Cleaning around eyes Does anyone has any suggestions on how to clean the gunk that is trying to build up in the fur around Jasper's eyes? I have tried a warm damp wash cloth but he is so squirmy. Ahhhh Help! Thanks, Steph & Jasper :animal-pa |
Cleaning around the eyes... Seems that you're on the right track with a warm damp cloth. I might suggest that you make that a warm "wet" cloth. My wife uses a paper towel really wet with warm water to loosen the "gunk" up and then she uses her nails. It works very well for her. Now the real squirmy part is something that pup will just have to get over by itself. Make sure a treat follows the cleaning and maybe even a little tidbit during the cleaning. Kind of takes their mind off that big old rag coming at them! |

I actually do that we wet ear q-tip and then I brush with fine lice comb. you have to do it every single day in order to keep it clean. |
I wouldn't use a q-tip around the eyes, poking hazard! If the eye boogers are really caked on there (it's been couple of days from last bath or cleaning) I would place him on the bathroom vanity, wrap a towel around his neck & while holding him w/one hand, wash his face as you would a child. If he moves his face too much, hold his head gently & wash w/the other hand. The eye gunk comes off easily w/just a little warm water, so he won't get totally wet. I just get my finger wet & apply the water to the corner of their eyes. I wipe their eyes everyday w/ a baby terry cloth, sometimes 2 times a day if it's watery for some reason, allergies or hair in their eyes. |
I had 3 yorkies by now and never poked anyone With a q-tip. I use it to remove the morning soft Gunk only. For harder ones I also give a facial wash. |

I use a little comb also. I brush him everyday. I have a squirmy one also. |
Thanks for all of the advice. And he is a very squirmy baby. :) I chose the route of washing just his head and face since his head seems to look oily. Then I just use my fingernails and gently get the gunk out quick. May not be the best idea, but it works. :p |
I use wet cotton balls and a flea comb to keep the eye area clean. |

Awesome advice.....wet area and a flea comb magically removes the goobers! |
I suppose this is a habit we must make every day in order to have clean eyes. I am really bad about cleaning my pup's eyes every day. Her eyes drain terribly and they gunk up really bad! When I see everyone's pictures, all the yorkies' eyes look so clean. Is this just something everyone does every day? My puppy's eyes drain so badly. |
My Izzy had very gunky (is that a word) eyes. My vet did a eye irrigation under anesthesia for blocked tear ducts, It worked well for about a month. He then said that we may need to do this every 2-3 months. Not an option for me or my baby. That much anesthesia is too much for a 3 pound baby, so I took her to a opthamologist who tested her for dry eyes among other things. One eye was abnormally dry so we started her on liquid tears twice a day. While she ocasionally needs facial cleaning the drainage has almost cleared completely. It was definenitly worth the cost. |
I have the same problem with one of mine and really have to keep on top of it (which I don't do often enough) the others seem to have a different set up with their eyes because they don't get so gooey. I think their eyes are sent in deeper so aren't so exposed to dust and irritants. Got to go and clean her up now that I have written. Feeling guilty... |
I think food and water makes a big difference. Jasmin used to have watery eyes. Someone in here said distiller water helps. So we switched to distiller water with a little acv and canine caviar good. She gets a little coconut oil here and there. This really help with the tears. Our vet recommended probiotics added to food. She said this will help completely. We haven't try this yet since her tears is not bad. I only clean her eyes every other week and had no tear stain. |
