Why not Royal canin? I see so many threads about feeding and people saying they wouldn't feed Royal canin...just wondered why people do not seem to have a good word to say about it, I have been feeding Pixie RC (mini Junior) and she seems fine on it, healthy skin, coat and good weight for her size, her breeder feeds it too and she shows at crufts every year, her dogs certainly look fantastic on it! was just curious to know why...am i feeding a bad food?:( My Staffordshire Bull Terrier is on James Wellbeloved. |

It has been known to cause extreme itchiness in Yorkies. If you type Royal Canin in the "Search", you will see what I mean. There is way too much corn in it. It is way overpriced for a cheaply made food. |
Why would you want to feed something like RC when there are foods that are so much better? That's my question. Sure, it's better than things like Iams and Purina, but there are other foods that a lot better with a lot less fillers. Especially for the same or even less! |

what do you guys think of James Wellbeloved? not sure if you can get this in the USA or not though? |

Chachi got the itchies when he ate royal canin |
Since you live in the UK, you are probably thinking of the original Royal Canin made years ago in your country. It was excellent food, about the best you could buy before all the premium food we now have on the market came out. It was hard to find in the US, though. When Waltham bought the right to market it over here, they changed the recipe and added cheap fillers like corn. The upscale boutiques that used to carry Royal Canin stopped carrying it. It's now just an over priced mediocre quality food. You can probably still get the "real" Royal Canin over there. |

Like what Ellie May said, what works for you might not work for others. |
I have just looked at the ingredients in the RC Mini Junior, heres whats listed: Dehydrated poultry meat Rice animal fats maize gluten beet pulp Hydrolysed animal proteins poultry proteins minerals vegetable fibres yeast soya oil fish oil Fructo-oligo-saccharides (whatever that is!):p egg powder DL-methionine:confused: Taurine marigold extract Average Analysis: protein 33%- Fat 20%-ash 5.5%-fibre 2.2% what do you think? |

I think they need to name their animals and not just say "animal fats". They should do the same for their poultry. |

I too am in the UK and having problems finding a good food to feed mine, my oldest who is 11 is OK on what he eats now. BUT my younger 18 months, isn't. I am having a nightmare finding a good food. I am in the UK too, how are you getting on with finding a good food. I thought of Royal Canin until I read the ingredients I too am considering James Wellbeloved. I would be interested to know how you are getting on. Diana |
Bella ate RC until she was about 1yr. she did great on it. But everyone is right. RC vs Merrick vs Honest Kitchen!!! Hi, I'm a new poster here :) My two 5lb. Yorkies grew up eating Science Diet! Not sure if that was a good choice! They are fine, but I have to brush their teeth every day, to keep that food off them. I've been reading everything possible in this forum, to find the perfect food for 'Yorkies' ie: food good for health, food good for teeth, etc. and I'm still not sure what to do! If any of you know a food that is good for health (for Yorkies inparticular) and good for their teeth (like Royal Canin), please let me know. I want both. :D I want it all!!! ;) My two Yorkies are pretty good eaters, so I think they'll try anything. Thanks, Emmy :) & Annie :aimeeyork & Greta :aimeeyork |
I am sure you will get alot of help. In the USA you have many to choose from. We in the UK seem to have less great ones, very few good ones, and a lot that aren't quite right. I looked up the ingrediants of Royal Canin for Yorkies and in general and for me they are a NO NO (No offense to those of you who love it, and who's babies do well on it) Look at their Ingrediets for the ROYAL CANINE YORKSHIRE: Ingredients: Dehydrated poultry meat, rice, maize flour, animal fats, maize, soya protein isolate, maize gluten, poultry liver, purified cellulose, beet pulp, vegetable oils (including borage oil), yeast, fish oil, minerals,fructooligo- saccharides, trace-elements (including chelated trace-elements), sodium polyphosphate, green tea and grape extracts (source of polyphenols), DLmethionine, egg powder, hydrolysed crustaceans (source of glucosamine), hydrolysed cartilage (source of chondroitin), vitamins. I JUST CAN'T FEED MY BOYS SOME OF THOSE INGREDIENTS .. !!!!!!!! :thumbdown :thumbdown |
Diana, thanks so much for that info. :D |
I've been researching Royal Canin for a while now. That's what all of my dogs are on. However, from what I've found is that the original Royal Canin was good for them. It has changed over the years. I am trying to get everyone switched to Canidae. I'm much happier with those ingredients. We live in the boonies and have the Royal Canin delivered by a distributor. So I'm working with Canidae to get one of their reps to come through here and do the same. |

I thought there was one place, but when I looked into it, it is in the EU and the shipping is costly for us in the UK  |
Buddy was on RC when he was about 7mos old. I thought that was the perfect food for him since it was for Yorkshire Terriers. That was until I found YT! Here I learned about the ingrediants and what I saw in RC was just a bunch of fillers. He has been on Natural Balance Organic for years and has thrived on it. All human grade ingrediants. This is how we learn. |
Hi I agree the ingredients aren't good. We can't get all the USA foods in the UK but we are much more aware of ingredients once we join YT. Isn't it great we can all help each other, to care for our babies the best way we possibly can. |
