bathing our babies.... Hi all, I have a question. I'm a new Yorkie owner and have done lots of research and talked to people and read here a lot. It seems like most of you bathe your Yorkies quite often. If you're not showing the dog, why is such frequent bathing necessary??? I have a Mini-Schnauzer too and she doesn't get a bath hardly ever unless she goes to the groomer. I feel like a bad mom all of a sudden!!!! Thanks, Omega |
I bathe my girls every sunday! I do it bc they start to look dirty after awhile! I like to keep them looking clean and fresh! |
I give my guy a bath about once a week as well and it is the same reason - he starts to get dirty after that long and i like to keep him fresh and smelling clean. Plus he is still a puppy and has not quite learned yet how to lift his leg without peeing on himself. I have baby wipes and wipe him down afterwards but after about a week he starts to smell like pee - yuck! |
Mine are past the wetting themselfs, but thhey both get a bath every Sunday, they look, smell and act better when they are clean, gee I wouldn't want to only get a bath once a week, but thats all I have the time for :aimeeyork |
I am back one schedule with bathing Twinkie once a week, her hair gets tooooo gross & dirty, plus the hair on her hind legs is so long that when she squats to pee she gets it on her legs.... no stinky feet for me! I was trying to leave her for 2 weeks to avoid drying her skin, but that didn't last very long :p |
the yorkie books i got recommends a bath every 7 - 10 days. so he gets it every 7 -10 days depending on how dirty he gets when going outside. |

Hi Omega! Welcome to YorkieTalk. I bathe Stewie every 7-12 days depening on how dirty he looks/smells. He sleeps right up against me at night in my bed and I do not want a stinky butt in my face :) Also, I know what you mean about other breeds. I know a lot of Maltese owners who don't bathe them as often as most of us do our Yorkies. They have such a diff coat so it doesn't get greasy. I think I used to bathe my Lab once every 2 mos. She shed a lot so she never looked or smelled dirty. Since Yorkies don't shed and have silky hair I think they need to be bathed more often than most other breeds |
I think it is their fur, it gets greasy looking and there is a smell if Bailey goes over a week he starts to get this.. " Frito " ( I'm not kidding he smells like Fritos) smell, and I know it's time.. And once he's bathed he smells good, his hair is all shiny and soft. |
lexi gets a bath once a week.. she starts looking oily after a week |
Yorkie hair is like human hair. Frequent washing does not take away the oils like it does in other dogs. Their hair needs frequent washing for the same reason yours does. to keep in shiny and silky. It also grows like human hair, it doesn't get to a certain length and then stop growing. It keeps growing. |
Yes, I was going to say all the above. Maybe your Yorkie has a little dryer type hair and doesn't look all greasy and grimy. I have one that gets oily looking a LOT faster than the other 3. It is just the breed. Most breeds don't get a bath anywhere near as often because it isn't necessary. WELCOME TO YT!!!! |
Punkin gets greasy quickly. A bath every week is definitely necessary for her. Sometimes she is extra greasy and she has one a bit more frequently. She doesn't love the bath, but tolerates it. We always have a fun game afterward so I think this is why. |
bathing thanks for all your great ideas and suggestions. i gave my Tinka her first bath with me ( i think her breeder gave her one or two) a couple days ago and she did great. she just stood there waiting patiently. (and shivering) she visited a horse farm with me yesterday where my son takes lessons, so needless to say, she needs another bath. she loved the horses and the other dogs and cats and all the people. she is a wonderful dog. i'm so glad i got her. omega |
I bathe mine about once a week. It keeps their hair clean and their skin clean from dirt and oils. |
Bathing our babies.... Thanks guys. I was wondering the same thing. Lex likes to play hard and roll around on the lawn and after a few days of this he tends to smell rather funky. Someone told me twice a month. But I figured since they have regular hair a bath once a week with a good doggie shampoo will be good. After a few days of rolling in the dirt and on the grass he tends to look a bit rough around the edges Thanks. ...lol. |
