Suggestions needed badly
 
It seems like Sassafras has been sick so much since I got her.

She seems like she is so sensitive to everything.


She is once again having mucus and blood in her stool and vomiting every other day

She has been a "booty scooter" off and on since I got her. They have done every stool test they could think of and sent them to an outside lab and have found no worms or parasites.

She was eating Science Diet puppy kibble food, but since she is having tummy issues they changes it last Thursday to Prescription Diet i/d because it is so easy to digest.

She is still vomiting after a week on it and still has blood/mucus in her stool.
She was having bowel movements 5-6 times a day and it is now down to 2 times a day.

The vet prescribed a cream to rub on her booty 3 times a day, an antibiotic and something to help her tummy and thinks she has colitis and irritation/inflammation in her tummy.

Is this something she will just outgrow? She is 19 weeks 4 days and weighs 3 pounds.

Has anyone else gone through anything like this? How worried should I be? What should I be asking my vet to check?

I haven't gone thru that but will keep her in my prayers. I would be really afraid of dehydration. Poor sweetie.

How long have you had her?

I think I would be trying a different vet if I were you.

Oh, so sorry for your troubles. I have never experianced anything like that with my two, but I will keep you ans Sassafras in my prayers.

I got her when she was 8 weeks old on August 31, 2007.

She is the sweetest little puppy, has such a wonderful personality and is always so happy and so lovable. She is so smart and is already potty trained.

She is my first pet and I want to be sure I am asking the vet the right questions and doing the right things. I hate seeing her little body shake when she vomits and it really worries me to see the blood/mucus in her stool.

I think that might be a good idea. They made me like I was being too worried about it when I went back in Tuesday (after I was just in the previous Thursday), but I was worried because she is still having the same symptoms and doesn't seem to be getting better.

They said to give the medicine and new food more time, but it has been 7 days now and I think there should be some improvement in her symptoms now.

Many years ago, we had a very similar situation. Our vet at the time couldn't find anything either.
Yes, please take her to another vet. I wish we had before it was too late. :sad:

First I would switch her food. Ellie was on Science Diet kibble for a few years and I thought she was doing so well on it. Then when I switched her food she stopped throwing up every week or two for no reason. I never knew the two were connected. I'm not saying that that is your pup's problem but I don't think that food is doing any good... Maybe you could homecook?

If your vet is treating you like someone who is over protective, find another vet. I ask Ellie's vet questions all the time. I call her a lot. Ellie has had some strange health issues lately... I have even been told to page her if I need a question answered before she gets to her voicemail. She never treats us like we worry too much (although she does notice we do get concerned easily). If your vet is taking your concerns lightly, please move on.

I have experienced these same symptoms and it was a virus that didn't show up on any tests. Please go to your vet and get 10 days of Clavamox, give 1/2 pill in the morning & 1/2 pill at night. You should notice a difference within a few days but don't stop the clavamox until it's all gone.

In the meantime give her some pumpkin to settle the stool issue (pumpkin is the cure all regulator, it gets things moving and stops things from moving too fast). I keep real pumpkin in my freezer but if you don't (not everyone does) you can go buy a small pumpkin or a can of "un-spiced" pumpkin.

Also, pick up some of those little vanilla ice cream cups and share it with her, she gets about 1/4 and you get the rest (the things we have to do for the ;) ). This will help prevent dehydration and keep her sugar blood up.

They never knew. She was a beautiful small long haired mixed breed. She had the same symptoms as described by the OP. The vet never found any parasites or other illness. In and out of the clinic for a couple of weeks for days at a time until the final days when they had her in ICU until she passed.

We should have tried another vet, but we were young and trusting.

Layla was sick when we first got her... she was at the vet honestly once every week with either diarrhea with blood or vomiting or boot scooty. and honest to God since i have switched from crap kibble to home cooking she has been 100 percent better.... i swear by it and advocate it when i can. Now her only issues are seasonal allergies! i knwo it is so ahrd to watch your baby suffer but try changing her diet to just white rice and boiled chicken and see how she does.. that is very bland and should be easy on her tummy

I thought pumpkin was a dog laxitive. I give mine cottage cheese every day a teaspoon. I would try that or yogurt. I think you could even give her activa.

I agree with changing her food. Science Diet is loaded with corn, and a lot of dogs are allergic to corn. Sadie's Mom was having a lot of problems with her yorkie scooting her butt and she found out it was an allergy to corn. When a dog is allergic to something it eats, it can cause digestive problems and itchiness. I suggest trying a different food - a premium brand that does not have any corn. Some dogs are allergic to other grains as well and wheat so you might even want to find a grain-free food. There are allergy tests you can have done to determine if it is an allergy and exactly what she is allergic too.
