Dry, flaky skin! KaCee has dry, very flaky skin. She isn't itching, so it's not bothering her but it sure is bothering me:p Is there a really good shampoo/conditioner out there that everyone uses? I just looked through some old threads and saw someone mention that food could cause it...she is eating Science Diet small bites right now but I'm thinking about switching her to Merricks if I can find it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! |
i put salmon oil in my girls food once a day and i think it helps with their skin/ coat in the winter. I give them all year round. Maybe you should try Orijen Six fish kibbles or Natural Balance Sweet Potato and fish kibbles. They are great for allergies and skin/coat! |
If she's allergic to SD's fillers, that could be it right there.... |
My puppy is having the same flaky skin problem....my vet said it seemed like it could be yeast or fungus. He said it might even be ringworm! He did a ringworm culture and said it would take 2-3 weeks to find out if the test was positive or negative. I am beginning to think that it is just allergies to his food. He eats Chicken Soup for the Puppy Soul wet food and eats Royal Canin Indoor Puppy dry food. I am thinking about switching to Wellness or Canidae. |

I would which from SD right away, theres way to many fillers in it. Koda was on SD when he came to us, but then we whiched him to Innova Puppy Diet (which he loved, and took to it right away). She could be allergic to the fillers? You never know. |
With these tiny Yorkies it doesn't take much to home cook and it's the best and healthiest way to raise your babies. You always know what they are really eating! ;) |
now that I think of it though, I just started Jacoby on the Royal Canin about a week ago...and his skin was flaky for almost 2 weeks before that. :( Do you think it could be from the Chicken Soup food?? |
switched to Merrick I just went out and bought a bag of Merrick's Puppy Plate. Hopefully that helps with the flaky skin. We're going to the vet Tuesday morning for shots so I'll ask him about it too. |
Try Coat Handler Products for dry, flaky skin I had very similar problems described in your post except I think mine were much more advanced. My male Yorkie had large areas on his abdomen that looked like ringworm plus dry flake skin all over his body. No itching. My vet said it was a bacterial skin infection and gave him an antibotic. Antibotic did very little good so I went searching for answers. The author who wrote the book Yorkies from Head to Tail also developed the Coat Handler products. She believes that all the various shampoos and conditioners we try to make our babies look so special leave a residue on their skin that eventually results in skin problems to make a long story short. I was desperate to find an answer so I tried her products and in about 6 weeks of using 15 to 1 shampoo and conditioner once a week plus applying Skin Works cream 2-3 times a day my problems disappeared and have not reoccurred. Whenever I see an little area that looks dry or even a hot spot I immediately apply Skin Works and in a day or two it gone. I will use these products and nothing else forever. Jane |
yoshi had the same problem. i then bought some cowboy magic shine and detangler...i don't notice the flaky skin as much now. |
My little one is having the same problem, what about flaxseed oil? if I put a little on her food, would this help? I thought it was the corn in her food, but I've changed her food about two weeks ago and we just gave her a bath and now her skin is flaking. |

organic virgin coconut oil is very good too.... both on their food and on their bodies. |
I'm about to go to the vet. I'm sure he will get meds & a special shampoo. But I hope its not the food, cause we recently switched like 2-3 months ago for him having bloody stools. |
