It will usually last for just 24 hours but you have to watch them to make sure they don't get sick. It may take a few days to get out of their system so it may just be that.....do yourself a favor, it's not a needed shot so just tell the vet next time to skip it....if he insists, then after the shot don't leave her alone at all. It's just not good.

Dawn

I hope that helped a little.

Sadie has never had a fear of much of anything. She loves people, and I need
to really watch her all of the time as she will run right up to them.

I did ask my vet about Lepto, and he said she needs it in this area.

I am to the point that I may only give her the rabies shots. Better yet,
I need to sit down with my vet in a year and tell him that I don't want that part, and maybe the corona portion of the booster as well.

This is all so baffling.

Thanks for your help.

I brought her home and she was fine until the next day. Since then, she has not been herself, but the vet's nurse said this sometimes happens with small dogs and shots.

Yesterday, I was feeding her dinner and a lid fell off the countertop and onto the floor, next to where she was eating. Seconds later, she was pawing at my knees and wanted up. I held her, and since then she shakes and pants, off and on.

I used some anti-anxiety drops that the vet gave me two years ago, as she has separation anxiety. But, she is hardly ever alone so I never used it until today. Within minutes she was very calm, but it only lasted about an hour.

I am going to get her into see my vet tomorrow, but can anyone tell me if they have had this problem, and do you think it is related to her shots that she had a week ago.

Thank you so much.

Hi,

I have a male yorkie, Cody, who turned 13 years old in January. He has always been very happy and chipper. He follows me around like my little baby. I took him in on May 5, 2008 for his rabies shot. He was good until Sunday later in the day when I noticed he did not want to walk. I called my vet on Tuesday morning and spoke to the technician. She said this was a normal reaction for small pets. There is also a swollen spot on his upper left shoulder from the shot. I do have to take him back on May 17th for the balance of his shots. I will have the vet look at him and assess his health condition at that time. I have never had problems with him "shaking". I am sure your little one does not like the vet. My suggestion to you would be to make sure that you are with your pet at all times at while at the vet and ask lots of questions.

Has anyone had any problems with their Yorkie walking after a rabies shot?

Sadie did not have a problem walking, but she had joint pain when it came to stepping up over the door threshold, after coming in from going potty.

She would wait for me to pick her up. The vet gave me a liquid med. to help with joint pain which she took for five days.

She is back to normal, and yes, I was with the vet the entire time she was having her physical/shots.

I found out why she shook so much. I dropped a plastic lid from the countertop, and she ran. I got to thinking about it, and I believe the lid hit her in the head. I was washing dishes when she ran up to put her paw on my knee, and wanted to be held. She shook for a week afterwards, but is fine now.

I spent alot of time holding her during this week, and moved her dish to another room. She still is leery about going into the kitchen, but she does eat there now.

How is Cody doing now, and what did you find out?

This is baffling! Please keep us posted on your little furbaby.

All, please, please, please do some checking on the Lepto shot!!! My sister (vet tech) was at the vet convention in Maryland and they had a huge training class on this. Many vets have stopped the Lepto shot in small dog breeds due to an adverse reaction causing sickness and sometimes fatal consequences with this shot. The shot is not necessary although helpful but why risk your pet for a shot that is not meeded.
PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING ARTICLES IF YOUR VET WILL BE ADMINISTERING THIS SHOT!!!!!!

Ask the vet what shots he is giving and YOU make the choice. It's your pet and you have the right to know.

Thanks for sharing! Yes, Cody had the LEPTO vaccine. I will call my vet on Monday morning and inform him of his condition. He can walk but not as well as when I took in him for his shot a week ago. I do have to take him back in a week. I'll update you on his progress. He has a large lump in his upper left shoulder from the shot. How unfair for this little one to suffer. Again, thanks for sharing the website information.

I am the same way as most people, if the vet says he needs to do the shots then it must be necessary and needed and the vet would never put my baby at risk.....right? Wrong!! Unfortuneately many are not holding themselves to the standard of a physician which is what they are. We need to be informed and then able to make a decision. I really think I am going to post a new thread on this. There are a lot of new people here including me that may not have this info and may regret it.

This is truly an eye opener. I am thinking about just getting the Rabies shots for Sadie from now on, but I will do more homework.

Thanks for sharing these sites.

How is Cody doing now? This is scary, and I hope he is better. Has the lump gone away? Update please.

I sure hope Sadie will be feeling better asap. I am so sorry she has felt like that.
My Suzi is going to the vet tommorow. She does get very shaky when frightend too. We were outside yesterday and a transformer blew. Poor little suzi shook and shook foe at least 30 min. I held her close too.

Sadie is almost back to her normal self. She shakes a tiny bit some times, but not like she did at first.

Is Suzi getting her shots tomorrow? I wish you luck with the vet visit.

I hate it when they shake. We feel so helpless when that happens.

Thanks for posting.

How did Suzi do at the vet's today? I hope all went well.

The vet was a little far away from us. Sure enough she vomited from the car ride. Only once, but enough to make a mess. lol.
i found out that the breeder had given her the first two shots herself!:( And had also dewormed her twice herself.
Suzi had never even been to the vet: mad: ! She was a champ though! The vet told me to start the vaccines over because the kind she got is not as effective as the ones they give at a vets. SO Suzi had a shot. The vet also told me that you can't over vaccinate. That was my fear when he told me to do them again.
Suzi was just fine too. She weighs 3.5 lbs;) And healthy. She is actually 10 weeks old. She has an enormous amount of energy and plays hard, sleeps hard .
Suzi has barked too a little, and I have heard her growl. Very cute though .
She loves her toys and is starting to chew on everything. I am so glad I took her to the vet when I did. I have her on a puppy package where everything is paid for up to 4 months. Not if she gets ill though, just reg. visits and shots.

Glad to hear Suzi is doing well. Best wishes.

I am glad Suzi did just fine. I did not realize she is a newborn.

I was surprised to read that you cannot over vaccinate a dog. This is not what others have been telling me, and this little girl is only ten weeks old.

I am not a vet though, so I am super glad that all went well.

Go Suzi!

mscat 05-14-2008 10:43 PM

I even did a web search on the issue and did not find anything about it. All I have heard is that the boosters can be rough on a dog. My dog seems very healthy and active. However, I feel like a a worry wart at the same time.
I am also not going to let her play outside for a while..... To protect her from all the yucky stuff pupps are so susiptable to... I have let her play on the grass a few times, but the vet did not reccomend it.
She is a stalky little yorkie, but, it really is mostly her hair. I am teaching her to like to be brushed right now, and get her use to it. ;)
