I have used Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpaste (beef or chicken flavor) for 5 years and my 4 & 5 year old yorkies have never lost any teeth. I have their teeth cleaned professionally, every few years. I use a little child's toothbrush. :p Most of the time I brush every other night, then sometimes every night. Maybe I have doggies with genetically good teeth. But the Vet says I do a pretty good job. :D I can't imagine brushing them twice a day! :eek:

Thinking about buying some of the 'Drs. Foster and Smith Dental Clens Pads for in between brushings.

:thumbup: I started using these pads this week and they are great! They smell really good too.

Maximo's new dental regimen (copied from another YT member):

1) brush daily with CET toothpaste
2) wipe with Dr. Foster's Dental Clens Pads
3) Himalayan chews
4) carefully scrape with a dental scaler (I cannot believe Maximo actually allows me to do this)

whoa do not scrape please as you are scraping the enamel and not polishing allowing more tartar build up - you have to polish if you scrape or you can do more harm than good so leave the scraping for dentals with non-anesthetic tech, dentist or vet

yeah sometimes you can do more damage brushing with a brush if dog is thrashing as you can damage the gums so best to do with gauze around finger, wipes or even just your finger and tooth paste in circular motion so you can get below the gum line

Thank you, I appreciate the warning. I have scraped very, very little on 2 spots where there was some plaque. What do the dentist/vets use to polish?

they have a tool to polish while under and many do not hand scrape as takes too much time they use ultrasonic to blast off tarter and keep dog under less time. Then they polish with a tool. The non-anesthetic use a sanded polish that they rub over the teeth - brushing is most important as we do not scale our own teeth so i would not do it with a dog

Went to the Vet yesterday morning for both girls (Annie & Greta) to have their teeth cleaned. Dr. sent Annie home, saying she doesn't need one this time. Greta however, was in need.

I told him I brush every other night with a child's toothbrush and Petrodex Enzymatic Toothpaste. He said I was doing a great job BUT...I don't need to brush their teeth with a toothbrush (he didn't say it would hurt anything, but just a pain in the butt to do). Instead he said to use Ora Vet Plaque Prevention Gel and rub it on once a week with my finger.

I just feel like once a week isn't enough! So I think I'll get those Dr. Foster's Pads and do those every day and then do the Ora Vet Gel once a week.

Seems like everybody does something different though.

Greta has always had sort of a bad breath problem, but Annie never does. So one time I used Baking Soda mixed with her toothpaste and it gave her the worst gas ever! She hated it! lol (mean ole' mommy)

Well, I don't know what any of it means but here's what it says on the back of the box:

"5-amino-1,3-bis(2-ethylhexy)hexahydro-5-methyl-5-pyrimidinamine(hexetidine), microcrystalline wax, mineral oil."

hmmm yeah i think this is the same stuff vet gave my dad for his dog. We see a bc dentist and he has never recommended anything but brushing - he said he does not get into all the hype about stuff just brush the teeth twice a day like us
