| ![]() My yorkie Harley has recently starting itching about month or so ago. The breeder started him out on Eukanuba and when he was about 1 year I switched to Science Diet ( which he loves, hardly would eat the Eukanuba). After reading about how Science Diet is not rated high and that some food with corn cause skin allergies- now am concerned about what food to try. He has now been on science diet about 6 months. I have not switched his shampoo or conditioner - use Chris Christensen since he was a puppy. He has not had Frontline since October. Vet does recommended Benadryl, wants to use prescription meds as last resort.. Benadryl- can not tell that it works.. I am open to any suggestions and recommendations... Thanks in advance for all your help ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Senior Yorkie Talker | ![]() I have a similar problem, Tara has developed dry skin condition around her legs and butt area. I have tried creams and now I give her a capsule of evening primrose oil and cod liver oil. The legs have cleared out partly, still feels dry though and peeling dry skin. She is still on Purina-Bakers puppy complete, but planning to switch as I heard it wasn't the most nutritious dry food. I want to try Orijen but some say it can cause liver damage in puppies, so I myself am stuck. I also use Chris Christensen shampoo and baby conditioner once a week. I also use Ice on ice from CC for grooming. I wonder what food would help her skin. I also used disinfecting wipes on occasion and they may have started it off all, but don't think the food helps. Anyone has some ideas? |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ![]() I think getting off the SD would be great - it's chock full of allergens. What are you hoping to go for - kibble, canned, home cooked, or raw? From there, I'd have several suggestions. If kibble is your dealio - I'd probably suggest Natures Variety Instinct, Orijen 6 Fish, Wellness, Evangers....if you could get some of the same brands in canned and mix w/ kibble, even better. If you could stay away from chicken for awhile, even better. ![]()

| ![]() I have been on vacation and while I was, Harley really started itching like crazy so I went out and got him Canidae-- was shocked over the price- Had been spending almost $20.00 for Science Diet and thought I was giving him the best and thanks to YorkieTalk.com and the list of recommended top dog foods found out the truth. He has been on the new food about a week and can already see a big difference!!!!!!!! I am going to switch my cats to the cat brand. I have spent so much money on my pets thinking I was giving them the best and boy am I grateful for the knowledge gained on this website. So thank you to everyone who shares their time and knowledge!!! I will keep you posted on his progress, the great part is the small bag was only $6.79 for a small bag---- could not believe it--- Thanks again to everyone--if this does not work I will be back in touch!!!! |
