Is it rude.... to ask a groomer that your taking your baby too for the first time how long they have been grooming animals? Next month Ella's getting her spring puppy cut and i'm taking her to a new groomer. My groomer has 7 years of experience grooming and she's okay at it, but she NEVER has listened to what i what Ella's hair cut like. I mean Ella has only been groomed twice (both times by the same woman), it just seems like she goes to clip her w/ her own thoughts in mind and not mine. Anywho, what do you think? |
Yes, I would say ask as many questions as you need to in order to feel confident in your new groomer. The one time Ruby went to a groomer I was even more specific than asking how long she had been grooming. I wanted to know specifically about yorkies, and if she knew how to trim a yorkies ears correctly. |

All my groomers write exactly what I want done. And it's never rude to ask, I think they will be more attentive afterward. I went looking first without my dog until I was comfortable with the person. |
Of course not! It's actually a question I don't receive often. Being specific, but not having exceedingly high expectations is important. It's difficult for a groomer to give you that perfect image of what you want your dog to look like. That's something that everyone needs to accept and give some leeway. I ask my customers questions about everything. Ok Teddy bear head? Well do you want it long or short, do you want tipped ears or just trimmed? Do you want a visor or a topknot? Bringing in a dozen pictures of what you want your dog to look like doesn't always help. Not every dog has the same hair texture. Your specific instructions on what you do and do not want are the best tools. If your dog looks different, ask your groomer why it looks different from what you requested. "Why are Lola's feet not rounded like I requested?" You might be surprised to hear your Groomer say "I apologize, but Lola really doesn't like her feet touched. She struggles quite a bit. That was the best I could do without injuring her." As always, there's always those jerks who think they know what is best for your dog. In that case dump em! |
I actually had Biscuit groomed one time at a different groomer (in my vet's office) and when they brought him out to me.....he looked like a mini schnauzer! I couldn't even say a word I was so shocked...thank goodness hair grows back. I went to a different groomer from then on and learned to ask for a puppy cut with no top know. It is nice to hear that groomers do not usually get offended when owners ask for a specific type of cut.:animal-pa |
I certainly do not think it is rude, depending upon how you ask the question. You could even query what experience they have with small dogs, specifically this breed. Find out what they like most about grooming small dogs, what they like least? What is the most difficult circumstance they've encountered, and how did they handle it? IMO you need to develop a comfort level with their competence. When Remy is groomed, I am actually with him the entire time. As he is being trimmed Hannah will literally ask me - do you want this off, how short do you want this area? He is never out of my sight, he never waits in a cage. These were all requirements when I chose my groomer. |

I love my groomer. Before she even put a scissor to my Hugo, I got references. I saw pictures of her work. We even had an evalution in her home where I discussed what Hugo should get. I love the puppy cut with the teddy bear head as I find it more manangeable. I actually, drop him off in the morning, and I get a phone call from her saying that he is ready to pick up. Once, she even let me watch her as she was finishing his teady bear head. I trust her and I have found taht most Groomers in NYC have a "drop off" method of groomer. I do not mind it one bit as long as I can drop by and check in on my boy. |

Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I appreciate it. =] Anyway, i have another question. It's taken so long to grow Ella's topknot out. I can finally get it all up w/ hardly any bangs hanging down. I want a puppy cut when she goes to the groomer, as in the teddy bear face, but i want to keep the topknot. Will she look okay if i tell them to give her a teddy bear face but leave her topknot? It's so beautiful and i'd die if it had to be cut off. |

Ella has gotten groomed twice, this will be the third and the groomer never lets me sit in. I deff. feel like she wouldn't be as good if i was in there. Although, i wish i could be. I think the groomers need a one way mirror. That would be neat to see your pup w/o it seeing you. =] |

I never leave Ella. I freaked out when she told me she'd call me when Ella was done. I said no, i'll stay. She said i had to sit in the waiting room. I wasn't allowed to be w/ her. The groomer said it'd work better than way. Sometimes i'd just like to get a say in what she looks like though. |
I ask all kinds of questions before I use a new groomer. However like someone else said sometimes it takes a few cuts before they get exactly what you want... I will just tell them the next time, the last cut was good but tip the ears more, or cut the legs shorter, etc. The only thing I do NOT tolerate is hurting my dog, if you are very rough with them thats it, you got your chance, your done. If the cut isnt exactly right we can work on that the next time! :) |
