What is a "good" shampoo (that won't empty my life savings!) Okay everyone, Quincy is my first yorkie and I'm not really sure what kind of shampoo to use. I have to give him a flea bath every week because for some reason fleas are really prevelent in our area. But I've been using his puppy shampoo for his other weekly bath, and his coat just looks dull and gross. When we got him it was really shiny and silky and I don't know if it's the shampoo or what? But I can't afford extremely expensive stuff, so is there anything a reasonable price that I can use to get him lookin good again? |
it could be the shampoo and it also could be the food you are feedin |
the cheapest best shampoo that i have used is the mane and tail that you can get most any where. puts a nice shine to them. |
I like Tropiclean Luxury 2 in 1 Shampoo Plus Conditioner. Petco has it on sale for $8. |
the cc systems has a day to day kit for $10 it comes w/shampoo, conditioner, volumizer, and a detangler spray mine has lasted me for a bit you can get that on thier website the link is on here also i alternate that with aussie mosturizing shampoo in the purple bottle ($3) and aussie deeeepp conditioner ( a smaller white bottle w/purple lettering) ($3) - you can get the aussie at walmart or target |
Thanks for the advice everyone, I didn't know that it could be the food too though...he just eats the stuff that our german shepherd eats that we get from costco. He was always taking her food anyways and we just found it easier to buy one kind of food. Maybe I'll put him back on science diet or something |
how old is your yorkie? |
He is four or five months old |
I just bought cowboy magic for Peeka and i got 16 oz bottle of shampoo and 16 oz conditioner for $5.99 each and this stuff kicks butt Peeka is so shiny and soft now and silky to after only using it 2 times but i also bought a detangler and shine leave in it was $9.99 but well worth it |

maybe the flea shampoo is stripping the shine from the hair? |
I ordered the cowboy magic shampoo and detangler & shine for under 15.00 at petsmart. i like the way it makes her soft and shiny but the smell doesn't last more than a few hours esp. if they play outside.:) |

Have you thought about the flea drops you put on once a month, like Advantage? It works wonders for our dogs since we live on lots of sand and are invaded with sand fleas through the summer. Our dogs NEVER have fleas, so less baths and maybe that would help the dulling fur if your baby had less baths...the advantage plus a great shampoo would be a great combo!! Dawn |
I posted this on another thread. I use tea tree oil and then mix it with ivory liquid dish soap. so I pour a bit of tea tree oil and then top it off with soap in my hand. for exact measures 1/2 tea spoon to t1 table soop of soap. keeps the fleas off for a few days and also makes the coat nice. this is what my vet recomended. works great to keep lice out of kids heads too..... (I put about a table spoons to a bottle of shampoo, that was off the subject) |

It works wonders for our dogs since we live on lots of sand and are invaded with sand fleas through the summer. And I order so many varieties of shampoo. =============================================== williamrichard :( |
MinkSheen is very afforable...it think it cost $27.95/gallon. And it was also design to prevent fleas....it leaves the hair shiny and smooth...hehe here is a thread i created after my first time using MinkSheen http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/my-...6-tootsie.html and here is the link to their website...hehe Miscellaneous Products |
I hope this isn't too off topic but - I was under the impression that tea tree oil can be bad for dogs when they ingest it. Also I have heard that small dogs should avoid it externally as well because of their size and unknown toxicity levels. |
I use Minksheen and earthbath both are good |
minksheen or coat handler good for silky coat? |

Minksheen is our favorite of all. It's the best for a silky coated Yorkie, not sure on the cottony coated ones. |
