does trimming hair help it grow?? Hi everyone! I just posted this on the General area but thought it would be better to post here. I hope that's ok. I've been reading many posts about grooming, but I don't think I found an answer to my question. Oakley's 1st birthday is coming up and I still haven't taken him to the groomers because I want to grow out his hair. I bathe him once a week (he spends alot of time outdoors) and I brush him out daily. Is it bad if I do not trim his hair? I do trim his nails, ears and butt, but otherwise have not cut the rest of his body. I want his hair to grow out but is not trimming a bad idea? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks! |
I am anxious to know this too!! I will bump it so it doesn't get lost!! |
Depends on the ends of the hair. Hair ends tend to get dry and brittle and even may split or break (same as human hair). Trimming slightly may do some good. But, since hair grows from the root and not the end, it will not stimulate more hair growth. Good hair depends on the genetics. Does your dog have a true silk coat? Your wooly/cotton coats will be more faster growing than your silk coat. From there, diet and shampoos help to keep the skin moisturized and healthy. |

I'll try to get a pic posted so you can see his coat, I think it's somewhere in btw silk and wooly. I know I just need to be patient and wait for it to grow. I'm doing my best - feeding him natural balance w/ missing link or olive oil, i use pet silk shampoo & conditioner and will be buying CC ice on ice and gold brush soon. |
this is a good question i would like to know to. |
I will have to say I was BRAVE and cut Pearl's Fly away hair all the way back to about 1/2 inch when she was about 9 months old(It was long to begin with). It DOESN"T grow any faster but I will say it is BETTER hair. It now is more of a lay down kind of look:rolleyes: . It's now about 1 1/2 inches . |
Trimming Coat Hi, I'll first introduce myself, I'm Mary from Dallas and new to this group, I breed and show yorkies. But 2nd I groom. I can only tell you what works for me; I tip the ends of a coat monthly, until it reaches the ground and past when it requires actual trimming. Brushing the coat daily is not recommended. It was told to me that brushing a dirty coat causes more damage. The actual secret to growing a good coat is keeping it clean. Mary |

What do you mean by "tip" the ends of the coat? |

You didn't mention what kind of coat he has? Is it a silk coat which I would assume it is as soft coats will usually grow very quickly. Different dogs will grow coat at different rates, some are fast growing some are slower. |
I have had Abigail groomed once and they just trimmed her and that was before she 1 and I have trimmed her a twice since then and her hair is still taking forever to grow it is not quite halfway to the floor yet. She will be 2 in Sept. any suggestions should I just keep trimming every once in a while she gets a bath once a week. |
pics of his coat 3 Attachment(s) I hope you can tell what type of coat he has with these pics |

I've been wondering about that myself. Oliver will be 2 in November. I bathe him every week, clean ears, trim nails when needed, but have only had his hair "trimmed" by a groomer 2x so far. I was afraid to keep cutting it because, even though it has grown some, it doesn't look to me like its growing fast enough. I guess I'll just have to be patient! Thanks for the info. :D |
one more... 1 Attachment(s) OH, and one more thing, I know I've read here on YT about being able to tell what type of coat yorkies are according to their eye color in pictures, but above (where he's hiding under the bed), he has greenish eyes. But look at this other picture of Oakley - he has blue eyes. So that's why I'm not sure what type he is. Thanks for your input everyone! |
devoted to Lucy! I was glad to hear from Mary, too. I had Lucy trimmed in a Schnauzer(sp) cut in June because it is so hot here. It's beginning to grow out now. I wash her once a week and keep her nails, rear, etc. trimmed. I'd like her coat to grow out for winter, but if it's not very long I can get her some really cute clothes! Kim & Lucy:aimeeyork |
Ok, this is going to sound really strange but.....My Grandparents used to do things "by the light of the moon". Ever heard of it? It's a stage that the moon goes into. My grandpa trimmed a horses tail that was short and stubby "in the light of the moon" and he said that the tail grew until it touched the ground. I know that my husband (he's a farmer) says that sometimes the weeds are easier to kill than at other times. (during "the dark of the moon") http://www.griffin.peachnet.edu/ga/l...antbymoon.html I know that "back in the olden days" that people did things according to the moon. My grandparents were good Christian people and they did many things "by the moon". My grandma would tell me when to potty train my kids or when to wean them off of the bottle. It always seemed a little easier if I did it when she told me to. I guess what I'm getting to is that if you want your puppies coat to grow longer try trimming it lightly by the light of the moon. (You're on your own, however, on finding out just exactly when that is!!!) Good luck!! |

Let me begin by saying that a silk coat feels cool to the touch, even in warm weather, and a soft coat feels warm to the touch. You can usually tell a soft coated yorkie by their feet, they look like they have fluffy bedroom slippers. Mary:aimeeyork |

To keep the coat on my show dogs, I keep them clean use a good conditioner when I bath them and once they are getting about a year old I start wrapping the coat. It keeps them from peeing on the coat, keeps it from tangling and helps keep it cleaner and gives them free run. |
Thanks everyone for all the input. My Oakley is my baby and all i'm concerned with is his health and having a pretty coat will be a plus. So I guess the consensus to having a healthy coat entails the following: besides genetics 1. good food 2. keep him clean (bathe as necessary w/o drying out his skin & hair) 3. use good shampoo & conditioner 4. brush out mats 5. trim his nails, ears, butt, private area 6. trim the ends of hair if breakage and split ends |

So are you saying that Silky Coats have smooth feet? My yorkie doesn't have fluffy feet....she is very smooth but I am not sure she is cool to the touch...she is going so much that I think she pants and is hot half the time!! :) |
