Does He Have A Silk Coat???? I have asked the question before on this forum but left more confused:confused: .I want to know if a yorkie catches leather ear is that proof that they have a silk coat? OR can a modified coat develop leather ear also?I also thought I read that it is not contagious so what gives:rolleyes: ?the little girl I rescued has it now my pup looks like he has it around the ear edges and his ears are cold. Its not exactly hot here in mich.but its not cold either and he always goes out with clothing on. IF anyone can help shed some light on this for me it will be greatly appreciated. |
What in the heck is leather ear???? Sorry, you are so confusing me....LOL:D |

Leather ear, yorkie crud, or black ear.....whatever you wish to call it, most likely obtained by silk coated dogs that are more prone to the cold. Any documentation written about it says that it isn't contagious, but speaking to a few people that have had the unfortunate problem have found that it is....all equipment, brushes, combs, etc should be washed before using it on each dog. Dogs living in colder climate are more prone to it. But, humidity can be a contributing factor. Did you visit vassarsquare.com or shooter website has some information on it |
Omg! yes I have visited shooter's web page before I got my pup and it was not supposed to be contagious.I have given my pup this leather ear from the older dog I rescued.:( I am using the lotromin and alcohol not seeing any results.I have been using it for about two weeks.Does anyone know of other ways to treat it? and does that mean my pup has a silky coat?or modified?this is so frustrating I don't know what to do really. and the vet are unbelieveable here I have taken her to four vets and never went back for various reasons and not a one could tell me any thing about leather ear or how to treat it. one said she was just old, another said she never heard of it,and the other two said evaded my question and in the bustle of getting her meds I forgot to ask AGAIN!!!!! PLEASE HELP anyone with knowledge about this problem,my girl fungus? has spread from her ears to her nose to her tail to her legs all four and her eye rims.I NEED YOUR HELP. I can't let my boy go through this  :cry8: :crying: |
Lotrimin 2% and keeping in clean and dry applying alcohol. It should take care of it. The other thing I've heard of being used is the medication for ring worm is effective. Yes, the silk coats are more prone to contracting this. I don't see where you've provided a pic of your pup to evaluate the coat. |

The treatment will take more than 2 weeks and should be done about 3 times a day. |
Mardelin! thank you again for answering my questions.I have posted pics of my yorkies.they are in the pic gallery and posted on my yorkie pictures section.they are not very good quality as I am new to this and I don't know how to make them better.I am still waiting on my camera so I am using my web cam to take pics.I will try to post here again. |
You learn something new every day on this site. I have never heard the term "Leather Ear". I hope it's not painful and that your little guy will get better real soon. Best wishes to you. |

Thank You! I hear it affects silk coated yorkies. she had it when I got her loooooong story.but i thought he was a modified coat and now he has it which I thought only silks get so that must mean he has a silk coat???? so confused but I am happy and lucky to have found yt with all the wonderful and knowledgeable breeders here. someone will help me soon. vets are stumped and so are the groomers.what's a girl to do:cool: |
Silk coated. The one on the far left looks like a little coarser silk. |
thanks MARDELIN! you ROCK! ;) I will continue to use the lotromin and alcohol.but as for their coats how do I care for them? like what kind of products and comb and brush for each coat type, because I have wrecked him not knowing what coat he had.:thumbup:P>S> what is the difference in silk and course silk does it make it hard for her hair to grow?will it not ever be long? |
Some one told me you could also use head n' shoulders shampoo or tree tea oil too will clear it up. But you must use it 3 times a day for at least two weeks. T. |
He is a silk coat for sure, He will get to be a beautiful boy. just keep up the good work, his coat will be a breeze to care for. Good luck and be proud of your babies they are beautiful |
Feeling Much Better thank you TOPKNOT;) ! and YORKIELUVINMOMMA:p ! I was really afraid I would not be able to help her.her leather ear fungus had gone so long without treatment its all over her.I am just happy I can do something for her.:) I do have two more questions- #1 can I use the alcohol and lotromin around her eyes as they are affected too and #2 can I get it in my hair seems my scalp is itching more lately? |

No alcohol around the eyes, be careful with the lotromin. Don't know about you scalp itching. Maybe you need to ask your doctor. |
I just went through this w/ my baby !!!!! Hang in there it takes along time. I do believe I medicated her ears for at least 3 months. At first I thought it was so cute how she was getting a black rim on her ears, never thought it was anything. Then her ears started breaking off and the ear hair on the rims was coming off in bunches !!!!! I was really scared something was seriously wrong....but I found out through a website that this is leather ear, black ear. Note there is only one site that I could find on this. So I started calling vets to find out about it, I must of called at least 15 vets and not one knew anything about it......duh !!!!!!! These are our professionals treating our dogs !!!!! Well anyhow the website said that it is from the cold and it only affect silky yorkies. It said to use lotrimin and tea tree oil and alcohol. So I started cleaning her ears every am w/ alcohol then putting tea tree oil on the rims, and at night I smothered her ears in lotrimin. It started clearing slowly, but it takes along time and alot of persistence. I also read to leave the hair on the ears to keep them warmer. My baby had her ears shaved and now I am leaving her hair grow. I BELIEVE SHE GOT THIS AT THE GROOMERS......I do believe it is contagious and now I do all the grooming myself. got myself clippers and a video. It is very easy. Who knows what kind of germs, bacteria, viruses there are in there when they go to a place where thousands of dogs go. Well good luck, if you need anymore advice...let me know....persistence is the key.......... God Bless |
OK! and thank you all again.I will get some tea tree oil and try it also. I am here for the long run as long as I can add to the quality of her life. she deserves it and I am blessed to have the opportunity to have them both.I will keep you guys updated. |
Omg!!! Those pics of the silky coat lil one scares me!:eek:Does that one have more than leather ear because that one looks sick or something. The other one is soooooo cute! |

I think your awesome for giving her a wonderful home and taking care of her and bringing her back to a healthy life!!! :bravo: :good job: Its too bad she had to wait this long before finding a loving caring person to take care of her and that breeder should not have dogs if thats the way she treats them!!! I think she looks wonderful......keep doing what your doing!!!! Great job !!! |
