Worst day of my life! So my little Hiccup, 13 weeks old, was itching and scratching like crazy. I think it may be his shampoo (baby shampoo). Anyways, while looking to see if he had any flees I noticed he had a piece of gum on his paw that seemed really old. There was also a few pieces on his leg. I refuse to go near him with scissors of any sort because he's a wiggler so I took him to a petsmart near my place. I talked to a sweet lady and explained what needed to be done. She reassured me everything would be fine. Well.... When I got back to pick him up his HAIR WAS GONE! He was so cute and fluffy and now he looks like a rat/jack Russel. I can't recognize him. All his colors are gone and he's already showing white (his mom was parti) my heart hurts. I cried. How long will it take to grow back to at least a healthy fluffy look? He's 14 weeks now and I haven't seen any improvement. Not to mention the b**** cut his whiskers!!!!! I about lost it. One plus side of going, I learned that he had an ear infection which could explain the scratching. He's on meds now and that seems to be working well, but he still bits his paws and tries to bite his butt a lot. Any suggestions? Alergic to food maybe? (Blue buffalo puppy small breed) It's my first puppy and I feel like I screwed up so much by taking him there. Ill never do it again, it just sucks that there's no going back :( |

I understand how you feel. He is still absolutely adorable, though. I'm not sure how long it will take for him to grow out. I'm sorry you had to go through this. |
He's still a very cute pooch |
I don't know why some groomers can't follow instructions. I know it is upsetting but he is still a cutie. I would think in 4-6 weeks he should have some fluff back. |
Im pretty sure that I would NOT of paid for that grooming. Not because it looks bad,it doesnt, but because it is not what you asked for. If there is a window to watch I would have my nose pressed up against the glass. However I dont/wont take any of mine into a groomer. It took a little while but I learned how to do it myself. If a mistake is made,I am the one that did it. I used to wait for Mina to fall asleep in the evening after play time and would just snip a little here and there so she would stay freshened up all of the time. |
it is frustrating when you pay for something and don't get what you want// but he is still cute |
He is adorable with his new cut but I, too, would have cried. I have never had a bit of trouble with petsmart,; they have always done just as I asked, but I stand at the window and watch like a hawk and they know it because Huey watches me right back the whole time. :D Huey used to have his whiskers cut...I believe it started at Petsmart... and I know it doesn't hurt them like it does cats, but recently read a thread where it is better not to, so his aren't trimmed short anymore, but yesterday when I trimmed his mustache, I cut a bit off his whiskers and he gave me the evil eye. |
Oh he's still such a cutie!!! I love the shaved look though, my boys get shaved every 2 months or so. I would say within 2 months you won't even know he was cut that short. He'll be a fluff ball again. At least that's how it is with my boys. |
Thank you all for your kind words. I still love him no matter what and he is so happy with or without hair. He has completely changed my life and I'm learning so much. Definitely know what not to do when it comes to haircuts when I get my next puppy down the road. :) |
Oh, the dread of a first haircut. It is always shocking when they cut off the dark hair, and hand you a light colored dog that you barely recognize. But, even though you were not quite ready for it, the color change is inevitable, and part of growing up. If you prolong it, it can also look weird with part dark and part light. The hair certainly will grow back, but it's going to be light, and it's just a sign that your puppy is growing up. But, the good news is that he is absolutely adorable. It's good that you found the ear infection and treated it. Some of the other itching may be due to fleas or allergies, and the biting around the butt could also be due to anal gland being irritated or full. You should try to get comfortable with doing a little trimming on your pup. I'd suggest getting some scissors with rounded tips that won't hurt him. I especially like these for trimming around eyes, paw pads, private areas, and for removing little matts and occasional debris: Amazon.com: TINY TRIM ball tipped small pet... |
Oh my gosh you are right! My boys were groomed for the first time at 7 months old. I was SHOCKED when I went to pick them up! They just had a regular puppy cut, not that short even, and they looked so different! |
Oh I'm so sorry! :( I had a horrible experience with PetSmart with my Gigi for her first cut, too! I asked for a bit of a trim around her beard to keep it out of the water and for her ears to be trimmed a bit. Went back to get her and her WHOLE FACE was shaved! Whiskers, too! I was so upset I cried, too. I will never go there again. My male, Rascal, we keep trimmed really short because of his cottony coat {I do it myself since it mats like crazy}, so we really had no idea how bad this would be like. It was awful. I complained on FB and to corporate. All they did was send me a 10% off my next grooming appointment! I think not! :( Her face took a really long time to grow back, too. We found that the groomer at the kennel we use is fabulous and does an amazing job. I will never send my dogs to PetSmart or PetCo again, nor will I recommend them. :( So sorry for you and your pup! |
1 Attachment(s) We had a similar experience with Zadie (my first Yorkie) she had the most beautiful long flowing hair down to the ground ... we decided she needed a puppy cut as I was taking her to the beach regularly and she loved it ... before that my GF at the time didn't really take her out at all .... I picked a groomer that I knew and loved but she shaved to much off and cut the whiskers .. I was shocked but not totally freaked out ... my GF cried for a few days and was really angry .. I went and spoke to the groomer in a calm and friendly way and she took notes ... the groomer and I have become life time friends as well as my GF (now EX) stays in contact with her .... When Zadie died she came to visit which was really nice ... and now my Holly is booked to see her next month :-) All that to say I understand that this is a real shock and can be very upsetting when it happens .... but in some cases can be made into a positive ... Zadies hair never grew back the same but we ended up loving getting her a puppy cut in summer .. she was much easier to keep clean and I think she appreciated it too ... I can still see her bounding along the beach in pure joy :-) |
