Another great product you can get cheap for matts and tangles is JOHNSONS NO MORE TANGLES for Babies.....Spray directly on the tangle and work it out with your fingers....A groomer I used to go to swore by this stuff and it DOES work - for about 5 $$ |
Crazy Pet (very berry scented) This is the first shampoo we got, right after we got Trixie. Not bad, but the smell... I guess the name says it :D CC Systems I used daily shampoo, conditioner and ice on ice spray. I loved this stuff. It made her coat so soft and silky. But she got very itchy and her coat got oily after a few days. Virbac (Keratolux and Humilac) Trixie got diagnosed with Seborreah, an overproduction of oil in her skin, that makes her coat go from dry to oily back to dry etc. So now we use veterinary shampoo. I don't really care for it mostly because we have to let it soak in for 5 minutes, and poor Trixie is shaking while it soaks (even with heater pointed at her...) It seems to be a little harsher on her coat as well. Although now it stays silkier longer and she's not as itchy. So it does what it's supposed to do. The Humilac is a conditioner spray, which is pretty good. I'm hoping her coat will get better and then I can try some other shampoos!!!! |
This is a really good thread ,will need to make notes on all the products and stock up on some when we come over to the US in August. Hubby will have a fit if I use all my luggage allowance on dog products LOL. We are using Crazy Dog Baby Powder smells lovely but doesn't last.Alfie always seems to need some sort of conditioner or ends up matting. So we use Johnsons Baby conditioner.(someone on YT recommended this) We have also used the Squirt products which where the puppy shampoo , the conditioner, and the spray detangler !! The spray detangler lost the power of spraying within a few uses and we had to buy a spray bottle to decant the detangler into. My husband says that I spend more on the dogs hair than his!!! The problem I have is ,I wash them and then about three days later they look as bad as ever, any tips on this. I do wash them 1 a week I sometimes try to leave it a fortnight but this just does not work for us.So I will be keeping an eye on this post for some good tips. |

When you spray some on and brush - they look neater and it also moisturizes the coat without a greasy look. |
Julie...Plush Puppy is international - HERE are the countries they export to http://www.plushpuppy.com.au/ |
Thanks a lot Vilette I have added the plush puppy to my favourites and will try out their products . I think you can get Vitaclean products here, if you tell me what you like I can always keep a look out for it and send you a bottle. I dont know why shipping is so expensive from the US as I send stuff out to my friend from here Airmail all the time and its not too bad, but as soon as you order things the shipping is very costly from the US. |
Well I haven’t been around in a while and was thrilled to come back to this thread. I love it. I’ve been looking around for info on the shea pet products and the only review I could ever find was one done with a bulldog, not the same kinda coat what-so-ever. Now my husband won’t be so happy to hear that I need to try it thanks to Rocelle’s review but oh well. Ok Reagan has a cottony coat, and if I had to choose between thin and thick I would say thin, so thin cottony coat. Well first I started off with human products mainly a baby shampoo when she was a puppy. After that we went to Groomax (oh how I miss that lavender baby shampoo smell though). I didn’t stick with Groomax, bought at Petsmart, very long though. Honestly it wasn’t so much about the results as the smell. The shampoo was Soothing Oatmeal and didn’t smell to bad, kind of a vanilla smell. The conditioner on the other hand, was Silk Protein and smelled like strawberries, not just any strawberries a very sweet candy like strawberry that gave me a headache. I honestly can’t remember how it worked on her hair though, since I didn’t use it long. After that I tried and am still using Plush Puppy. I’m so so on the products. I use the Natural Conditioning Shampoo and Silk Protein Conditioner. I also have the Protein Coat Balm and Swishy Coat. I really liked the results when I first started using the products, so a lot of my so so-ness could be from just using it for a while and no new dramatic results instead just the same ole good results all along. After the bath on her wet hair I use a dab of the Swishy Coat (its like a hair gel that straightens the hair) I do love this, I notice a difference from when I use it and when I don’t. Her hair is just so much neater and polished looking. Then I blow dry her and put a bit of Protein Coat Balm on. This kind of helps any fly aways and calms down the hair as well as giving it a soft feel. The scent of the shampoo/conditioner is fairly strong and lasts for a little while so if you don’t like it you do have to live with it for a while. I didn’t mind it so much (but then again I was just coming from that strawberry stuff that I didn’t like at all) but my sister hates the smell and commented several times on how it stunk. I do really like, however that the shampoo and conditioner smell the same, I really don’t like it when they don’t, such as the Groomax vanilla with straberries. One more thing about the products the groomer said that her coat and skin were very healthy when I took her in and this is what we had be using. He said that before he knew what we were using so there wasn't any bias or anything like that. He said that if we change make sure to get another quality shampoo because oftern cheaper shampoos can dry out the coat so I guess he was happy with her results on the PP products. I have to say though my mother came down around Christmas and in the middle of her visit Reagan was getting a bit itchy so I used the Groomax Oatmeal Shampoo to help with that and finished with the Plush Puppy Conditioner and my mother was very impressed. Reagan was a quite bit silkier, softer, and shinier. You guys have definitely given me some ideas on things to try, the shea pet maybe and definitely PP’s sea breeze oil. Great thread thanks for starting it. Oh and sorry mine was so long, for those of you who actually read it all. |
I actually read it all and thought you did a very good job. Isn't this much better than ..... I loved it or didn't like it?........ I like to hear the reasons why. This thread really is a gigantic help. :thankyou2 |
We also started using the Buddy Wash Shampoo and Conditioner. They work great. I also love them smell. I just bought the leave in spray and have not used it yet. I am sure it works as well as the other stuff. :) |

