope and pray that they can find out what's wrong with your little furbaby. |

Please try a specialist, even a holistic vet if there is one near by. .....he needs to find the cause and not just treat symptoms and that may be coming from the inside out....Good luck to you........ |

I would not put down such a young dog because of mites..:eek:don't give up! get 2nd 3rd or 4th opinions! did they give you a name for this allergy/mite? |
I'm sorry - I don't completely understand here - the "tests keep coming back the same" - but saying *what*??? What exactly are the tests positive for? I don't think anyone can really help with advice unless we know exactly what the infection is - yeast? Mange? Something else? What exactly has been tried in terms of meds? |
Putting your baby down would be the last thing I would do. Please try another vet. I went everywhere and probably talked to every vet in Dallas before Tina got help. Someone mentioned a holistic vet. Try that. If I lived close to one, which we don't, there is where I would take mine. We thought Mandy might have had mites for awhile. She scratched until at times I felt like crying. We went through the shots, benedryl, everything. Finally after hitting on the right food, it was that simple of a problem. That poor baby had itched for along time. Just try everything you can and I know you are. Its just a matter of hitting on the right treatment. |
Where are you located? This is insane - DO NOT PUT HER TO SLEEP - I can't understand how a Vet could tell you that... You need to tell us some more info....What have the test said? What have you been using? What works for a little and what doesn't? If this is just too much for you to handle that's ok, we understand, we can help you place her in a good Yorkie Rescue, but PLEASE DO NOT PUT HER TO SLEEP - That is NOT the answer |
Ask them to refer you to the vet school in Glasgow. Are both the vets you have been to in the same practice or different? |
Your dogs immune system is compromised and you really do need to change her diet right now. Give her ground lamb or beef and rice with some grated carrots and please add some really good vitamins. Please don't have this baby put down simply because she has mites. That is totally insane and you should change Vets. Chiggers, also called harvest mites or red bugs, live as adults in decaying vegetation. Only their larval forms are parasitic. Dogs acquire the infestation while prowling in forest grasslands and fields in late summer and fall, when chiggers are reproducing. The result is severe itching with the formation of sores and scabs. The diagnosis is made by identifying the mites by visual inspection or by microscopic examination of skin scrapings. SCABIES (sarcoptic mange) is caused by tiny spiderlike mites. Scabies is highly contagious and is transmitted primarily by direct contact and through contaminated grooming equipment and kennels. Probably no other skin disease will cause your dog to scratch and bite at his skin with such intensity. Ask the Vet. exactly what it is that your dog has. Take a pen and paper and write every detail down and let us know. |
We have been to two different vet surgery. It was the mange that she had.But now its infection from the mange for example ear infections and infections and her legs and in between her back and front legs Cindy as no hair what so ever on her tummy because of the mange the hair is also no l between her legs either. |
You can find some suggestions for her here.... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ease-help.html |

Bless her heart ....I really hope she gets treated by someone who knows what they're doing and gets better |
Has your yorkie been healthy other than this or has there been other health problems. My girl has always been healthy and had skin problems that lasted about six months that almost drove she and I and the vet crazy. Crystals were not red but crusty and we changed so many things that I can't tell really what cleared it up. Have you changed your laundry detergent lately, used bounce papers in your dryer, used swifter liquid on your tile floors etc etc. If I were to guess I would say food is the problem in most cases and vets don't know a darn thing about diet in a dog (sorry vets but they are just like Dr's with people and yet they are getting better) Her immune system could not be doing it's job and like everyone said it is most likely is an allergy. Never once did my Vet mention putting my dog down but I have no way of knowing the level of pain and discomfort your little one is going through. I have a feeling you do not have alot of vet care near you and since you have been to two, I can see how upset you must be. Call the largest University in your area and see if they have a school of V. Medicine and they are usually wonderful and the cost will not be much. Prayers coming your way. |
I didn't see until now she had mange and they didn't know what is was:confused: |
I agree with this post. The school in your country may be able to help out or atleast offer an alternative to putting your pup to sleep. I'm sure it is frustrating to deal with a sick pup like this but she could return to normal after a clear diagnosis and treatment are identified. Good luck! Quote:

Where are you located? Maybe someone who lives near you can help you or give you some other references. Please exhaust all possible options before putting your baby down...she's so young. I don't know much about what you're experiencing but it just doesn't sound life ending right now. |
