Spaying Checklist? Bella's appointment is next week to get spayed :( While I'm happy she won't go into heat again, I'm starting to get really nervous. I was so worried when Rocky got neutered, but he did o.k, so at first I thought that would help me since I already had one small dog go under anesthetic, but as the time gets closer I'm getting more and more worried. So I found ANOTHER vet, long story short, one of our vets were way to expensive, and the other one that Rocky did get neutered at are very rude to me, so I'm not giving them my business anymore. Our friends go to another vet, so I looked into them and liked them, so that's where Bella is going to go. So she went to get her bloodwork done today to make sure she's healthy to undergo the surgery, and here's everything I got covered so far, can you guys think of anything else I need to make sure is done so she'll be safer? Bloodwork Painmeds to bring home Isoflourine (sp?) anesthetic She will be monitered when having the surgery by machines She can come home the same day Is there anything else important that I'm forgetting? I feel like there is. |
As about an IV. It's good to keep them hydrated being as they will be without food for a while. Otherwise your set as you can be. |

Things you can do at home. onsies so she cant lick her stiches.... Get lots of sleep the night before in case your up with her the night of the spay. ( I was all night) Soft food if she is getting teeth out. bath the day before the spay insist on pain meds to come home with! |

I concur with the IV and Ellie is not allowed to have surgery unless it is on a heated surface. They can lose body heat way too quickly... |
I had to always leave mine all night, but, the vets are up there all night with them..I had asked about bringing Ginger home that night, but, they prefer them up there in case anything would go wrong..she said the first night they mostly sleep anyway.. I know the vets changed it in the last year here, where now they can have water up until the time you take them in. |

Thank you guys soo much! All your advice is definitly appreciated! I have to bookmark this thread now so I'll remember to write it down when I go! I just can't wait until this whole ordeal is over with. |
no advice, just want to say good luck! I can remember when my first "baby" was spayed. My pit Laney was 4 months old and only 4lbs. I was a nervous wreck and cryed the WHOLE day til my boss finally say, take off early and go get your girl. Laney was fine after the spay, other than pulling one stitch and it bleeding a bit. |
Mia was 3lbs when I spayed her. She had IV fluids, pain meds to go home, she got microchipped and teeth pulled, I had a preemie onesie for her (you put it on backwards snaps on the back) and cut a hole in the back to allow her to poop. Rest for the first few days and soft dog food. She may not want to pee or poop in the begining but she will eventually. She tried running around the following day. I had to try to keep her still. Good Luck!!! |

Sadie was uncomfortable and whined al night long. If you can get that night off you might want to. I don't hink your going to want to leave her. Sadie was walking around the next day, I had to keep her quiet because toward the end of the day she wanted to play with Chewy and I had to put her in her x pen off and on to keep her quiet. She ate great when she got home, peed and pooped fine. There was a little blood in her pee and they told me that was normal. It was scary but it went away after 2 days... |
SOunds like great advice. Good Luck I will be keeping good thoughts for you both. |
just want to say best of luck and a speedy recovery!!!! only thing i'd add is,, Go Laser Surgery if at ALL possible,, did laser for Cricket,,, didnt for Daisy,, HUGE difference in recovery and pain for the,, so IMHO, GO LASER! :aimeeyork :aimeeyork :aimeeyork |
Just wanted to say good luck! |
And,, thought of a couple more things,, in case shes not microchipped already,, good time to do that,, as well as pull any teeth that may need it,, just a thought for while she's out already,, and they can also dremmel toenails at the same time for a lesser charge,, Best of Luck, i'm sure it will all go well for ya both! |
Also make sure the person monitering her will not be the vet that's doing her surgery (yes, some vets do this to save money) The vet has enough to do without watching the moniters |
I would never neuter my Rocky. If there is a chance I might loose my loved one, I am not doing it. And I would kill myself if something happened, just because I wanted to neuter him. |

Good luck with Bella's surgery! |
Wish you all the best, and hope the little monkey will recover very fast. !!!! |
I was very nervous when Lucy got spayed since he bloodwork prior had come back abnormal, but after much thought and consideration and consultation wiht the vet who assured me she would be okay. I took the plunge and guess what she did wonderfully. But the vet did recommend that she not fast an enitre 12 hours prior to surgery and so she just fasted 8 hours, also, they injected her iv with gluclose during the surgery to make sure she didn't get a low blood sugar attack. As far as at home, I used onesies on my Lucy to prevent her from licking her stitches, it really helped, the vet said she'd never seen an incision heal so beautifully. |
2 Attachment(s) I don't know how big your baby is, but when my Lucy was spayed she was to small for a onesie, too, so I cut an ankle sock into a kind of sweater. Here's a couple of pics. QUOTE=Rae Rae;1856119]Oh yeah I totally forgot, I have a couple diapers (Onseys are to big for her) from when she was in heat, I was going to ask the vet, but you guys could probably answer this, if I should put those on her to keep her from licking her stitches, or would that probably irritate it? Also, I requested the day she's spayed off work, well that day, not that night (if I have to I'd work like 4-9:30, that's when Leo will be home to watch her) then the whole next day off of work so I can be with her and watch her. I'm pretty sure she'll just be sleeping the whole time, but just to stay here and make sure she's comfortable.[/QUOTE] |
Her bloodwork wasn't good I was on my way to school and the vet called, saying that she wasn't too happy with the results on the bloodwork done yesterday. Her kidney enzymes are a little low, and her glucose levers are kinda high. She wants me to bring in a urine sample ASAP, I would've today but they closed before I got home so I'm going to do that tomarow when I get off work. I really didn't get to ask a lot of questions because I was driving and knew I wouldn't remember half of it anyways, but tomarrow I definitly will ask all my questions. I didn't think something like this could happen. Bella always seems so healthy, so energetic and full of life. I'm hoping this is nothing serious and it can be corrected. I'm about to go do some research on this now, but if anyone has anything that can help me, or knows anything about this it'd mean a lot. Please keep her in your prayers. I was already worrying about her just going under, but now with this, I'm even more worried about her going under, and what if she's really sick. I've been fighting back tears all day whenever I start to think about it. I don't know how serious it is, and I watch her playing around right now and it breaks my heart that what if she is sick. Ok I have to stop now, I'm going to start bawling. I know YT are really strong, so please keep my little girl in your guys' prayers. |
Anyone have any ideas? I've been googling ever since I posted this (and browsing YT) and I can't find anything! Alls I'm finding is high gluclose levels is usually diabetes, I honestly don't think that's it though, because the vet said "kinda" high, unless she wanted to talk to me in person about how serious it is. I can't really find anything on low kidney enzymes though. :( |
I hope Bella is ok! I wish I could give you some advice, but I really don't know what any of that means. Please let us know when you find out. Hopefully it's very minor and she can go ahead and be spayed with no problems. :) |
What did the vet say when you talked further on this? Did they give you anymore info? Sorry I missed this earlier, I don't really have any help to give you, but once you know for sure what is going on, then the others will give you some help. |
I hope your little girl is okay. Please if you need urgent advise on health issues you might want to start a new thread. There are many here that might help but they might not see this. |
I'm still waiting for Bella to pee so I can get the sample, we have until 4:30...don't know if she'll go by then, any tips on making them pee? I tried looking online for any information, the only thing I really found was diabetes if glucose is high, but I don't think (and am praying) that's not it because she just said that they were "kind of" high, not really high and from what I read it's diabetes if it's really high. |
