17 weeks old and he still has wiry hair??
 

Buck still has short wiry hair but he is getting some softer hairs in around his muzzle. I bought him from a BYB and don't regret it at all! I instantly fell in love with him! Who wouldn't?? He obviously didn't come with papers and his "momma" was there, but she was definately a silky. I just wonder if he will ever get the softer hair? Not that it matters! Just wondering what the chances are? :) I will love him no matter the outcome.

Since you got him from a BYB, then they have the sire as well. You should ask her to show him to you.

First off, let me say congrats on your new little one. But bragging about buying him from a BYB, umm..not sure about that. Mine came from a BYB but I didnt know better. By the way what did the dad look like, I am sure the softer hair will come eventually.

First off, I am not bragging! I found the "breeder" online, through a local newspaper ad. I called her and spoke with her for quite some time before I made the decision to go and purchase him. The "breeder" owned the female dog and her mother owned the male, that is why the father was not on the premises. She advised me that the male was a 5 lb silky and that he was also blue and gold..... the mother was larger than she had told me... she said this was due to pregnancy weight and her hair was very long and silky, so she looked larger than what she weighed.... the truth to the matter is, I had 2 small children thinking that they were getting a puppy for Easter and this one was it. I looked at him and fell immediately in love with him. I figured his hair was course because he came from a large litter of 6 and that he didn't get the proper nutrients. I had to take him him home and make him a happy, healthy little puppy! He has made me very happy and the children are sooooo happy about our little Buckley Boo Boo!!! I don't care if his hair is ever going to be silky... I was just wondering if anybody else had this same situation and their dog ended up with the silky hair. It really doesn't matter one way or another... we are completely happy with our little guy!!! :aimeeyork:D

Glad you found Buckley and that you love him so much. I would like to see some pics of him if you have some to post. The avatar is to small for me to see very well. If you have younger kids it sounds like he is a nice size for kids to play with.

Well I am glad that you guys are happy with your little one. I didnt mean to come off sounding rude, but it just seemed like you were boasting about him coming from a BYB, my mistake. I am sure that he will be gorgeous when he grows up, do you happen to have a photo of him?

It will be really hard to tell about his coat until he is close to a year or later. He's still adorable.:)

If his hair is wiry as puppy, then it will probably never be silky. I'm glad you are happy with your baby no matter what, but I hope next time you really take your time and support a good breeder. It's not about buying the perfect, most beautiful dog, it's about supporting great breeders, and the future of the Yorkshire terrier as a breed. When you buy a dog from someone you are saying that you approve of their breeding program. Best of luck!

Riley had course wiry hair at 14 weeks when we brought him home. but now he is 2 and he has very nice soft silky hair. so there is hope for your little guy too. a good high quality food will help he hair to be its best as well. but dont count on seeing much of a change in his hair untill his puppy hair all grows out and his adult coat comes in..here is Riley's hair now at 2 yrs. hope this helps. you can look at his album too,

My Bug has what her groomer calls a 'crappy coat'. always been wiry. She is over a year old now and her legs are getting soft (hair not bones LOL) but the saddle is still seriously wiry. Her sister is a fluff ball, go figure. BTW, my groomer laughs when she says it and gives Bug kisses, no rudeness implied, it is what it is.

Let me again, repeat myself.... I contacted what I thought was a good breeder, as I have already said..... but unfortunately that person was not completely truthful. The only thing that she did say that was true, was that the puppy was a male. LOL I did try to negotiate the price and felt that my decision to purchase the puppy was based more on the 2 CHILDREN I have rather than the fact that the dog was not of good breeding. I DO NOT THINK that by purchasing this puppy, I am giving this person the go ahead to continue breeding! I can not control the actions of others. I merely wanted a puppy for my children and thought that I had taken all the proper precautions to purchase one. I had travelled a good distance with my children to get this puppy and could not disappoint them. I did not join this site to be criticized and moralized by other members, but to enjoy my puppy and to learn a little more about the breed and to try to make some friends along the way. I am not trying to be rude, but please do not post any more negative comments on my posts. I am a good person, with a good heart that only wants to enjoy the time I have with my new pet. :)

No one is trying to be rude to you. I have already apologized to you, but you have to keep in mind when you come to a message board to post about yourself or your dog, everyone will have differing views on things. This is what makes message boards interesting. Of course this is JMO; But to each his own. And just to add, I dont think people are being rude, they are just trying to educate.
