Mango is sick-please help!!!

Excellent idea!! Thank you. I will most definitely insist on the same test being run next week, hopefully when she is completely back to normal. I think that is the only way to get definitive results on her normal levels, when there are no symptoms presenting themselves that would otherwise affect the test levels.

Lauren I just found this. I hope little Mango is feeling better! I know you must be worried. I can't add much to all the good info here, except I do know that there are certain levels that will rise above normal when an animal is nervous/ distressed (like being at the vet ), I think it is a good idea to have bloodwork repeated later after she is doing well, and get a truer picture of what may or may not be going on.
Hopefully she just had a bad day. I am sending warm healing thoughts for Mango and a hug for her mommy.

I just got off the phone with the Vet. He seemed far more concerned with the Amylase levels than the Glucose. He wants to test her again on Monday and compare results.
It is definitely Pancreatitis (so far), but I just wish I knew for sure what is causing it. If it's as simple as something she ate, then that would make me so happy; it's the not knowing that is driving me nuts.
Mango has been sleeping now for so long. Usually, this time of the day, she is doing zoomies around the family room, yapping at me to play with her. I look at that sweet defenseless little face while she is curled up, and I just want to take whatever is making her sick and put it in me instead.

I did not think of that- thank you!! Mango gets very, very distressed when she goes to the Vet. I wonder if that could account at least for the elevated sugar levels, seeing as they were not as out of whack as the AMY results?

Well, I just fed Mango a small amount of food - the Vet said he wanted her on Canine a/d for the next few days. Normally after dinner is her "zoomies" period. She is just lying on my lap, showing no interest in her toys. So I guess it's now just a "wait and see" if she keeps her food down. I have given her a few drops of the prescribed anti-nausea medication as well.

Hi Sheilagh,
Nothing encouraging yet. She started dry heaving about an hour ago, but nothing is coming out of her. Her beard is damp, but I see nothing on the floor. I am not used to seeing Mango like this, with no energy, just looking "sad" and kind of dragging herself around, like she has just no energy at all.She's known around here as "demented Mango" because of her boundless mischievousness and never ending "puppy syndrome" behavior. Not tonight. I will stay up with her quite a bit longer,(it's about 10 PM California time) and she will sleep right next to me. I am a very light sleeper and will hear any sounds she makes.

Yes, AMY levels would go along w/ sugars. Like, if you put a piece of candy (or any sugar/carb) in your mouth, the pancreas is stimulated to release amylase to begin sugar/glucose digestion - so they are intimately tied together. It could be just from her system being thrown into vomiting - as in, perhaps she was so dehydrated that her blood became "concentrated" rather than "dilute" - so her sugars are "up". But I can't say for sure - it's so hard to know. It would be nice if they tested again to see how the level is now and then again after eating (so, fasting and eating) - have they done that?

Try not to worry too much, hun, but I know how hard that is! It could really just be an isolated, but scary, incident. Keep us posted!!!! HUGS!

Anne, I can't believe I missed your post above! Thank you for that useful information. I swear you should be a nutritionist with all the knowledge you have! I am hoping what you said is the case with Mango. She was vomiting SO much, perhaps that is what caused the elevated Glucose and Amylase levels. The Vet will test her on Monday again and I will be asking about the fasting/eating.

Mango seems far more energetic this morning and slept through the night...... not so the case with her Mama. I kept waking up and shining a torch around her to see if she had vomited again. YIPPEE! no vomit and this moring she seems so much more perky than last night.

what was the shot the vet gave her? Keno had an episode like this Saturday
and the vet gave her a Cerenia shot and tablets for me to give her as needed ...
I was just wondering if it was the same medicine .... it worked ...

Mango's shot was Reglan and the Vet gave me some drops to take home. It seemed to work, although she did do some dry heaving last night. This morning, no vomiting, thank goodness!