When I hear someone loves something... and they have a silky coated yorkie -that same product may not work for those for a cottony coated yorkie |

I just bathed Punkin for the second time with the Eqyss Microtek shampoo. It seemed to work pretty good. She gets so greasy and this time we were able to make it to 9 days without a bath instead of 5-7 days. The first time it seems to make her coat dry, but this time not so bad. I'm going to see if I can get the conditioner and see what that does. Punkin has cottony hair as well. I have also seen a big decrease in her scratching! http://www.eqyss.com/pet_microtek_shampoo.asp |

Breeder recomendation Hi everyone-you all are hilarious! This is better than crime TV! I just got my puppy so have no experience with hair products. My breeder uses Bio Groom. Has anyone ever used it? She said Oatmeal cream. My puppy seems to have very silky soft hair. ~I will have pictures soon. Thanks for any input. Kaitlyn :) Bruno :animal-pa |

Ok I'm back to rate some more. I decided after reading this thread to try the Pet silk line and Shea Pet line. I had been using Plush Puppy. First let me say that I have only had them for about a month and have only used them each twice so this isn't long term results. I'll start with the Shea Pet. I loved this the first time I used it. I ordered both products at the same time and this got her first so I tried it out first. I got the Shea butter shampoo with oatmeal and lanolin and the Shea butter condidtioner with allontion and tea tree oil. Her coat was so shiney and it brought the gold out beautifully. The scent isn't bad, maybe not something I would choose but definately not something I hate. Overall I really like this product I loved it the first time I used it and was just as happy the second. I posted pics of her after she had a bath using these products here... http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39793 Ok now the Pet Silk. Love, love, love it. Her hair is so much silkier and shinier. This also really brings out the gold in her, so much that my husband noticed it last night after he gave her a bath. Before her gold just seemed very dull and with both the Pet Silk and Shea pet its so much prettier. I got the Tropical Forrest Scent in both Shampoo and Conditioner and the silk serum. I have to say I've heard from a couple people that they were looking for something without a heavy scent and this may be something to try. You can definately smell it while giving her a bath but once she's dry the smell is very faint and really only lasts a couple days. The smell of the silk serum even covers it up. I say it only lasts a couple of days but I haven't noticed that she was smelling bad really after those days just not still smelling like the shampoo. It has the smell of tropical fruit in there, like mango and citrus, so its really not that perfumey anyway more fruity but not in an overly sweet fruity way. I'm really liking both of these products right now, later on after an extended use I'll post again with my thoughts. I have to say that when I was using the Plush Puppy her coat was soft but not very silky or at least not as silky as with these products. I actually thought, as I posted earlier, that she just had a very thin cottony coat. I had read that if their eyes are green in pics then they are silky, which hers are, but I still thought her coat was too soft just not silky enough to be a silky coat. I could have been just doing something wrong or just been too picky but now I will say I was wrong she has a silky coat. It just flows effortlessly just like silk. Using both of these products, at least so far, has made her coat look much better. My husband even agrees and from my husband to actually see it then its definately noticable results. |
Courtney ...THAT is a great review ! Thanks so much for sharing. Makes me now really want to try PET SILK LOL ! My husband would kill me cause I just bought some Plush Puppy so I guess that will be on my wish list. I really love reading these reviews - keep them coming everyone ! |
can you mention where you bought the products? omega |

