Can't keep the mats out I know you are all probably tired of hearing about my quest for Zoie's "perfect" products. She has a cottony coat at 7 months and I have used Cowboy Magic for all of a week but she is constantly getting mats. I found lots of them today around her shoulders. The under part of her coat isn't getting combed out it looks like. I just bought a new 16mm CC brush and I think it's not working as well as my previous 27 mm brush. I used an old dog brush today that had rounded tips that were probably 27mm and I got alot of them out after conditioning the crap out of her coat, using PetSilk Silk, Cowboy Magic, Pantene Leave-In-Conditioner and lots of brushing. Then I had so much stuff on her she was not even soft and I had to rinse her off and start again. I just think someone else has to have gone through this and have a good suggestion for product or brush. I guess it's back to the longer pins that I thought I didn't need! Plus the new CC brush, the bristles are stiffer and that doesn't work as well on her for some reason. |
Hi, Cooper has a cottony coat and matts too, especially wearing tanks and his harness vests. I use Cowboy Magic and I use a comb to get down to the skin. I only have to do it once a week (usually do it twice to three times though), and the matts don't come back for at least a week after the cowboy magic. I have tried the brushes, but they just didn't get down to where he matts. I use a regular black comb with the fine toothed end and the larger spaced teeth on the other end. This is the best combo I have found so far. I have also used Pantene detangle and the ice on ice (they worked okay), but the Cowboy Magic and the comb is what works best for us. Hope this helps and good luck!! :) |
Help Help Help My little Yorkie, Jasmine has a cottony coat and I took her to the groomers today and told her she had some matts. When I went to pick her up the groomer had to shave her tummy and all four legs. I know the hair will grow back . The groomer told me to get a comb with teeth close together to get all the matts. On top of this, Jasmine hates for me to brush and comb her and it is a constant fight. What can I do???? My other Yorkie had a silky coat and I never had to deal with as many matts. I love her to death and the poor baby is upset about her hairless tummy and legs. I keep telling her it is ok. She is 4-1/2 months old. Where can I purchase Cowboy Magic? Thanks for all your help. I love Yorkie talk so many nice people and so very understanding and helpful. Marhat and Jasmine (my precious little girl) |
My guys are now 6 and 7 months. I keep a brush on the end table next to my chair. At night after they are worn out and want to sit on my lap, I brush them. They sit much better for it than they used to. |
What kind of comb is it and where did you get it? I'd like to try the comb idea, I'm getting desperate! |

You can do a search for it and find CM. I bought it at a local farm and home supply store. I was surprised to see they had it! It's alot like the Pet Silk silk serum. I like the smell of the Pet Silk much better than Cowboy Magic but the Cowboy Magic might be a bit more concentrated. I can't believe your baby is upset by her hairless tummy and legs. Is she hiding or what? I've already spent so much of this puppy of mine and now it looks like I'll be buying a comb too!! I'm going to ask my groomer what she used on Zoie because it left her tangle free for a WEEK and she smelled so good for at least 5 days. I wish I could afford to have her groomed every couple of weeks, just bathed, blowdried, and feet and ears trimmed. THat would make my life so much easier. :-) If Zoie's hair never gets better, which I don't think it will, I'm in for a lot of brushing and I already brush her at least once a day if not twice! |
It's just a regular old people comb I got at Target. The black one with the wide spaced teeth at one end and the closer spaced teeth at the other end. I had a groomer tell me to try one of these and I have found it works the best for Cooper's hair and getting close to the skin where he mats. |
Hi Marcia, Don't worry, once Jasmine's adult coat comes in she won't get those matts. Petey and Rosie don't get matted. We use the Cowboy magic now too. I found it at Amazon.com. It works great on both types of coats. Wally is going to the groomer Friday, he has matts on his legs also. I don't know how he got them, but they are getting worse. They will probably have to shave him down as well. I tried, but he won't cooperate with me. Keep on trying to comb/brush Jasmine, she'll learn to love it. Try it when she is tired and sitting in your lap. Petey just rolls over now on his back and lets me brush him out. He used to hate it too. Don't worry, things will get better. :) Kim |

