 Would not recemmend VPI Pet Insurance I purchased VPI Pet Insurance for Teddi because she was the most expensive dog I have ever bought so I thought it would be a good thing to get insurance plus I saw signs up at my work that they offer the insurance through payroll deduction. Well....the insurance is horrible and I don't even know why I have it! When I had to get Teddi's teeth pulled because they were impacted they didn't cover anything - they said they don't cover any baby teeth extractions. When Teddi got sick in November I submitted all her bills and they said that they don't cover liver shunts and because the final result was a liver shunt they won't cover it. They said they go by the end result and it doesn't matter than I took her in for reasons unknown they go by the end result. I think it is HORRIBLE that they won't cover ANYTHING. Even my vet thought they would pay up until we got a confirmed diagnosis but they said no. Apparently if the diagnosis is not on their list of covered things they don't cover it...they don't actually print a list of what is not covered. I feel like I am wasting my money by paying $33.86 a month for the policy! Just venting! Grrrrrr |
That's unfortunate for you. I'm very sorry you've had such a bad experience. It's stories like this that make me think my money would be better spent saved in a cookie jar. |
Thats what I heard about it so I didnt get it |
Wow I would ask for a full refund of all I had paid and cancel the insurance. I know I have never heard anything good on dog insurance and I wouldn't have it. Put the amount in a saving account and then pay for anything that comes up.... I sorry you had such a problem. |
I've seen other bad reviews of the pet insurance. We were going to get it when we first got Rocky, but didn't and now I'm glad because it seems like it's just a waste of money. |

Yipes! I'm sorry they are not refunding you anything. I carry that insurance for Buddy as well. I have not used it, thank heavens, however, I have pages of things they do pay. It looked worth it to me. He was hospitalized before I got it and the bill was 2,200.00. From the printout I have for the ins. they would have covered quite a bit on all the procedures that were done to him. Sorry they didn't pay anything against your bill. I don't blame you for being upset. Hope your little one will be ok. |
This is the same reason why I never got pet insurance. |

I canceled out VPI Insurance 6 months after getting Dior. They barely cover anything . I have a Credit card with no balance and a separate checking account for their medical bills. |
I have it on 3 of my 4 dogs. Cali was a very sick puppy and a lot of her expenses were denied because of the liver shunt but I did get close to 2,000 reimbursed on over 7000 in bills. On Pixie I fortunately only had to use it for 2 minor emergencies and got back about 300 out of 700. On Dixie (RIP) I only had her for 5 weeks before she passed and she had 1700 in bills VPI paid nothing due to it being congenital kidney failure. They did just refund all of my premium without my asking, it was 36.00 for the 5 weeks she was covered. I have it on Roxie and hope i won't need it. I just figure with 4 dogs if any one had a major accident or illness I would have the insurance to fall back on. I think for all 3 my premiums are 64.00 a month. I know I could save that but I wouldn't. |

Very sad that they charge so much and pay out so little. Sorry that happened but I think most of these insurances are the same. |
I got the carecredit card for some dental work that I had to have done and you can put vet bills on there too. There is free financing depending on the amount you put on the card. If it is 300 then you get 3 months interest free and for 1000 you get 12 months free. (I think that is the amounts, not certain though.) But, it is an easy way to pay off bills and you cant charge anything but medical bills on it. I think that it would be a good alternative to pet insurance. |
When Pet Insurance first came out (don't recall what company) We noticed right away it would not be of much use since it only covered things that are the least likely to go wrong. It's how they are getting rich. ;) |
this was very helpful I was just in the process of researching insurance for louie |

Some companies won't cover problems specific to a breed (therefore Yorkie livers aren't covered). Then they won't cover preexisting conditions. If they won't cover those then Ellie's liver, pancreas, allergies, frequent urination, yeast infections in ears, eye discharge and periodontal problems wouldn't be covered. I think it's too late for us.;) Also, some companies start over after every year and won't cover any condition that the dog got in the last year because it is preexisting... The one type of insurance that could possibly be worth it is injury insurance. It is low cost and I think they pay a great deal of the bill.. |
I insured Jambo with Pet Plan after doing a lot of research into the different insurance companies. I noticed that VPI and others covered some routine care which Pet Plan did not. It was between Pet First (newer company) and Pet Plan. I went with Pet Plan because they did not have incident maximums, you can choose the deductible and co-pay, and they cover hereditary diseases which I am guessing that liver shunts fall into. I figured I can take care of routine costs (hate doing paperwork anyway) and I wanted insurance for the big cost emergencies. I haven't had to use it so far but I feel comfortable with the plan. I paid a little over $300 for the year with $50 deductible per incident (paid only once if multiple treatments but same issue) and $0 co-pay (didn't want to pay deductible and a balance). |
1 Attachment(s) I got the ASPCA insurance and so far they have helped with 1 vet charge per year and all vaccines and any illness. I know they don't cover any prexisting condition or any hereditary conditions. The store where i got him coveres hereditary for 2 years. However they have paid on the rest, i have only had it for 4 mos. but i can't complain yet. The 80% they pay has helped. Sorry you had a bad experience.:( |
I think I've only heard one person ever say that they thought pet insurance was worth it. Even better than using Carecredit, why not put the $35 you would spend on pet insurance in a savings account especially for emergency vet bills? If you don't touch it unless you absolutely have to, it will grow to a sizeable amount in no time. Unexpected vet bills are part of owning a dog and I think everyone should be prepared for them. |
If you read the brochure on VPI they tell you up front that they do not cover any known breed related health problems, but they do cover other things. I now have too many dogs to have the pet insurance, but when I did carry it, I had the wellness coverage also and it covered dentals for adults, yearly shots and exams, heartworm and flea medicines, and emergency visits. I more than got my money's worth for my guys, but now it is just too expensive for all my dogs and cats. You really need to read everything before taking on any insurance policy. It is the same as human insurance, if you have any health problems, you can not get an insurance policy to cover it. |
