I am so glad I came across this... besides being funny and gross, my little TJ is 5 months old now, and yesterday, he did that. I was floored. I have never seen him do anything like that before. I am home all the time and we are almost always together. I didn't know what to think.

I once had a vet tell me they are missing something in their diet, and there is probably a fair amount of unabsorbed nutrients left in the poo. That is not to say that what you are feeding them currently is bad it is just that right now their bodies are craving something else, more carbs, more protein, less carbs, etc.
So my recommendation is switch their food to something you normally do not feed, it will take about a week to see a change. We have done this with our Yorkie and with our Brittney Spaniels and it has always worked. And with our oldest Brittney who will be 11 this year there has only been 1 -2 times we have ever had to switch.
If that does not work I don't know.. I will say it has only worked to stop them from eating their own poo, the cat poop is still a delicacy.

Lilly does this too. She's almost a year old. It makes me sick to my stomach :( I've never had any of my Yorkies do this except for Lilly and Jersey and they both had rough starts early in life and I wonder if that has something to do with it. I haven't spoken to my vet yet as I thought she'd outgrow it but she's not :o Elaine

Thanks for the suggestions. I will try switching their food and see if that helps. At this point, I am ready to try anything. They both get canned meat twice a day. And there is always dry dogfood down. Sandy has never done this, but TJ did.

Do you have any recommendations on what kind of food would be better? They are currently on Iams meat, Iams dry puppy food and another dry food that is made just for adult Yorkies. ( I forget the name, but there is only one feed store here that carries it.) I also give them carrots and apples.

I don't know if there's anything to this idea or not, but Abby and Baby Girl eat poo and it just happens to be that they only eat Gracie's poo. Gracie has a diet of mostly chicken and rice because of her stomach problems. She also takes her med mixed in pet tenic which both the others like the taste of very much. I'm wondering if her poo smells like these things to them and that's why they like it so much. Who knows, I just wish they would stop because it's so blame nasty and their breath will stop a train. And they hate getting their teeth brushed!

We started feeding Buddy (7 months old) Nutro Ultra Holistic and he stopped eating his poo. He was previously on Eukanuba.
I am sure you have read lots of the threads on food and we too once used Iams and had all sorts of problems with our dogs (Brittney Spaniels) so you may want to switch away from all the IAMS food. We had one of our dogs on it for 10 years and her health got to be so poor that we actually talked about putting her down, then decided to switch food on a recommendation and doing just that has improved her health dramatically. We are so glad we did not put her down now!!! If you have not checked out dogfoodanalysis.com you should give it a look.