You need to get a slicker brush. You pull the hair in an upward postion, then take the slicker brush and brush downwards, pulling a little at a time. That will get the matt out. Keep doing it on the same matt until it's out. Also, brush them out before wetting them. Wetting them with matts makes it worse. |
I use Cowboy Magic and a flea comb. Works great for me. |
I use the small brushes from Walmart, they are about $1.67. The thing I like best about them is that my pups are happier to let me brush them. They are not too soft or too stiff and pully. I have them at every place I sit and brush whoever is in my lap. I use a spray conditioner if the hair is fly-away. I actually find it is a little easier to brush if their coat is damp. I also lift their hair and brush down from the matts. I find clothes and harnesses tend to matt their hair, so I try to remove them when not needed. |
I use a fine tooth comb I bought at PetSmart. Johnson and Johnson's No More Tangles sprayed directly on the matt to saturate it, really works well. I have two cotton coats- they sure can be a challenge! I've recently decided to keep them both in puppy cuts and it has really made my life easier. |
Well, I've used Aussie 3 minute mirace DEEEEP. And three days after her bath she is almost mat free when I went to brush her. I brushed her out three times after her bath, it went much easier and I skipped one day of brushing but today she had a few small tangles, but they came out. I think the conditioner made all the difference and this is the softest her coat has ever been. Beats everything else I've bought. I've used Ice on Ice, Pet Silk silk serum, Cowboy Magic and baby detangler, NOTHING beat the Aussie 3 minute miracle DEEEP. I didn't buy the regular, they have something in an upright cylinder called DDDEEEEEEPP. That's the one I bought. Best $4 I've spent in a long time. I can't wait to use this again. She even smelled good. |
YEAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I love when people say they like the DEEEP. I brag about it all the time on here but I don't think people believe me.....LOLOL:p if you actually leave it on the full 3 minutes it works even better!!!!! |
Did I not mention that I left it on a full 3 minutes? I timed it !!! And I'm glad you saw this to get validation on your DEEEeP! It is a great product for Zoie for sure. Thanks for the idea! LOL |
LOL.. I use it on my hair too and wouldn't trade it for any other expensive conditioner.;) People just can't believe it's so cheap and works so well. I see it all the time at Target for sale for 3 for $9 |

Bella is almost two and I use Ice on Ice. It's reasonably priced because you mix it with water. But whatever you use try to seperate the big nots with you hand first. Until I am satisfied that I have enough of it out with my fingers then I use the comb. HTH |
I use the Cowboy Magic concentrated detangler and shine (not the shampoo or conditioner). I have never had a matt it didn't dissolve. They have a website with a store locator (usually farm and horse supply). www.cowboymagic.com You can also purchase it at www.tobysnaturalpets.com and also check out the life for teeth spray while you're there - it works instantly (and lasts) for bad breath and removes tarter. |
I deal with matts as well, and she hates to be combed. I do it when she is tired and sitting on my lap in the evening. A little olive oil works real good to. |
We changed products....again I was suffering the same fate with my boy as is coat is sorta in the middle of cottony and silky. His is basically a puppy coat that is long and tangles like mad. Well, I have been using all the deep conditioning stuff as well...CC, Petsilk, Pantene, you name it. I even tried my Alterna Cavier shampoo and conditioner on him. I have every kind of brush known to man I think and nothing helped. So, I took him to my old groomer last Saturday. It was the first time she has seen him as the trip is over an hour and half one way, but sooo worth it. She said I was doing it all wrong. She aked if I wanted a soft coat or one that didn't mat, and I obviously went with the mat-free one, thinking that would be a miracle!! Today, it has been 5 days since the grooming and only a few tiny mats under the armpits and I haven't brushed him all week. She used Les Poochs Moisturizing shampoo and their conditioner on him and no sprays afterward. I am convinced. Now, what do I do with all this PetSilk stuff I have lying around??? |

I wanted to tell you that at 7 months - her coat is still going thru changes - both my girls had matting problems at that age ....after about 1 year old - that will subside somewhat. |
So, exactly what were you doing wrong according to her? I'd love to know how to approach the situation, although the Aussie 3 minute mirace DEEP does both for me. I might look into the stuff she recommended, but I still have Pet Silk to use and another brand or two I'm interested in too. Too many to choose from! Thanks for your info! |
I also use the detangler spray if there is a really stubborn mat. But I know on some occasions I have spent a whole evening grooming my 4 month old. |

what are you using from petsilk? i was just looking at that myself ... |
I have the moisturizing shampoo and conditioner, the leave in spray conditioner, the coat oil, and the rinse-free shampoo. Anyone interested?? I think I'm gonna sell it, at least some of it. |
I use the Clean Scent shampoo and the Rainforest Conditioner. I also use the silk serum. |

Ok, I just went in and bought both the cowboy magic and the mouth spray. I am willing to try most anything. Both my cotton and silky dogs get mats. My little Angel with the silky gets them beneath her throat from the harness I use in the car that attaches to her car seat. That's the only time she has it on but it seems to make some nasty mats. I am hopeful this will work. |
I just bought some Cowboy Magic from a Horse Tack Shop and tried it with Jake. He has a very cottony coat and absolutely hates being combed. I have also tried the Ice on Ice, but I like the Cowboy Magic better. I'm worried about what kind of residue it may leave on his skin. Has anyone had any reaction problems with this product? |
