Human Clippers vs. Pet Clippers Is there a difference? I usually use shears, but was thinking of trying clippers and didn't know if there was actually a difference. Also, what brand would you recommend. I don't mind spending a little if they will last a long time. Thanks! |
I just use human toenail clippers, but the pet clippers seem to look easier to handle. I don't know which brand is the best. |
If you mean hair cutting clippers, I looked at some pet clippers, and they looked exactly like the human kind, but I was wondering if there really was a difference, and what it was. |

I'm a hairdresser, and I do my own dog's grooming. I don't use the same clippers on my clients as my dogs....obviously! lol But, I do use the same brand....Wahl clippers. Next time I buy dog clippers, however, I will be purchasing Oster. I think that they are a little more durable. |
I really recommend Oster. My mother became a barber 40 years ago, she has clippers from Oster that are over 15 years old and they got some heavy use! The only reason she retired her osters is because the cord freyed (and she lost the cord to another one) and replacements for 15 yr old clippers well... that doesn't happen! Wahl is another good brand as well though, so is Andis. A good quality clipper should not run hot so I would really focus on quality (just aim for the best motor you can afford.) Sometimes the "pet clippers" run cooler, but a better motor will run cooler then any "pet clipper." Back when we had our schnauzer and we had to clip her all the time I can tell you hot speed makes all the difference. If you have a beauty supply store near by (like Sally's) they can be a great help. Easy to see the differences in the clippers and the attachments since you can touch them. Just make sure they don't market a pet clipper to you - speed should be your biggest concern (followed by attachments.) Do make sure you buy lubricant for the blades! |
