Vivi is better thanks to this Liver/Kidney supplement Hi Everyone, It has been a really long time since i have posted. For those of you that don't know my story.....I have a 3 and a half year old yorkie named Lavinia "Vivi" who was diagnosed before her second birthday with an inoperable liver shunt which resulted in large inoperable kidney stones. My vet sent her medical files to UT to get the opinion of Dr. TObias...she was surprised that Vivi had survived her puppyhood based on the clinical reports. I have struggled to find a balanced diet that allows her to get the necessary protein without overwhelming her very under developed liver. Last Spring she almost died as a result of the kidney stones and we were given very little hope for her future. Vivi, however, was not ready to give up and neither was I. Her diet consists of organic baby food and added carrots, apples, and bananas. She loves the added texture. She gets 3cc's of lactulose 3 times a day. Last summer I was walking in the East Village in NYC and I came across a holistic pet store and went in to see if they had anything for liver ailments. I found a bottle of their private label herbal supplement for liver and kidneys and decided to try it. Vivi has never liked any other supplement and i have tried several so i didn't give this one much hope. I mixed it in her food and she ate it....in fact she gobbled it down. THat was four months ago and during that time I have seen a remarkable difference in my dog.....she has more energy than she has ever had....her eyes are bright, she is very alert....I thought I was imagining this...could my dog actually be getting better? Yesterday, I took her to my vet and he also noticed a big difference and decided to run extensive blood tests....I just got the results....her numbers are the best they have been in her entire life. She is not cured by any stretch but she has improved which means that clinically her tiny liver is working better. He and I both are astounded. I bought this stuff from Whiskers Holistic Products 235 E. 9th street, NYC,NY 10003. 1-212-979-2532. or 1-800-WHISKERS. It is called WHiskers Own Liver/Kidney Aide.It is not available online so i just reordered it over the phone. I do not work for this company or know anyone that does....nor am I being compensated in any way. I apologize for sounding like an infomercial but I have been trying to help Vivi for a long time and this is the first time the vet has ever called me with good news. My dog's condition is inoperable so this is the only thing I can do....try to keep her underdeveloped liver working to it's best ability. And finally something helped her. The product contains dandelion root, milk thistle, corn silk, marshmallow root, and cleaver's herb . It is organic. I hope that this helps other dogs suffering from liver disease.      |
That is great news, I hope she continues to improve and this is great info!! |
I too hope she continues to improve. This is great new. Thank you for the up-date and the information. |
Wow, I am so glad she is better!! This sounds like a wonderful treatment. I wonder if it could help some of the other yorkies on here with liver shunt disease. Maybe you should put a thread in the health & diet forum or the product review forum with the name of this in your title. |
wow thats wonderful! |
That's great!!! |
I hope she continues to improve, and thanks for supplying this information that will help others. |
I am so happy for you that the supplement has produced such amazing results!! Thank you so much for posting this information. I copied and pasted it on two other threads, where babies have been diagnosed with Liver Shunt. I hope your Vivi continues to improve. Hugs to the both of you, Lauren:D |
Glad the hear she is doing so well. Bummer, I was in the city Monday. I wish I had known about the place. Next time I go in I will go take a look. My babies don't have liver problems but my daughter's Cavalier has had a long bout with kennel cough and my grand daughter's French bulldog has a lot a allergies. They just might have something for either one of them. Thanks for the information. |
Hi Thanks for all of your kind words.....and also for moving this to the other threads as I wasn't sure how to do it. Some of the numbers on Vivi's bloodwork are in the normal range for the first time in her life! I have always known that these particular herbs are very helpful for the liver....the problem has been finding a way to give them to her in a form that she likes and doesn't upset her stomach. I am grateful for all the time that I have with this wonderful little dog......the vet calls her....."THe Little Dog That Could" she is a lesson to all in her steadfast determination to not give up. I sincerely hope that this will help other's suffering from Liver Shunt. All I can say is the experts could find no reason medically for her survival....her situation was that bad. She is now zooming around the house, playing with toys, eating like a little piglet, and travelling everywhere with me. She accompanies me to my studio each day and loves to visit with the other artists. She has quite the fan club!:) If anyone has a specific question, please pm me. |
