I need help with matts, please I can not get molly matts out, I have tryed everything, even the cowboy magic wont help,Ive tryed doing it wet and dry, after using a detangler, i mean i have done everything possiable, she is so matted close to her skin, i just cant get them out without hurting her, i knew she going to have that cotton coat right away but usually i can get them out, looking for suggestions please:( i dont want to have to shave her, she is only 4mths, thanks all. |
You might want to get a dematting comb |
When that happened to Cali after her spay, I took her to a trusted groomer to get the mats out and still keep her coat long. |

I would suggest hitting the groomer and letting them cut him down. If he is 4 months that is just the puppy coat changing. It's going to be a while to get that coat matt free and keep it that way. |
This is where i got mine http://www.arcatapet.com/item.cfm?cat=4512 It saved me from getting Jewels shaved once |
i had no choice but to shave lexi at 4 months. i didnt want to hurt her. those matts didnt come out either... the hairs grows quite fast, and its summertime.... |
i take a small pair of scissors and when i come up on a matt i slide the scissors through the matt and brush it out - works great as i tried the dematting stuff but this quick and easy and does not hurt them . |

Using the dematting comb doesnt hurt if you do it right. You take two fingers and put them around the hair right before the matt toward the skin. You then take the dematting comb through the matt. You will pull the comb through the matt only and you wont be pulling on skin which hurts. When I did Jewels like this she didnt yelp once |
Sounds like the comb works pretty well if you do it right. I'll have to try it. |
On my post above I said something incorrectly. You dont pull the comb through the matt. You pull the matt through the comb. That way you arent pulling on skin at all |
I feel ya I'm having the same issues with my baby boy Nico. He loves to always lay down  , so as soon as I finish combing him out...his hair ends up getting really matted in his belly area. I'm taking both my pups to the groomer today, and I am sure they will have to shave his belly area. I actually dont mind. It's pretty warm now, so his hair will grow back in time for the winter. He also is a cotton coat. I actually really love it that way. My Lexi is silky, so I really dont have any issues with her, she can just look kinda shaggy/stringy if i dont brush her. I just think that getting him cut down will be best, this way I can start fresh and make sure I comb him out more often (twice a day probably!) :p |
At the dog show this past week-end a lady showing a little Ch. Yorkies gave me some great infor on grooming and all. One thing she said to get mats out was to use the cowboy magic detangler shine and then with a knitting needle, work the knot out loosely then brush out with a slicker brush. To keep the knots from getting that bad, you will need to brush and comb the dog once or twice a day, and make sure you use a good conditioner (She uses Matrix 2 Sleek.Look Smoothing System conditioner) but before you do brush, mist the coat (wet or dry coat) with Crown Royal. Also make sure you use a good conditioner. |
I have the dematting comb to and that did not work either, i think im going to have to take her to my groomer, i even tryed putting cm on the matt then using the comb, ahhhh so fusterating, thanks for all the suggestion guys:) i have never seen puppy coat matt this bad, all my other furkids i can get out my self:) just hers is so close to the skin, dont want to hurt her:( |

Once you get a section mat free brush it briefly every day to keep it that way, then the next bath do another little section. Good luck! |

The Le Pooch brush is good for getting out mats. Quote:

I use Buddy Splash from Cloud Star to soften the matts and help with detangling. It's filled with natural herbs & oils - so I don't know if this is what makes such a big difference in getting the brush or comb through the matts. All I can say is it works! And I wish I had found it sooner - because 2 years ago Bubba was matted so bad, I ended up cutting so much of his undercoat out and his hair has never grown back as beautiful as it was before  His coat is still beautiful, just not as thick. :aimeeyork :) yorkiesmiles |
Grooming nightmare I am right there with you on this one. My little girl is 14 weeks old and hates to be combed, brushed etc. She is getting mats and I am clueless. I have used J&J detangler as per some other Yorkie Forum participants but no luck. I have used scissors to clip through the mats to loosen the hair but still not working. At 14 weeks old will her hair change soon? Will the mats grow out as her new hair comes in? I welcome any advice from veteran Yorkie owners. She is my first, I have always had labs. And how long does this nipping thing last? |

My lucy had really bad mats like that too and I took her to the groomers' and they just practically shaved her, well not really but her hair is really short, no more puppy hair :( but it needed to be done, because I want her to enjoy being groomed not afraid of it like my dog Max so i'm sad her puppy coat is gone but it will grow back eventually, i'm sure. |

Glad to see it works for you too! Cloud Star doesn't do much in promoting how good a detangler it is. I just recommend this to someone else on another thread a week or so ago and they were going to order it. I hope they have great results too. |
Well i have decided to take molly in, tommarow morning, I just cant stand all these matts and i think they bother her to, I will just have to start over and keep it up better, all the advise and product info was very helpful, thanks all, will update after we get home, my appt is for 6am:rolleyes: |

Where can I buy the Buddy Splash (and who sells it for the most reasonable price)? Tammy |
I buy at my vet's office, but you can go to www.cloudstar.com to order it. I just checked it's $5.95 online - which is cheaper than my vet! But I didn't check shipping cost. That's for 4 oz - which I find lasts a long time, because you just need a squirt on each mat usually. I spray the hair in one area and then brush. Then when I see another mat, spray in that area. The best part of the Buddy Splash it is made with natural herbs & oils. And it is great between baths because it smells so good and makes the coat look great. I also use the Cloud Star shampoo - haven't tried the conditioner yet. Also the dogs love their natural biscuits & treats :aimeeyork :) yorkiesmiles |
I use B&B conditioner on cody. It's for (how to say this politically correct) black peoples curly hair (sorry if I offend). I use it when I bathe him and when he gets matts i use mink oil spray. |
