Undescended Testicles Hi. I have a 9 1/2 month old puppy and one of his testicles are undescended. The vet recommended neutering him now cause he said it will never descend. I'm worried about his recovery and if it's a good idea to neuter him now or wait. Please help. |
I had one dog that finally decended at 11 months of age. But, if the vet says its ok to neuter him now, then why wait? |
cryptorchid :D the surgery for a cryptorchid (und. testicles) is not a very long one (vet tech for many years) but longer than the common neutering. Doc has to lightly tug on the desc. testicle to find the other one. Most come through just terrific and you will never know the difference..Doc might charge you more though, longer operation and a few more stitches depending on where in the body it is. he needs to be done though roxanne |
Should I wait? I'm debating whether I want to wait a little longer to have the surgery. I've heard some puppies descend their last testicle before they're a year old. I would much rather to have the less invasive surgery on Peanut(that's my dog). Would waiting until he's older to have the surgery affect his recovery and be harder on him? Thanks for the replies! |

If it concerns you that much, then seek a second opinion. I use 3 vets, myself!:D I doubt that he'll get testicular cancer at this age so I don't see that waiting a few months longer is going to hurt him in any way. Good luck! |
Oh yeah...how much does he weigh? Sometimes, the smaller males take longer for their testicles to drop. He could just be a late bloomer. |
I WOULD SAY GO AHEAD A NEUTER HIM NOW.AT 91/2 MTHS ITS UNLIKELY IT WILL COME DOWN NOW. I WAITED WITH MY BOY AS A SMALL FEW COME DOWN BUT HE DID NOT he WAS MONORCHID(ONE TESTICLE DESCENDED) CRYPTORCHID (IS BOTH UN DESCENDED) AND LIKE ROCKBAKER SAID PRICE WILL DEPEND ON WHERE IT IS (COULD BE IN THE STOMACH -COST MORE- OR OUTSIDE THE STOMACH CAVITY AND THE VET CAN FIND IT EASIER. but read up on the side affects some experts say they can become aggressive the longer it remains because all the extra totosterone enhances all their natural tendencies. well look into it and good luck there is no immediate rush and I am sure he will be fine:) |
I went yesterday to my vet and he told me the same thing about Kobe. He has one undescended testicle and needs surgery. Kobe will be 11 months next week. They said that the surgery will cost about $400 to $500. Does that sound correct? His surgery would be a more complicated one because he said it's in his abdominal area. |
The vets that do low cost spay/neuter sometimes make these two surgeries the same price. In that case, a neuter for an undescended testicle would be the same price. Most vets charge more for a spay than a neuter because it is a more involved surgery. These vets will charge you more for this type of neuter and that price looks fine. Hopefully it includes bloodwork and and IV. They do have to go into the abdomen, so the recovery is a lot like a spay. |

There is a breeder in town that kept a male pup with 2 undescended testicles. At around a year, both testes dropped...late bloomer. |
He's 4.4 lbs. Thank you so much for the advice, everyone! I found the pet warranty from the breeder where I got Peanut so I have to talk to her about Peanut's condition. I hear undescended testicles are hereditary, is that true? |
I did hear that undescended testicle is a hereditary condition and that males with that condition shouldn't be bred. Cocoster had that surgery when he was 13 months old (now he's 18 months old) and a lil over 5 pounds. The recovery definitely takes longer than a regular neuter. It took Cocoster about a week to move around normally. He was on pain meds for 3 days. His incision shocked me when I first saw it because it was longer than I expected. :eek: It seemed like the longest week ever. I didn't feed him anything the first day, but I made sure he drank and ate a little after that. I took time off from work to stay with him during the day so I can watch him, and I made him wear an onesie overnight so he wouldn't lick his incisions. Sometimes the vet can feel where the undescended testicle is, which makes it an easier surgery. :thumbup: My vet had to "dig" for Cocoster's because it couldn't be felt from the outside. :( |
