Trip from hell!! Poop problems! PLEASE help! So I flew up to NJ with Meeko on Wednesday to introduce him to my family. I tried benedryl Tuesday and it seemed to calm him down a bit. The only thing was, later that night he had mucus in his poop. At the time, I thought it was just the lettuce that my bf gave him that upset his stomach. So Wednesday morning I gave him benedryll again. He did good on the plane, barked a little on take off but, fell asleep as soon as we go into the air. Well the first 2 days he had yellow mucus in his poop. Then it turned into diarrhea. Today his stool was normal until before bed and there was mucus again. And, to make it worse, he's going to the bathroom all the time. He usually goes about 8am and then at about 9am. Every single night he's been waking me up ever 1.5 hrs to go outside. I haven't gotten any sleep. During the day he's fine, only needs to once. I called my vet and they said not to worry about it, it was probably just from the stress. But it's been going on for five days now! I went out and bought smashed pumpkin and baby rice cereal and it's been better but, it's hasn't completely solved the problem. I just don't know what to do. I'm soo stressed and soo tired!!! He's acting fine! Running around like a nut, not tired at all. I brought food (Canidae ALS) and treats from home to prevent this from happening. I gave my family strict instructions not to give him any table food at all and they haven't. I've even been giving him bottle water because I didn't want the different minerals in the tap water to effect him. I've been given him carrots since yesterday, I read somewhere that they help empty their anal glands. If this is all happening from the benedryll, shouldn't it have stopped by now. The last time I he had it was Wednesday morning at 7am. If it's due to the stress from flying, shouldn't he have calmed down by now? Anyone have suggestions? Please!!! I'll take anything!!!! Sorry this is long and about poop, kinda gross, but I need your help! |
Wow, I was gonna say it was a change in water but you are using bottled!! I know that sweet potato works the best for me in firming up the poop the fastest!! I just microwave the sweet potato, peel it and mash it. I don't know if I would give him the benedryl on the way back, maybe it was that! I wish I could help more, but you have me stumped!! |
I was going to say water too, but that's not it since you are giving him bottled water. Are you still out of town? If so, it could be the stress of the trip plus being in a strange place. If it continues tomorrow, I would call a vet and see what they recommend. I hope he gets better and you get some sleep soon! |
Thanks! Maybe I'll pick up a sweet potato tomorrow! I'm DEFINITELY NOT giving him bendryll on the way back!!! I'd rather have him awake and barking, bothering people than have my little baby sick again. We leave Wednesday night, so hopefully I can get this under control before then. If not, maybe being home will help. Thanks tho! |
Do you think he could be stressed still? He's not acting it at all. He LOVES my little brother! and my mom's dog. She has a 10yr mini schnauzer. Poor Chip, Meeko is making him run around lol All they do is play with each other. I figured since he was so active, eating well, and seems very happy, he couldn't be that stressed being in my mom's house. |
Since your mom hs a trusted Vet I would call and try to get him in to see the Dr. and have his poop checked, better safe than sorry. |
I usually use a prescription from my vet when I fly with Lola. We travel together a lot. It just calms her down for the flight. When she has diarrea I usually give her just boiled chicken and rice. It works the best for me. good luck morrislaz |
oh jill! :( so sorry to hear about the poopy situation. I was also going to mention the water.... but you're giving him bottled.... has he had that bottled water brand before? I would definitely call up your mommy's vet and get his stool checked as mentioned by another member (better safe than sorry). I hope his poop gets better soon! Bindi sends her love. |
I would definitely get a stool sample checked. He could have picked up some bacteria from anywhere...better safe than sorry. |
vet check Our Chibi has loose stools for 3 days once, it turned out to be an infection. The vet said that if he were a smaller dog(he's 10 lbs) he would have been in worse condition(dehydrated...). He wasn't as energetic, but sometimes it's hard to tell with Yorkies. I would have the/(your mom's vet) vet check your baby's stools. If nothing, then it may be stress. Even being a new place can cause stress to your little one. I hope Meeko feels better soon!!! |
Mucus in the poop can be a symptom of Giradia (which is a parasite). Any type of stress can make a tiny trace of Giardia become full-blown. A simple stool sample can diagnosis this. If it what he has, your mom may want to treat her dog, too as it can be very contagious from animal to animal. All bedding, clothings, toys will also need to be disinfected. Good luck and hope it's nothing major!!! |
I tried calling my my mom's vet but, they couldn't see us before Wednesday. I'll google some other vets now and try to get him in today or tomorrow. He's never had this brand of water, maybe it's that? At home I give him tap water that's filtered through the Brita faucet. My mom doesn't have one, she gets the 5 gallons of Poland Spring Water and uses those coolers. I was also thinking maybe the change in weather could do it. It's been 80 at home every day pretty much, no colder than 75 with the AC on. Here it's been in the 40s & 50s the whole time. Any ideas on why it's so frequent at night? From about 10pm to 5am, he wakes up every 1-1.5 hours to poop. During the day he only goes once or twice. |
Oh gosh, I hate those mucus poops. I would try to feed him bland. Rice and Boiled Chicken. You need to give his GI track a rest. This could be happening for a # of reasons. Stress, Parasite or something he ate that is irrating his GI track. Pepto can help as well. 1 cc Also he may need some 'good bacteria' - yogurt (organic, low fat, low sugar (no fake sugar though) |
I don't wanna hold his food because he's only a puppy, 6 months. I don't want to have problems with his sugar. I'm gonna run to the grocery store and get pedialyte and some yogurt and give me a little. I got a vet to squeeze him in at 5:30. Now my luck is he won't poop before then. Ugh I'm getting really worried. We fly back to Florida on Wednesday night. |
hey J, best of luck at the vet this afternoon. dont forget to mention everything you mentioned to us. perhaps note it down so you dont forget any of lil details. He'll poop for ya dont worry :) Bindi always poops after dinner maybe give him his dinner early and hope for the best? <3 V |
