Thank you for your suggestion to re-home. However, on the flip side of that is what happens if in the new home the new owners are not as tolerant? Barking can become a trigger for some people whom you'd never suspect to be abusive. A kick, a slap across the muzzle, from people who appear to be model pet lovers. I've personally seen this. No, re-homing is not an option in this instance. Unless of course, the dog is taken from her because of annoyance barking in her new home. If that's the case, we then have to deal with a traumatic separation, and the depression that follows of both dog, and owner. It's not something I want to see done. It's not something she wants to do. |
We are working with the coins in a can, and a squirt bottle. The collar failed. This would be an emergency alternative, surgical intervention. :) Thanks again. |
Maybe she should get rid of the yorkie and get a besenji(sp) they're the only dog that doesn't bark..I rehomed my maltese because of the high pitched bark....I thought about the surgery, but, decided real quick no, as I thought it was cruel(after reading up on it)..now, she's in a fantastic home, and that's the main thing.. |
I use a I use a barking collar on my boobah. It doesnt shock the dog but emits a high pitch noise. Boobah has considerably calmed down since using this barking collar. I wouldnt dare use the shock treatment on my dog. Before, boobah got into a dog's face and barked incessantly, non stop. But using this collar has improved it 70%! Gina, on the other hand, barks only when she is annoyed by a larger dog. She is the little one on the right side of the avatar. |

There are several stop barking mechanizims on the market. I tried the sonar one. I forget the name but any pet store carries them. It was run by batteries and sat on a counter, table etc and when the dog barked only he heard a high pitch noise in his ear's which is suppose to make the dog stop and listen and each time he barks it happens again. It did not work for Buddy but all dogs are different. Maybe this yorkie would be more sensitive to it's sound. |

The shock collars do work, if the dog is over 5 lbs...my mom ordered one and used it on her morkie, only took one time of knocking him on his butt(he also had the high pitched aggrivating bark), but, now, all she has to do is show it to him and he shuts up. |
I don't have any experience with this procedure so I can't help you there. I do hope that your friend and her dog will be able to stay together and I hope that you will find some answers and HELPFUL comments and not just negative opinions... |
The Dog Whisperer There was a message I read here about the dog whisperer. Well, the doggie park where I take my two girls, boobah and gina, there are many people who have tried the dog whisperer. Caesar Millan. Some have told me it helped a lot others said it was money down the drain. FYI |
I know that if there was a "life or death" reason (and I had no other choice) I'd rather debark Baby then give her away. She is my life, and I wouldn't want to live without her. Now, with that being said, I know I will never have to deal with that situation so she will never be debarked. If I have to move into an apartment, it will be one that allows pets. Good luck with your friend/family member. Too bad the assisted living didn't have a "dog" wing. ;) |
Can I ask if the dog is elderly also or is he young? If he is young then he will most likely outlive the lady and still be debarked for life. Is there any chance you could get her a cat to take with her and re-home the dog? |
