How long do you leave a top knot in? Bijou's hair is finally long enough to put up, but I only leave it in for a few hours. Do you all leave them in all the time? If not, how often are you pulling it up? I thought doing it every morning would be good, but don't know if that's right or not? Also, she hates it. I put it in pretty lose so it doesn't pull, but she rolls around a lot to try and get it out. I don't pull her hair up on weekdays as I don't want her getting the bands out and eating them. Thanks in advance for any help. |
I usually leave it in for a day. Any more than that and they get all knotted so I try to take it out before bedtime.... |
If you're talking about a ponytail/topknot, I leave mine in 24/7. I take them down, comb out and put them back in a pony usually at least a couple of times a day, first thing in the morning, then as needed during the day and last thing before bedtime. The traditional topknot, I've only used for pictures. I generally use the soft scrunchies instead of bands here around the house. If we're gong out I'll use bands and bows, as the bands do hold the hair up better than the scrunchies. |

Mine all get baths and new pony tails on Sundays. Sometimes i do a redo during the week. The tangle comes right out with a slicker brush, |
Thank you all for the top knot question and the answers. New Yorkie coming this month!! First time Yorkie Mommy and love all the info YT'ers provide. |

Gennies: If you decide to use bands, get a band cutter. I can't believe that I lived without one for so many months. |
I groom them each morning and Maggie May gets a fresh top knot each morning. When Hot Rod's hair grows back he will have the same. I use rubber bands and when I band the hair, I put the tail of the comb under and pull it as well as the opposite side of the pony tail to loosen and shape the hair. I try to cut the band off each night...usually after dinner for them and give them a massage, they love it. lol. Maggie will not eat her breakfast if her hair is hanging down. lol |
I have wondered about this too. Ella doesn't mind her hair being up at all, but i feel like if i leave it in for too long her head will get sore. I know mine does if i leave my pony tail in too long. It could be totally different though. |

Oh I'm not saying mine look great all week. But they are getting better about niot trying to rub them out. I've even gotten a couple of them to leave a bow in all week. What is a band cutter. I use a small scissor, but a seam ripper would work well also. |

Awwww, so glad I'm not going crazy by thinking the hair being pulled up all the time must hurt and for cutting the bangs out...LOL Thanks for the wonderful advise! I'm going to Walmart tomorrow to get some soft bands too. |
Daisy's hair is just now getting long enough to tie up. I found scrunchies at Wal-Mart and a few bands from a local groomer. What I have been using, until I can get a band cutter, is my seam ripper. Being very careful of eyes and hair I slip the point through one twist of the band and push up. It really is just like taking out a seam. Sometimes her boxer, big sister takes them out for her and saves me the trouble. |

I bought my band cutter from Mimimomo; first picture in second post of this thread: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...onverters.html The band cutter seems effortless for me compared to the little scissors I had been using. I no longer fear accidentally cutting hair. |

I put Brea's up in the morning and take it out at bedtime. Her little head likes the rest. :) I also use the bands from GoFetch... best I have found yet and I also cut the bands off to avoid pulling out the hair. |
Chloe is not a fan of the ponytail ...I put her hair up every morning , and she has it out about 5 minutes after that  We repeat that throughout the day :) She is getting better with leaving it in , but I still take it out every night ( if it makes it that long). . |
I also leave my top knots in for the week. Ive been hearing its not to good so I am going to try doing it daily. My dogs are pretty good with grooming and leaving there top knots in. My concern is, is it breaking the hair. On my Marlin I keep him in a panda cut (schnauzer cut) with full hair on his head. During a trip to the groomers she took it upon herself to cut off his facial her into a puppy cut and since then Ive not been able to grow out his beard and top knot to be as beautiful as before. Ive heard lots of good things about yorkie splash and shine from YT and will be ordering some soon. And def trying the daily top knot. All three of my yorkies hate for their hair to be in their face and im not big on the puppy cuts. We all enjoy bath and groom time. Gives us a chance to be alone. LOL |
I get my bands from Ebay--get like 2000 of them for less than 5 bucks and they are TINY. They are so tiny that I have a hard time stretching to get them in, but my dogs fur is so silky and soft that after they shake their heads a few times, it comes out. Anyone have any idea what the best size bands are for topknots? |
Pann is pretty good at leaving his in (and I change it every couple of days) it's his puggle sister that we have a problem with! she's always trying to pull it out! i think she's just jealous :p |
If anyone has a Family Dollar store in their area they have the non latex bands. You can get 1000 in a package for $1. They also have the little plastic barrettes with 60 in a package for $1. Daisy has very fine hair and these bands stay in all day. They are easier to stretch than the latex bands. Forgot to add that one pack contains clear and black bands and another with bright colors that match the plastic barrettes. At this price I don't feel guilty about cutting the old band out every evening. |
