17 weeks old and he still has wiry hair?? Buck still has short wiry hair but he is getting some softer hairs in around his muzzle. I bought him from a BYB and don't regret it at all! I instantly fell in love with him! Who wouldn't?? He obviously didn't come with papers and his "momma" was there, but she was definately a silky. I just wonder if he will ever get the softer hair? Not that it matters! Just wondering what the chances are? :) I will love him no matter the outcome. |
It's hard to say. Who was his daddy? |
Since you got him from a BYB, then they have the sire as well. You should ask her to show him to you. He's lucky to have a wonderful home with you now. Congratulations! Pictures please. :p |

First off, let me say congrats on your new little one. But bragging about buying him from a BYB, umm..not sure about that. Mine came from a BYB but I didnt know better. By the way what did the dad look like, I am sure the softer hair will come eventually. |
Let me explain.... First off, I am not bragging! I found the "breeder" online, through a local newspaper ad. I called her and spoke with her for quite some time before I made the decision to go and purchase him. The "breeder" owned the female dog and her mother owned the male, that is why the father was not on the premises. She advised me that the male was a 5 lb silky and that he was also blue and gold..... the mother was larger than she had told me... she said this was due to pregnancy weight and her hair was very long and silky, so she looked larger than what she weighed.... the truth to the matter is, I had 2 small children thinking that they were getting a puppy for Easter and this one was it. I looked at him and fell immediately in love with him. I figured his hair was course because he came from a large litter of 6 and that he didn't get the proper nutrients. I had to take him him home and make him a happy, healthy little puppy! He has made me very happy and the children are sooooo happy about our little Buckley Boo Boo!!! I don't care if his hair is ever going to be silky... I was just wondering if anybody else had this same situation and their dog ended up with the silky hair. It really doesn't matter one way or another... we are completely happy with our little guy!!! :aimeeyork:D |
Glad you found Buckley and that you love him so much. I would like to see some pics of him if you have some to post. The avatar is to small for me to see very well. If you have younger kids it sounds like he is a nice size for kids to play with. |
I can't figure out how to post the pics?? can you help?? |
Well I am glad that you guys are happy with your little one. I didnt mean to come off sounding rude, but it just seemed like you were boasting about him coming from a BYB, my mistake. I am sure that he will be gorgeous when he grows up, do you happen to have a photo of him? |
It will be really hard to tell about his coat until he is close to a year or later. He's still adorable.:) |

If his hair is wiry as puppy, then it will probably never be silky. I'm glad you are happy with your baby no matter what, but I hope next time you really take your time and support a good breeder. It's not about buying the perfect, most beautiful dog, it's about supporting great breeders, and the future of the Yorkshire terrier as a breed. When you buy a dog from someone you are saying that you approve of their breeding program. Best of luck! |
2 Attachment(s) Riley had course wiry hair at 14 weeks when we brought him home. but now he is 2 and he has very nice soft silky hair. so there is hope for your little guy too. a good high quality food will help he hair to be its best as well. but dont count on seeing much of a change in his hair untill his puppy hair all grows out and his adult coat comes in..here is Riley's hair now at 2 yrs. hope this helps. you can look at his album too, |
My Bug has what her groomer calls a 'crappy coat'. always been wiry. She is over a year old now and her legs are getting soft (hair not bones LOL) but the saddle is still seriously wiry. Her sister is a fluff ball, go figure. BTW, my groomer laughs when she says it and gives Bug kisses, no rudeness implied, it is what it is. |

Yorkshire Terrier Club of America – Breeder Referrals Let me again, repeat myself.... I contacted what I thought was a good breeder, as I have already said..... but unfortunately that person was not completely truthful. The only thing that she did say that was true, was that the puppy was a male. LOL I did try to negotiate the price and felt that my decision to purchase the puppy was based more on the 2 CHILDREN I have rather than the fact that the dog was not of good breeding. I DO NOT THINK that by purchasing this puppy, I am giving this person the go ahead to continue breeding! I can not control the actions of others. I merely wanted a puppy for my children and thought that I had taken all the proper precautions to purchase one. I had travelled a good distance with my children to get this puppy and could not disappoint them. I did not join this site to be criticized and moralized by other members, but to enjoy my puppy and to learn a little more about the breed and to try to make some friends along the way. I am not trying to be rude, but please do not post any more negative comments on my posts. I am a good person, with a good heart that only wants to enjoy the time I have with my new pet. :) |

