Help Help !! Nessa has soooo many knots and tangles in her hair the vet told me i should shave her hair its so bad :eek: .... i feel sooo bad because i dont want to shave her, so i decided to try and give her a bath and try and brush the knots out myself, well....it was HORRIBLE:eek: , she hated every second of it,she screamed and yelped and whined the whole time it broke my heart:(, she didnt like the brush, i have bought many many brushes and combs that were reccomended to me and None of them change her reaction, and then i just feel so bad i just give up ...i dont know what to do, last time we tried will and i had to do it together because she was so difficult and she would try and bite us and i just felt so bad putting her through that .....i dont know what to do, should i shave her ?? i thought about taking her to our groomers But im just so over protective of her, i dont know if i want to do that ....should i try again and keep trying to brush through ...?? any advice or tips would be great ..Thank you sooo much |
You might try bathing & a lot of conditioner, leave the conditioner on & pick-not comb, you remember those perm days. My girls hair tangles easy so I use a pick & it still takes time but works better & doesnt hurt so much. Then rinse & brush as you dry. Its definately a 2 person job. |
Our Toto was about Nessa's age when we brought her home and one of the first things I did was begin brushing her. I held her almost all the time anyway, so I took advantage of all that lap time by rubbing her all over, expecially her little feet. I kept a brush handy at all times and when she was very relaxed, I would take the brush and gently brush her, whether the brush was actually "brushing" or not. It got her accustomed to the brush and she began to expect it. It's very difficult, especially with a cottony coat like Toto's, to get out every single mat but certainly worth the effort. She is 3 1/2 yrs. now and sits very still while I groom her .... even lays on her little back and holds her little legs very still while I brush, get mats out, clip nails, etc. I realize that all these little one's are different and Nessa may never let you brush her, but just wanted to tell you how I handled the "battle of the brush"!!! ;) |

Aubrey - order the Shea Pet shampoo, conditioner and spray from sassypup. What a huge difference in just combing out simple mats. Shipping was really quick also - I got it in two days. Use the spray daily and start combing her gently every day. She will put up a fuss till she gets used to it. Try to distract her with a chew toy or something else to gnaw on. Hope this helps..... |
cowboy magic works but if it that bad forget about it, I used it on Grayson and it worked wonders on the little matts, but the big ones it just hurt him. When he came home to us he had matts already on his sides and legs, We ended up shaving him down all the way and just started over, his new coat came in a whole new color, and he is so silky. I am glad I did it, though he looked funny at first (like a little deer)lol I know those matts don't hurt him anymore. I was told the more you bathe them the more that matt will grow too. I just went through this with Jewels. She had alot of very bad matts and I thought I was going to have to get her shaved. I bought a dematting comb. I deep conditioned using pantene and 3 minute miracle then I let her dry then took the dematting comb to her. I got all the matts out and she wont have to be shaved. I was so happy |
I completely understand what you are going through, Chloe's hair is always a mess. Its so cottony that she gets matts on a daily basis! She will let me brush her but when it comes to the matts, you might as well forget them, I sometimes just cut them out. LOL! Its not as bad as it sounds. If I were you I would take her to the groomer and see what they can do. Its not that bad really. She will be fine, and she will look really nice afterwards. |
I've heard that Johnson's has a spray for kids that loosens the knots to where you can just brush right thru them. |

One thing about yorkies... They're cute with long hair and they are just as cute with short hair. I wouldn't sweat it... get her cut and then start combing every day so it doesn't happen again. Use some of the products everyone is mentioned to help maintain it.... (They really are adorable with short hair!!!!) |
I had to have Luna's hair cut very short for the same reason, Aubrey. The groomer gave me the best advice. Brush her EVERY single day. Never skip a day. If it was me, I'd get her cut/shaved very short and start over, hard as it is to see your baby half nakey and shivering:laugh: It'll grow back so much silkier anyway. Luna's did. Plus we got the Cowboy Magic, and it IS magic. I even skip a day or two on the brushing now and have no problems. No problem after wearing clothes either;) She's darling whether she's bald or has long hair:love: |

I dont know why , But I must be a Lucky one cause I have never had problems with matted hair on my Yorkies, They get a tangle here and there but I could go days with out brushing and have when I had the flu and they never got matted. and I dont use any fancy shampoos on them . |

Try Miracle Coat.. I got it at Pet Supply Plus.. it's a mist comes in a black bottle about $13 I think.. that stuff works great! I give Kayah her bath (use lots of conditioner) I kinda finger comb the hair while the conditioner penetrates.. then towel dry her and spray her all over (with special attention under the pawpits and butt area).. It's says to let dry.. but I let her run around for about 5 minutes.. then brush her.. and let her air dry. I'm telling you.. this stuff smells bad.. but it work like a miracle |