Well...I'm glad you like the Shea Butter Courtney!!! I am really glad that you liked the She Butter Products too Courtney. Hooooray, I was not wrong after all of what I thougth of their products...of course those that I've tried so far. Well...we all know that it's a matter of trial & error. That's how we will discover evertything...right? Well, goodluck to everybody . Try more products and show us your reviews.Courtney... I'm really glad that you had a good experience with Shea Butter.:) |
Hey Girls, What do you think of this, I was looking at the reviews of the Chris Christensen brushes and thought I would look them up and see if I could get them here in the UK. Well wait for the price £25 pounds plus postage. That works out at $42.50 without postage. I wonder if it would be easier to get them from the US and pay shipping to the UK I will need to check it out. Can someone tell me the exact brush I will need as I dont wan to get the wrong thing. Thanks Julie. |
We started using the Buddy Wash, Buddy Rinse and Buddy Conditioner a couple weeks ago. Sissy's has two types of hair; silk and thin on her head and thick and cottony (I think) on her body. The Buddy products leave her body hair very soft and shiny and her head hair even softer and silkier. I love the lavendar/mint smell and the natural ingredient list. The Buddy Condtioner is a spray for an in-between bath freshener. Also fabulous! I use a Lil Pals comb for Sissy. She is in a puppy cut and she gets combed once daily and this keeps her looking very nice - no mats at all. The Buddy products are approx. $10 each and I expect them to last at least a year. Got all the Buddy products from Amazon.com, comb from Pet Supplies Plus. |

When I got it though this was the cheapest place I could find, but you may be able to find a better deal....go down just a little bit and you will see them. http://northcoastmarines.com/shampoos_conditioners.htm ----- Rocelle-I'm glad I read your review and tried them. I had been wanting to try them but didn't know how they would work on a yorkie or even one with hair like a yorkie all I could ever find was a bull terrier or something like that. I definately agree its all about trial and error, especially since they can all have such different coats. Something may work great for one person and not for the next, but it is always nice to know it worked for someone before you go out and spend a lot of money on something. Thanks... |
any difference? is there any difference between Pet Silk and CC's Silk Spirit? I have the Silk Spirit now and am wondering if there is difference enough to warrant buying the Pet Silk to try. thanks, omega |
Great thread ... Villette, you're a genius!! :p When we brought Toto home, among the "stuff" that Ava sent was Coat Handlers Clarifying Shampoo & Coat Handlers Conditioner [Leave In/Rinse Out]. We loved it, but you know how that goes .... read all the raves about every shampoo used by our members ... had to try it!! I have read this entire thread so I won't repeat what's already been said. I think there are only a couple mentioned here that we haven't tried! :) I always, always go back to our trusty Coat Handlers! It's great and Toto's coat is always shiny and the clarifying shampoo makes her gold look like a deep, healthy gold. Her hair is very cottony & when we had the "show coat" for so long, the CH made it easier to maintain and the black was always so shiny. Since we had about 10-11" of her hair cut [we left her face hair & topknot ... just shortened it a tad] for the first time in her life, I can actually use a comb on her body hair!! :) She is so much easier to groom and the drying time is unbelievable. Also, we have never, ever had a problem with her skin and she probably hasn't scratched a dozen times in her entire life! So ..... I would have to say that the CH is what we will always use!! ;) The only other thing I use is Bio Groom Silk Creme Rinse and only rarely use that .... just want a little different texture/smell sometimes. It works well and makes her hair very soft and clean smelling! When I realized that Toto's closet was full & began "re-organization", I realized that an entire shelf was full of all these "products"! :) I cleaned it all out, boxed up all that shampoo, conditioner, etc. and took it over to my friend [UYR] and gave it to her. She always has extra Yorkies and as we all know, there are lots & lots of different coats! What doesn't work well on one will work well on another! Are there any of our members who sell Coat Handlers?? I have always just ordered it online, but if we have someone who sells it, I would prefer to buy it from them! :p |
STOP, STOP, STOP! There are too many products, too many to try, it's all too confusing!! :dizzy: :dizzy: So many things sound so good, how is a person supposed to know? I've already bought a few of the ones mentioned here. Yes, they all make Tinka really soft and her hair is easy to brush, but I haven't tried anything yet that knocks my socks off. One good shake and her hair is all over the place like I never did anything to it. (kind of like mine, now that I think of it) She is still a pup, so does that make a difference? When do they lose their puppy coat? (I'm sure there's a correct way of saying that) So confusing........ my head is spinning around and around and around. Stop the merry go round! omega (i think) |

