Two rows of teeth? I was looking in Tucker's mouth yesterday and realised that he has two rows of teeth. I'm assuming that one row are his baby teeth and the other row are his adult teeth? None of the teeth seem to be loose at all. He is getting neutured on Monday and I called the vet to make sure they would be removing his baby teeth. He said that they wouldn't exract teeth on such a young dog and that we would have to wait and see if his adult teeth pushed his baby teeth out because they could mess up his mouth at such an early age. Are two rows of teeth that don't seem to be loose at all normal in a 6 month old puppy? |
Gizzie had this too, the vet said its very common in these dogs so he just removed hers with her spay and she was 6 or 7 months old... |
My vet removed my dogs at their spay/neuter also. They were 6 and 7 mos |
Autumn had this also. The vet removed her puppy teeth when she was 6 months old. She was actually getting food caught between the two sets of teeth. You should really talk to your vet. Why put them under twice when he can remove the teeth when the are out for the neuter!!! |
My vet said that removing his teeth right now could really mess up his mouth. I'm going to get a second opinion. Thanks guys. |
Ok. I just spoke with another vet in my area. They said that they usually would not remove teeth unless they were really impacted and were older. I said that my concern was him being put under twice. And she said that was the normal procedure. What in the world? Should I call for a third opinion? |
I would think that by leaving the teeth in would do more harm then good. There is going to be food stuck and you would have to brush constantly and Im sure that could get rather smelly if you cant get the food out! You have to be comfortable w/the decision - it is your pet but I would want them out the first time. Why have to pay twice for your pup to be put under when they are already going to be under!!!! |
Preston is scheduled for his neuter on 3/10/08. He will be almost 8 months old. He is having his baby teeth removed at the same time. Michelle |

When I had my Max neutered at 6 months, I too requested his baby teeth be removed. When I came to pick him up the teeth had not been pulled and the vet also said he was too young to have them pulled yet. I then had to have him put under a couple months later to have them pulled. I was furious. I know many vet will pull them at this time. Max's lower canines are now pushed out as a result of the baby teeth being in there too long. I would find another vet to do the procedure |
Oh, my gosh...I thought I had the only puppy with this problem. Sophie was spade at seven months and the vet removed the second row at the same time. She's 9 months now and she's fine. Another vet, in a different state, removed my sister's morkie's extra teeth when she was fixed. Her dog is 14 months now, and she's fine, too. We just thought it would be best not to put our dogs under twice. Maybe you should ask one more vet...or would that just confuse things? Good luck and let us know how things work out for your baby. Cali has the double teeth and when she was spayed during a emergency surgery I asked them to remove the baby teeth she was 8 months old and they said they didn't normally pull teeth as this was an er hospital but they would try and get them out. But they said they couldn;t keep her under any longer as she was losing body heat so she still has a lot of her baby teeth. With her liver problems I have been afraid to have her put under so they have stayed. I would definatley find a vet who will remove them at the same time. |
Pixie is 9 months old and still has 2 rows of teeth..I'm leaving them as long as possible in the hope they will come out by themselves! she lost a back tooth a couple of weeks back while playing with a toy. I'm worried leaving them so long will ruin the shape of her mouth? |
First of all, the person you bought your Yorkie from should have told you that yorkies are prone to not loosing their teeth, so you would have expected it. I go to a animal hospital, there are about 7 vets that work there and they are top of the line (more expensive) but current on all new info, procedures etc. Anyway, they also are preventative. If you do not remove those baby teeth, you take a chance of infection (because the food gets trapped), and of theyre teeth getting out on line, the baby teeth often times will shift the permanant teeth, messing up their bite. Its important they come out. |
Yes, Gemma still has extra teeth and she is now 1 year and almost 2months! She looks like a shark! Anyway, I think she was nearly 11 months old when I finally had her spayed (she was too tiny so I waited) and he "said" he was extracting the baby teeth however they only pulled the 4 back teeth! I was angry because like you, I don't want her to have to go under a second time! And she STILL has baby teeth even now and food gets stuck in there and it drives me nuts! Truffles had TEN teeth pulled while she was spayed at about 7 months old and all my others also had their teeth pulled during the surgery and they were 6 months old.... |