No one is trying to be rude to you. I have already apologized to you, but you have to keep in mind when you come to a message board to post about yourself or your dog, everyone will have differing views on things. This is what makes message boards interesting. Of course this is JMO; But to each his own. And just to add, I dont think people are being rude, they are just trying to educate. |

This is where I strongly disagree with you, while you cannot "control" the actions of others, you do influence other people decisions. Money is one the best reinforcers there is, people do things they hate to do, for one reason and one reason only, MONEY. So when you give someone money, that in itself is highly reinforcing, you have also given them your stamp of approval. No one is criticizing you, you did what you thought was best at the time, I'm only suggesting that "I hope next time you really take your time and support a good breeder." How is this moralizing or criticizing? No one said you are not a good person; most of us have bought dogs from really bad breeders, and have had to learn the hard way why it's so important to support good breeders. I had two children when I bought a little Cairn terrier from a byb, who also lied to me. This dog inherited a genetic illness, and my two children watched in horror as out beloved littler dog died a miserable death. Things like that make you become an advocate for good breeding. I do hope you will have better luck than I had, and I hope your baby will be a healthy dog. I'm am very sorry if you felt I was criticizing you, this forum is a great way to educate others on why it's important to find a good breeder and what to look for and questions to ask, and how to tell the difference between a good and bad breeder. I'm only trying to help others as those before me, helped me. |

This happens to a lot of people, and I know this is one of my weaknesses as well. I know that I can't go to someone's house and look at the dogs and say "goodbye," especially if I felt like they were actually in a bad environment. I try to warn people if they know that this is true of themselves, to decide on the breeder over the phone and through emails. Once you see a cute puppy, few people have the strength to walk away. So many people see this as "rescuing" a dog, but it's really encouraging the breeder to produce more. You might also want to keep in mind rescues, if you ever want another dog, they have many that are in dire need of a good home, and most have been vet checked so you are aware of any problems they have. I have to say, you sound like a wonderful dog owner, and I'm thrilled that you are happy with your little guy. |
I really think you need to just calm down and breath. Nobody is being rude, nobody is criticizing. Your very first post said that you got your dog from a backyard breeder. People just want to make sure that others understand this is probably not the best decision. I am very happy that you are so happy with your new baby. I have 2 children also that have been disappointed a couple of times when we were hunting for our babies because we didn't get a dog after seeing the situation. But, they were ok after an initial sull up. LOL I too have jumped into situations with animals because I love them so much and want to take them all, I am actually in that situation right now because my husband wanted a dog and I agreed despite the fact that my gut told me otherwise. I wanted him to be happy. Anyway, I hope that you enjoy this wonderful forum and please do not take everything people say as rude or judgemental, they just want to inform. If you already know, that is wonderful. Anyway, your baby is absolutely adorable and I am very happy you and your children are happy. : ) |

I dont know if you missed my previous post, but I included a couple pics of Riley so you can see how he turned out, after having a crappy puppy coat too. he ended up with a beautiful adult coat. |

I think you are a wonderful person for loving your puppy no matter what type of hair he has. I grew up with a dog grooming mom. Many times I heard of people getting rid of their dogs simply because the dog didnt turn out to look like their breed did in magazines. I never understood this, do you get rid of your kids because they are not what you expected. Just a note... I know some one who paid $2000.00 for a SHOW quality french bulldog with the intentions on showing. 6 months after she had the puppy home he developed a rash brought him to the vet and he had hereditary mange. Called the breeder and the breeder didn't care, they were aware that the parents were carriers. Not defending BYB'S but things can happen no matter where you buy your dog. I also bought my first dog from a byb because I didn't have a clue how to find a "better breeder". I have learned much on this forum and will use that knowledge for the next puppy. I didn't want to rehash the same argument. Just wanted you to know that what I saw in your post touched me that you you will love your puppy no matter what it will turn out like. |
I also bought my dog from a BYB without knowing any better. She also came from a larger litter (5 pups) and has wiry, coarse hair. I would now look for a better breeder, however I love my girl more than anything! I know people fly dogs in all the time, but I had a BIG problem with not seeing where the dogs came from and not seeing the mom and dad in person. The BYB I got Claire from is a groomer and Claire was in perfect health, but you can tell the difference between BYB and others...0h well I have a wonderful girl and now I know th difference..too bad our next dog will be a choco lab (for the Hubby!) |