any answers to my question about puppy hair??? thanks |

I don't know if you can tell a difference between adult & puppy hair in dogs with a cottony coat though. I would think the texture would be about the same.... I could be wrong though. All the Yorkies I've had contact with were silky! The folks that have cottony pups would be able to tell you if there's a difference or not. |
Omega- I haven't used CC silk spirit so I don't know if there is a difference or not. Is it like a serum you put on when the hair is dry? If so I honestly wouldn't get something new until you finish what you have. I have some serum stuff that I used on my hair and put it on Reagan every now and then and while the Pet Silk serum is better, its not much better. I think all serums are going to be about the same one may be better than another but probably not enough for me to justify buying a new one in the middle of an old. If its a shampoo or conditioner product then I've just wasted you time sorry and I don't really know anything about it. Unless its drying you pup out though I might just stick with it and when its gone try something new if you want. As far as the puppy coat, I don't really know either. I know that there was a big change as far as Reagan goes. When she was in her puppy coat she got matts so quick and so much. Now she get a few small knots right under her front legs every now and then but nothing too bad and plus I don't always brush her everyday either. I pretty sure that some of it may fall out and if you don't keep that hair brushed out it will cause matts. So it is important to keep them brushed especially when they are changing from puppy to adult coat. About the shaking and the hair being all over the place well that's just going to happen. Every single time I get Reagan's hair up and pretty she shakes and I swear if it were long enough the hair on her tail would end up on top of her head. With what I am using now unless Reagan really gets messy, which she tends to do, I can brush her and her go back to looking pretty good and for about a week. It may even work longer than a week but by a week she's usually gotten herself pretty stinky. It does get overwhelming seeing all the different kinds of products. What I did is I found one I was interested in then read through here to see if anyone else had tried it to see what they had thought. This way you don't hear about all the great products and not know which to choose. You choose one then try to find out if its good or not. Although, I know, this is a little of a double edge because how do you know about some until you hear other talking about them. The ones I've bought just kinda stuck with me. I've always heard about CC but haven't yet really felt the want to try them so I haven't yet. I saw Shea Pet on the web and was just interested in them and remained so until I had heard about someone else liking them. Don't let it bother you'll find something you like it may take a little while or it may be what is in the bottle you already have at home. You never know, if/when that coat changes you may be in love with what you already have. Good luck in whatever choose to do and sorry I wrote a novel. |
Courtney ...I do agree with what you said - what works on puppy hair may not work on adult hair and vise versa.... I'm still very happy with the products I use and the only one I still want to try is Vellus. One day - I'll splurge...but for now the CC and Plush Puppy are doing the trick for Chanel and Cheri. |
