does trimming hair help it grow?? Hi everyone! I just posted this on the General area but thought it would be better to post here. I hope that's ok. I've been reading many posts about grooming, but I don't think I found an answer to my question. Oakley's 1st birthday is coming up and I still haven't taken him to the groomers because I want to grow out his hair. I bathe him once a week (he spends alot of time outdoors) and I brush him out daily. Is it bad if I do not trim his hair? I do trim his nails, ears and butt, but otherwise have not cut the rest of his body. I want his hair to grow out but is not trimming a bad idea? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks! |

Depends on the ends of the hair. Hair ends tend to get dry and brittle and even may split or break (same as human hair). Trimming slightly may do some good. But, since hair grows from the root and not the end, it will not stimulate more hair growth. Good hair depends on the genetics. Does your dog have a true silk coat? Your wooly/cotton coats will be more faster growing than your silk coat. From there, diet and shampoos help to keep the skin moisturized and healthy. |

I will have to say I was BRAVE and cut Pearl's Fly away hair all the way back to about 1/2 inch when she was about 9 months old(It was long to begin with). It DOESN"T grow any faster but I will say it is BETTER hair. It now is more of a lay down kind of look:rolleyes: . It's now about 1 1/2 inches . |
Trimming Coat Hi, I'll first introduce myself, I'm Mary from Dallas and new to this group, I breed and show yorkies. But 2nd I groom. I can only tell you what works for me; I tip the ends of a coat monthly, until it reaches the ground and past when it requires actual trimming. Brushing the coat daily is not recommended. It was told to me that brushing a dirty coat causes more damage. The actual secret to growing a good coat is keeping it clean. Mary |

You didn't mention what kind of coat he has? Is it a silk coat which I would assume it is as soft coats will usually grow very quickly. Different dogs will grow coat at different rates, some are fast growing some are slower. |
I have had Abigail groomed once and they just trimmed her and that was before she 1 and I have trimmed her a twice since then and her hair is still taking forever to grow it is not quite halfway to the floor yet. She will be 2 in Sept. any suggestions should I just keep trimming every once in a while she gets a bath once a week. |

I've been wondering about that myself. Oliver will be 2 in November. I bathe him every week, clean ears, trim nails when needed, but have only had his hair "trimmed" by a groomer 2x so far. I was afraid to keep cutting it because, even though it has grown some, it doesn't look to me like its growing fast enough. I guess I'll just have to be patient! Thanks for the info. :D |
