Question about cotton vs. silk coat Luna's only 12 weeks old, but I think she might end up with the cotton coat, poor kiddo! Her fur matts SO easily, but I found some Cowboy Magic at our local horse store, so that should help. My question is, how can you tell if the coat will be silky or cotton? Does what they have as a puppy indicate their adult coat? TIA:) Tracy and Luna:rose: |
Hi there! I have one of each...I would say yes...if her coat is cottony now it will be when she is an adult...Sadie had a silky coat as a puppy and it still is silky...Lillie is only 5 months old and her coat is very soft and matts easily...I used cowboy magic on her....for the most part it worked but,,,,she HATES to get brushed so getting the matts out isn't easy...she matts where her adult coat meets her puppy coat...if she would only sit still!!! Little Bugger!! |
Yeah, this one hates the brush and comb too, but too bad for her:D She's getting better at it, so I'm hoping that with the CM making things easier, she'll know it'll be over fast. Thanks!:) |
I only have my girls to judge but Cottony has way more volume even young - When Chanel was little - she had really long hair by a little over a year old - and as a puppy - had a little fluffy teddy bear face ....I knew she was going to have a pretty soft coat and she does. It's more work & soft coats tend to grow quicker I think - with good products and daily care ...it's worth the trouble, cause when it's in good shape - its SO soft and fun to bury your face in. |
Take him into a dark room and shine a light in his eyes, or take a picture and see if they glow green or red. If they glow green it's a silk coat. |

Lillie isn't bad with brushing on her back and head but, it's when I have to go under...on her britches, under front legs, chest and bellie....not a good thing...she bites the brush...I think it kinda funny but I dont' laugh...I just keep telling her shes a good girl....as she's fighting me every bit of the way! |

that is the CUTEST AGE ....they kind of lose that real young puppy look - don't have the adult hair yet - but don't have the dark black hair either - it's like getting a surprise every few months they change so fast the first year - |

Thanks:D! |
My pup, when I got him at 2 months, had a lot of coat... Thick and fluffy, seemed tangled all the time, also very soft some places - paws and chest ie, and matted terribly. Now he's almost 5.5 months and his adult coat has been growig in quickly but, luckily, is sooo much different from his puppy frizz. It did lose a lot of volume, stayed soft and fine but has a silk sheen to it already and, if brushed daily, matt free. So, I say, there's hope! Pepper's fur at 2-3 months and now is like night and day, he needed a haircut at little over 3 months thou, sometimes it's best to start with a short hair - it's not worth to hang on to long coat, esp with a matted puppy.... good luck :) |
If there is a curl or wave to a 12 week old pup, then it's safe to say the pup will have a cotton coat. Eye shine is also a way to tell. Puppy hair has a different texture than adult hair and could just be pup's hair is unmanagable. Give it some time. |

1 Attachment(s) I think you may still have a silk coat. I was almost sure Abbie would be cottony, because her coat matted so easily as a pup. I ran out and got all sorts of product to make grooming easier. Now, it sits in my closet, as I don't need it! I think I was sure at 6 months, when I noticed it was getting less thick, and much more easily brushed. Then, I also asked (here) about the odd green in her eyes (shown here at nine months). I couldn't 'correct' it with my image editor. LOL She looks like an alien dog: ("I am from the planet Yorkthon. Give me all your empty water bottles!") Someone said that the green reflection is an indication of silk coat. Though the natural sheen is lovely, her coat is very fine, and does grow quite slowly. At 11 months, it's about an inch from the floor. And, it's very hard to keep a bow in her topknot! The hair on her head is long - covers her face (lol), if left to fall free - but, it's so fine it crawls out of everything! I have no problems with grooming, since she doesn't matt at all. She revels in 'primping', and often comes back for more when I've told her she's "done", as if to say: "ummmmmm.....I think you missed a spot, mom" ;) |
here's Luna's eyeshine pic:) 1 Attachment(s) Looks green to me, whaddya think? |

Sofia's eyes glow green, blue, and yellow at times. Maybe it's the lighting. Mostly they are blue and I heard it means her eyes are still baby eyes and you can't tell yet. Right? |
1 Attachment(s) Here's Miss Abby without her Alien Eyes - funny ...I fix other peoples pictures and never my girls - you should see some of Chanels when she was 9 months old - YOW - talk about scary - here's glow gold now but used to glow red - and she has a coat very similar to Abbie - just as long and as thick - she's a cutie !! |
4 Attachment(s) see im confused.. max's hair looks alot like lunas.. i thought it was cotton.. kinda has a wave too it, but its very soft, and i've never had a hard time brushing him. his eyes glow green though in pics.. ::: sigh::: im confused ROFL i dont care either way, but it is interesting info to know. here are a few diff pics of max.. maybe someone can give me some insight as well. course he is still really young, so maybe it is hard to tell. |

I have one silk and one cotton coat, and the green/red eye indicators work in my case! It does sounds like a bunch of hoo-ha, but I've never heard of it NOT working! I wonder what the physiological reasons behind this are?! Interesting about the yellow for redlegs??? I'm gonna guess Luna will be silk, and is just trying to grow out of her puppy coat. It's a weird period! |

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. I woulnd't love her any less if she was cotton coated, but I am not looking forward to the nightly torture session (brush, comb) that a cotton coat can be. Thank God that everyone told me about the Cowboy Magic, it really is great! |

Tinka and Kaya's eyes are the same in pics (green) Kaya is silky and Tinka is definitely cottony. I have her in a puppy cut now cause it was getting so BIG! They are both 11 months old, so I think they won't be changing now, will they? omega |
disappointing coat My precious little Beau has a beautiful coat but his hair does not grow to the floor....it kinda peters outs an inch or two short of the goal.....he's two; also he has a bit of a wave to all of his coat and a couple of days after his grooming it seems to curl up. He has a beautiful stance; looks so yorkieish in every way but he falls short on his coat......any ideas? He's full blood and had a very good blood line so I'm rather disappointed.http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/images/icons/icon8.gif |
Wow, I'm glad you dug up this old thread because I'd never heard of the eye glow. Does anyone know of the reason behind this? My 2 girls glow green & are definitely silky. |
1 Attachment(s) lol- I didn't even realize how old it was until you said something. I am not sure what the 'scientific' reasoning is behind the eye reflection but it does seem to be true. Wish I would have known:rolleyes:. This is how my cotton coat eyes look every time I take a picture |
