Suggestions needed badly It seems like Sassafras has been sick so much since I got her. She seems like she is so sensitive to everything. She is once again having mucus and blood in her stool and vomiting every other day She has been a "booty scooter" off and on since I got her. They have done every stool test they could think of and sent them to an outside lab and have found no worms or parasites. She was eating Science Diet puppy kibble food, but since she is having tummy issues they changes it last Thursday to Prescription Diet i/d because it is so easy to digest. She is still vomiting after a week on it and still has blood/mucus in her stool. She was having bowel movements 5-6 times a day and it is now down to 2 times a day. The vet prescribed a cream to rub on her booty 3 times a day, an antibiotic and something to help her tummy and thinks she has colitis and irritation/inflammation in her tummy. Is this something she will just outgrow? She is 19 weeks 4 days and weighs 3 pounds. Has anyone else gone through anything like this? How worried should I be? What should I be asking my vet to check? |
I haven't gone thru that but will keep her in my prayers. I would be really afraid of dehydration. Poor sweetie. |
How long have you had her? I think I would be trying a different vet if I were you. |
Oh, so sorry for your troubles. I have never experianced anything like that with my two, but I will keep you ans Sassafras in my prayers. |
I got her when she was 8 weeks old on August 31, 2007. She is the sweetest little puppy, has such a wonderful personality and is always so happy and so lovable. She is so smart and is already potty trained. She is my first pet and I want to be sure I am asking the vet the right questions and doing the right things. I hate seeing her little body shake when she vomits and it really worries me to see the blood/mucus in her stool. |

They said to give the medicine and new food more time, but it has been 7 days now and I think there should be some improvement in her symptoms now. |
Many years ago, we had a very similar situation. Our vet at the time couldn't find anything either. Yes, please take her to another vet. I wish we had before it was too late. |

First I would switch her food. Ellie was on Science Diet kibble for a few years and I thought she was doing so well on it. Then when I switched her food she stopped throwing up every week or two for no reason. I never knew the two were connected. I'm not saying that that is your pup's problem but I don't think that food is doing any good... Maybe you could homecook? If your vet is treating you like someone who is over protective, find another vet. I ask Ellie's vet questions all the time. I call her a lot. Ellie has had some strange health issues lately... I have even been told to page her if I need a question answered before she gets to her voicemail. She never treats us like we worry too much (although she does notice we do get concerned easily). If your vet is taking your concerns lightly, please move on. |

In the meantime give her some pumpkin to settle the stool issue (pumpkin is the cure all regulator, it gets things moving and stops things from moving too fast). I keep real pumpkin in my freezer but if you don't (not everyone does) you can go buy a small pumpkin or a can of "un-spiced" pumpkin. Also, pick up some of those little vanilla ice cream cups and share it with her, she gets about 1/4 and you get the rest (the things we have to do for the ;) ). This will help prevent dehydration and keep her sugar blood up. Alana |

We should have tried another vet, but we were young and trusting. |

Thanks! :animal36 |
Layla was sick when we first got her... she was at the vet honestly once every week with either diarrhea with blood or vomiting or boot scooty. and honest to God since i have switched from crap kibble to home cooking she has been 100 percent better.... i swear by it and advocate it when i can. Now her only issues are seasonal allergies! i knwo it is so ahrd to watch your baby suffer but try changing her diet to just white rice and boiled chicken and see how she does.. that is very bland and should be easy on her tummy |
I thought pumpkin was a dog laxitive. I give mine cottage cheese every day a teaspoon. I would try that or yogurt. I think you could even give her activa. |

I am going in this morning @ 9 and seeing a different doctor at the center (they have 3). Sass didn't keep down any food yesterday. Thanks for all of your suggestions. I hope she starts feeling better soon, so I can get some sleep and stop worrying so much. |
I hope you can find satisfaction at your new doctor, let us know what happens. I agree with other posters that it sounds like she may have sensitivities to something in the food. The clavamox and pumpkin suggestion is also a good one. As the other poster mentioned. pumpkin pulp is a great regulator, it acts as a laxative AND as help for idiopathic diarrhea. I might also suggest a deworming.. I know the vet said no parasites were found, but it wouldn't hurt to deworm anyhow (unless of course, you've already done so.) As I final suggestion, the "scooting" makes me wonder if your pup is having trouble with her anal glands. It's not very likely at her age, but again, it's at least worth the question. Wishing you good luck in getting her more comfortable.:) |
prayers for Sassafrass and that a knowledgeable vet may help or a change in feeding. |

They said in such a young pup they don't usually have trouble with their anal glands, but went ahead and cleaned them 3 different times now because of the scooting. They seem confused about what is wrong with her. If today doesn't go well I will be looking for a new vet when I get home. |
I'm so sorry to hear you poor baby is sick. There is lots of great advice already given, so I'll won't reiterate what they said. You might want to put her on Pedialyte so she doesn't get dehydrated. When they have tummy problems, it doesn't take much for a puppy to get dehydrated quickly. Most love the taste (orange seems to taste best), so it's easy to give them. Hope you find answers soon even if it means finding a new vet. |
The vet did blood work and said it didn't show her any red flags, but it did show some inflammation. Now she wants to feed her and see how long it takes her to vomit, do an abdomen x-ray and a bile test, so I will know more this afternoon. |
Blood work can show inflammation? Of what? Blood???? Sorry, I've never heard that before, but that's not to say I've heard it all. I'm still hoping that whatever it is, they find it soon. And thanks for considering another clinic. |
I think she said the white blood cells were elevated? She thought the inflammation might be nothing more than her not feeling good from the vomiting/diarrhea. She also mentioned lymph something - not sure the word. I really didn't understand a lot of what she said other than there were no red flags to show something really wrong because that sounds like good news. I'm still hoping she just has a super sensitive tummy and a new diet will fix the problem. |

An elevated white blood count indicates an infection. Of course, infections can cause inflammation, but elevated white blood counts do not indicate inflammation. Inflammation is too generic to indicate anything because it accompanies most illnesses. Of course, you already knew she was not feeling good from the vomiting/diarrhea. Lymph something! If she mentioned lymph nodes, then she probably mentioned they felt swollen. This would also indicate an infection (best) or cancer (worst, but HIGHLY unlikely). Lastly, because you didn't understand a lot of what she was saying tells me she's talking over your head and/or not taking the time to fully explain things. This would be another reason to find another clinic. |
Prayers coming your way. Make sure she gets lots to drink, and try giving some nutrical. |

I'm just really have a strong feeling that your dog is severly allergic to something in the food you are feeding. I would have an allergy test done. |
We are praying for your pumpkin!!! Parker sends his licks!!!:animal36 |

Here a website for you to read on food allergies: http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=143 |
We brought her home from the vet and about 2 hours later she vomited again. She is now at the pet hospital for the night and possibly until Monday. The doctor at the hospital said she might be able to come home Sunday if she will keep down food for 12 hours. She is dehydrated, so they are giving her fluids. He thinks we need to change the food and thinks it is just an allergy too. |