I know what your going through. My first yorkie let me do anything. But has a unique coat, I can take flea comb and comb with no knots and is very silky. My female is so fine she mats terribly so I got human detangler to comb her. This works great. She is 5 months I am still breaking her in, she hates the comb and tries to bite it. It just takes time and repetion. You need to start combing at the ends and work up to the root. They have hair just like us and should be treated like human hair. Known fact yorkies don't shed, one layer of hair unlike other dogs with multiple, thats why they get cold and shiver. Just think about your own hair products and apply to your baby and you'll be fine. Tinksmomok |

Hi I did have the same problem with Aiko when I left for vacation back in philippines and left my poor baby with her papa.lol.when I came back my poor baby had her hair all matt.I was so dissappointed with my husband,ofcouse,for telling me everytime he calls overseas that he brusher her hair daily.(mens little lies lol) so anyway,I tried a little trick,which i dont know if itll work on yours,but i did pour some baby oil on the matt and tried untangling them slowly by my hands and them brushed it soflty till its free from matt.(bathe her after)those hard ones didnt do any good so i just cut them my self,especially under the body,armpit? and in their behinds and legs.It wont show that much since their hair is long and will be covered by the rest of their hair.plus after,I took her to the groomer and just had her hair cut or fixed a little bit so ill look nice.(dont let them shave it)trust me,your yorkie will be fine.if it still wont work,just ask your groomer whats best for her hair.;) :thumbup: :D |

I always take a fine tooth comb and after I put the conditioner on her I will gently comb her while the conditioner is soaking on her. this makes combing after the bath much easier. Good luck, I hope baby Nessa starts to get better with her grooming. |
If, after all, you see you still can't comb through, and your baby is hurting, sometimes it's better to have a nice trim and start fresh... That's what I had to do, Pepper used to have a very frizzy cottony and fluffy coat, think cotton candy texture.... I couldn't work the mats out, it brought me to tears a few times, and he hated it too. Decided to have him cut short (really short, they had to shave his belly :eek: ) and combed his hair every single day. Well, now he's not matting anymore, his hair is fine and silky but he still hates brushing. Some dogs, I guess, never grow to like it. Oh, and I tries Cowboy Magic, Johnson'N'Johnson detangler, puppy detangler, conditioners, nothing went throught those mats..... |
I use Cowboy Magic too, and swear by that stuff! I've never seen a tangle, I couldn't get out with it. No way will I ever run out of that stuff! I also brush both my babies once a day, while the news is on. When they see Katie.....they know its grooming time! |
OK i have done it ..... i dropped nessa off this morning to get groomed by the only grooming salon i trust to do my boys too . Im so nervous i cant help it . I have already called several times to check on Her ... LOL .. they must think im Nuts LMAO !! Has anyone been this nervous dropping off there furbaby for the First grooming ?? |
i'm still a nervous wreck because i know it isn't her favoirte place to be! however.. Layla got :shaved: the last time we went and i cried when i first saw it (it was my mom's fault not the groomers) but now i think she looks SO cute... can't wait to see pictures!!! |

Awww, Nessa will look so cute, Aub:love: It might be weird at first,but it'll grow on you (and her hair will grow back;) ) Luna had the same issue and I had to let a pro help me out. Now the girls go once a month, and get brushed every night during the 10 o'clock news:laugh: Can't wait to see her!!!! |
This happened to me, too. I was brushing her everyday, but using a boar bristle brush and it did not get underneath next to the skin. I really did not know much about yorkies at the time, we have a lab and thats all I knew about. When I took her to the groomers(I waited until all her shots were finished) she was matted so badly that she was crying when she was brushing her and trying to get the knots out. She had to be shaved. I almost cried to see that little body, I did not know that she was so small and fragile. It was extreme at first, but in a month or two it looked like a puppy cut. We ended up liking the short hair on her and we keep her in a puppy cut all the time. But it was sad to lose that puppy coat so early. |
well she is home safe and sound :) They did cut alot of her hair around her face, they said it was just so bad, but they didnt shave her completley, its looks a little like a puppy cut, i was sad when i saw all her hair around her legs and face all gone and cut . But i know it will grow back soon, and i will try and brush it and keep it up so next grooming they wont take so much hair off . But she is still my beautiful little baby girl :) I will post pics soon :) (( Hugs )) |