I am so glad to hear Vivi is doing well! |
Wow this is a wonderful news, so glad your precious one is doing much, much better, and also glad that she have a mommy like you who cares so much for her:aimeeyork  |
It's always good to hear good news...stay well little girl...stay well. |
Wow! I pray I will never have to deal with liver shunt issues in my baby, but I know she is still young, and we could be going through this as well at some point in the future. Thank you so much for the recommendation for myself, or any others that may need this information now or anytime down the road. I'm so glad to hear your baby is doing better!!! |
Wonderful!! I have a yorkie with pretty severe MVD. Is your baby on any other meds or supplements? What food? Thanks for this info!! |
Hi! Vivi eats organic baby food from the supermarket..She likes the stage 2 vegetable/meat combos. I am careful that onions are not part of the recipe..... I have been putting 1.5--2 cc's of the herbal supplement in each small jar of baby food. I then mix in some chopped apple pieces or banana slices. She gets this twice a day. In addition I give her 3 cc's of Lactulose 3 times a day.At one point I was giving her flagyl 2x a day but I am no longer doing this. For snacks I buy baby carrots and dried sweet potatoes. I have been trying to give her as much nutrition as I can with a close eye on her protein intake. SHe is a great eater...food is one of her pleasures so for that I am lucky. Occasionally I give her cottage cheese or egg whites as they are both great sources of non animal meat protein. I hope this helps. Please feel free to ask any other questions you might have. |
that is AWSOME news! i pray for the day lacey is running around like she used to. right now we are working on getting her stable enough to take her to the surgon to find out what kind of liver shunt she has. do you think i should start her on something like that right away or wait until she is a little more stable? she is the light of my life and i want to do everything possable to amke her feel better. |
I hope Lacey is feeling better soon....I am just a dog mom and not a vet so I am uncomfortable telling you what to do; however, when i started Vivi on this supplement she was recovering from a serious bout of kidney stones as a result of her liver shunt and not in very good shape. Due to the fact that Vivi's situation is serious and inoperable I have taken the "I will try anything in moderation " approach. I was told that the worst thing this herbal supplement could do would be to cause her to have a stomach ache if given too much so I have been giving her more than the recommended dosage for her weight and she has tolerated it well. My vet has supported my holistic efforts and is behind me on the success of this. He was so happy that her numbers were better for both liver and kidney function. I began seeing small but noticable to me results after about 3 weeks....after 4 months the improvement is noticable by everyone that knows her. I hope this helps you and your baby. |
You should come onto the liver shunt group and tell them your experience... |
How do I join the Liver SHunt Group? |

What great news, I'm so happy to hear it.:) |
Vivi Hi, how exciting that this herbal supplement has improved Vivis life. Thank you so much for sharing your experience. My pups are ok but one never knows what the future holds, so I will keep a copy of this thread in case I ever need it or to refer this thread to someone who may benefit from it. Very happy for you and your baby. Annie Zander & Jazzies mom |

Thank you!! |
WOW! Isn't it something that we can spend so much on a vet and then we ourselves do something and it works? I am so very happy for you. Could you give me her systoms of the liver shunt so I can compare what is happening with Snoodles with it? The vet is not very helpful1 Pat |

Lethargy/sleeping alot, head pressing, bad breath, lack of appetite, drooling, vomiting, pacing, circling, UTIs/stones/crystals, dark urine, inability to sit still for long periods of time, drinking lots of water, staggering, listlessness, blank stare... These are all symptoms of hepatic encephalopathy...Remember, some dogs will exhibit only a few of the symptoms sometimes or maybe just ONE. |
