What is the best food? Hello, I was hoping that you guys can "point" me in the right direction. Noah is my first yorkie, and my first small dog. He will be 1 in few days. When I got him, they had him on Nutro, but I feed my other dogs holistic food, and I really believe in the benifits. I began feeding Noah Eagle Pack puppy food. With his training however he has put on about 1.5 lbs. I need him to take off a pound. The vet recommended taking him off puppy food, so I have put him on the holistic fish tht Eagle Pack makes. I am not sure if yorkies have other dietary needs that I have over looked. Anyone have any advise? I have seen the Royal Canine yorkie food, would that be better for him? Thank you for looking! |
Good Morning,, and welcome to YT! we've just recently had such a discussion on foods.. I've fed our Yorkies Royal Canin for over 2 yrs and was very happy with it and how it did for them until the recent discussions here,, I went Yesterday and found a place to buy Merrick food and am going to slowly switch them over to that,, after researching further on ingredients,, I can tell you all my Yorkies LOVE it!!! they are digging it out of the mix first!! leaving the RC behind til the Merricks is all gone, plus its organic and TEXAS made!! but more healthy ingredients,,but you can go to www.dogfoodsanalysis.com and read up on LOTS of different brands and make you decision,, and search here for the recent posts concerning Merrick vs. Royal Canin, hope this helps! :aimeeyork |
Royal Canin works for some but not for other. I would not try it since you don't know yet. It causes horrible itchies. What kind of food are you looking for? Kibble Canned Homecooked Raw ??? |
I feed my dogs kibble...in this house they do not recieve lots of "treats" except when training. Noah loves carrots as a treat while home and he will train with Cheerios at home as well, however at school he will not work for either of those. So, I would like to keep him on the kibble to eat since he is working towards his CGC and will be getting liver snacks and cheese  at school. I have droned on here.......so sorry. |
Innova, Canidae, Wellness... |
from what i hear Eagle Pack is a good food... don't do Royal Canine... lately i've heard of a lot of skin issues that might or might not relate to that food. all the foods that Ellie May recommended are great.. and so is home cooking :) |
Life's Abundance ♥ If you would like to try a great kibble that is all natural and made from the best ingredients, i have free samples of the Life's Abundance. It is made in America with only trusted American ingredients...it has no corn, no wheat or soy and no by-products. My girls LOVE this food and we love the convenience of having it delivered straight to our door. :D If you would like a free sample, just pm me your address and i'll send you out a sample to try. :) Welcome to YT!! HUGS! XOXO |
I hear taht orijen is good...but on the analysis chart, it is a six star (I'm under the impression that 6 stars might be too much protein?) Does anyone reccommend the orijen 6 fresh fish vs the orijen adult (which plainly states taht it might have too much protein for puppies). Tia is half and half about her new Fromms. we'll see how it goes, and we might switch one more time. |

Yes, LA has wonderful vitamins, agility supplements and skin& coat tablets with the omega 3 fish oils. my girls get all of them but the agility and they are doing great. THe shampoo is also the best we have found for yorkie hair. :D The food samples include a little vitamin to try too. :D It is also an all life stages food so it is good for puppies, adults and seniors. The kibbles are tiny too! My girls love it!! i have the regular formula and the weight loss formula. |

What food is the "best" food depends on your dog. What is 'best' for one dog may not be 'best' for the next. Although dogfoodanalysis.com is a good site, with lots of info, it is written entirely based on the opinion of the site owner(s), not long term, extensive research. Please do not use it as your only source while researching. You may also want to check out: http://www.consumersearch.com/www/fa...d/reviews.html It will direct you to different publications and many links that examine commercial food, raw feeding, and homecooked. I would NOT recommend Royal Canine YT though--mine did not stomach it very well and there seem to be lots of people here who had problems with that one. |

She is my porkie yorkie and on the weight loss formula. She loves to eat just like her momma! :p Kissy is almost 7 years old at a tad over 8 lbs. Angel is almost 3 years old and 6 lbs. Princess is almost 2 years and 3 lbs. Candy is almost 10 months old at 2.75 lbs. Although Kissy is the only one that should be on the weight loss formula, my other girls love it too so they all eat both mixed together. |
porkie yorkie i had bean on orijen for a year she gained 2 pounds, thats a lot of weight for a six pound dog. i had heard other dogs gained weight on it too, so i have now switched her onto timberwolf organics, the black forest venison and lamb and she has lost half of a pound and she loves the food. she has a waist line now. |
Food Thanks for all of your replies. Noah is doing agility with me, and I have him on Eagle Pack fish now...he is doing well on it...and he has trimmed down and is a handsome guy...if I do say so myself!! :) |
