On "It's Me or The Dog" the other night, they had two undocked Yorkies on there. They were adorable!! Coby said he wants his tail back. ;)

wiggy tails or waggy tails - that is the question....
 

Daisy our yorkie/chi mix has a tail - I love it. At first it seemed weird because Sam, our boxer has a docked tail. Of course, I think his little waggy stub is adorale, too, so I guess I'm on the fence on this issue. However....

Our first boxer, Buster, had cut ears, but we soon realized that his cut ears were sensitive, he didn't like us to pet them. My daughter and I love to pet and smooch Sammy, our second boxer's ears, so we didn't have them cut. We love his soft, floppy ears. He is a little more prone to yeast infection, though.

I love the docked look, but I mself couldn't TAKE a puppy to get it's tail docked, and I wouldn't want to make the choice knowing I caused it. I think Sadie loves to wag her little tail... it warms the heart to see it!:) :love: :yelrotflm :yelrotflm

I'm a bit confused, do US show dogs only show in the US? do they not compete in crufts etc? if so how do they get round that all the european competitions will want tails yet the US dogs won't have 1? :confused:

Oh i meant to say aswell, about it being in the history of the breed, i read somewhere once that a lot of dogs starting having their tails cut off by their owners because in old england they brought in a tax on keeping a dog as a pet but not on working dogs (who normally had their tail off) so pet owners started docking the tails to try to make out they had working dogs. I don't know how true it is tho?

I 've got my yorkie male from Germany while I was living there(army wife) and he was undocked, at first didn't notice, and then the breeder told me that they don't do that anymore, and believe me , they love dogs,they reallyyyyy dooo, Pets can go to restaurants, malls, supermarkets, hotels, rented houses, you actually have petsitters if you want at the hotel.They love more animals than people :eek: , So now that I have the puppies , I didn't do it either. And I ckecked to AKC and you know what.... is not a requirement anymore to register them. So maybe the "standars" are changed already(except shows:confused: )But is the people that just want them for showing off that they ask for this. Declawed? Since when they become cats?I'm sorry, is my way of thinking.....;)

I feel very sorry for the puppies that suffered because the breeders didn't know how to properly dock. Likewise, I feel sorry for the dogs that suffer because someone bred them and didn't educate and prepare first. Should breeding not be allowed any more either? The blame in both cases should be placed on the breeder that didn't know what they were doing, not on the docking/breeding process.
You often hear 'horror stories' regarding this procedure as a basis for it being cruel, however, these examples are the product of someone who should have never touch the dogs to begin with, not the nature of the procedure itself. When someone with proper knowledge of docking performs it, the dogs feel very little discomfort--our past litters haven't so much as woken up when their tails have been docked and there was no blood at all.

I love the comparison and have often thought the same! Having a babies ears pierced is something I never understood and that I completely disagree with. :thumbdown

Well, the problem is the dog will get bred and the breeders will muck it up as it's all about money. When there will be a trend to not dock tails there will be less pain for these poor pups that might not make it, because they someone messes with their tails. I don't think it should be outlawed I think the practice should be abandoned altogether. Seriously would you want your finger cut even though it maybe hurts just 5 seconds? I don't think so.
God gave them tails, it's better for them to have it.
One thing is having ears pierced and one having tail cut. We don't really know if it hurts the dog or not. They are tiny puppies they will not say ouch it hurts. We assume it doesn't hurt them much. But it doesn't improve their quality of life and there's no reason for it.

I don't think you can compare a ear piercing with cutting a tail.......there is so much diference between that, and I thanks my mom for doing that when I was a newborn, because you remenber the pain when you get older . My daugther , she didn't even wake up when she had that done. Puppies have tails sensitive, and they have nerves too.:(

Your right...the differnce between the two is non-comparable. With dogs, we make life altering, permanent choices for them everyday as owners. For humans, we shouldn't do it at all, but rather allow them the choice to grow up and make that choice on their own. :cool: Ah, but that's a different debate altogether...;)

Again..."breeders" muck up everyday out of unpreparedness and lack of knowledge for the sake of the almighty dollar. Not condoning that, but what is the difference? The "muck ups" come from those who don't know what they are doing...not so much from those who do. We don't abandon breeding because others are messing up...why abandon this?

Funny you should mention that as I actually DID have a portion of my finger cut completely off...and then reattached. My reaction was, "Where is all this blood coming from" because with the nerves having been severed, I didn't feel a thing.:) But that's beside the point...

You can't judge by their reaction if it hurts or not? Puppies or not, if they feel pain, they WILL react. So my brain tells me if they sleep through it, it didn't hurt.
Furthermore, the blood flow and nerve reaction in puppies in extremities (ears, tails) do not fully function as an adult's in the immediate days follwing their birth, which is why the procedure is done in the first few days of the pups' life. This is a FACT, not an assumption.

I can't argue with you that there is "no reason for it" because really, there isn't. There is "no reason" for alot of things we do with our dogs daily that we do, but we do it anyway.

I respect your and everyone's opinion, I just don't happen to agree. I am likewise not oppose to giving reasons and explanations as to why anyone is opposed, but don't disclude the facts or give empty reasons in an effort to sway opinions, generally speaking.:)
