Trimming the hair on the ears... How would we go about trimming the hair on Baylee's ears so they will stand up? would we use scissors or a trimmer? |
I use clippers on mine to really cut them down close but sometimes i use scissors to trim the edges of the ear Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |

sometimes they will let you trim without to much of a problem since you have never trimed them be very careful with the clippers & scissors because they can get cut very easy, you might need help holding her the first time Betty & Micah my love:aimeeyork |

We'll try it and thanks for answering my question. hope we do ok....:( |
Bumping this because I have the same question. Just wondering how to go about the trimming... are you trimming all the hair off?? |
You shave the ears 2/3 the way down...front and back with clippers. A moustache trimmer also works. Then holding the ear erect...at the top find the edge of his ear with your index finger and thumb....use scissors to trim off the excess. |
be very careful when trimming the ears with scissors. Always point the scissors towards the tips of the ears and use the tips of the scissors to cut. this will minimize the chance of cutting the dog. Its easiest to use a clipper and just run it over the inner and outer leather of the ear if you haven't done it before and if the dog is wiggly. |
I just use the clipper and do the top 1/3 of Missy's ears on the front and the back. I hold her ear flat on my fingers to support her ear as I do it. I've never had to trim the edges with scissors, the clipper does a good job on its own. I think that trimming 2/3 of the way down would be a bit too much and would make the Yorkies ears look bigger. Just my opinion :) |
We tried it and we kinda knicked her a bit :( She's ok though and she didnt bleed more than just a drop. but i feel horrible...:( |
With scissors or clippers? |
Please remember NEVER run the clipper up the sides of the ears. This will chew up the ear. Only trim this part with scissors. |
accidentally with the clippers. i wasn't using them on the sides. she just wiggled and it knicked her. and i feel really bad. :( |
I use a little Peanut trimmer. I bought it at a beauty supply place. IT is great. I put it right up against my own skin and it does not cut so I think it is pretty safe. I trim down in a V (actually it's an up-side-down V) on both front and back of each ear -- maybe 1/3 to 1/2 way down. Then I also use the trimmer on the sides but I lay the hair out against my other hand and just put the trimmer straight down through the hair to my skin. This takes the hair away, prevents cutting the dog's skin and just makes it easier. It also gives a very nice straight cut. Now that I have said what I do -- I had better get to it! I still have not done my 5 puppies ears. They stand so straight and tall without a trim, they have let me be lazy! But they are more than ready or their first trim. |

i use scissors to cut all over... from tip of ears to tail... boots doesnt like the clippers' noise. i just think its easier and less of a fuss. :D |
I use the Peanut trimmer too. I got it at Sally's Beauty supply. My best friend is a groomer and she always uses a Peanut trimmer on my pup's ears and feet. I just used it for the first time last week and was very happy with how his ears turned out. :D This is the one I have. That's a good price too! |
I use Wahl Pocket Pro. It's tiny & doesn't make alot of noise & inexpensive. It has a 40 blade (surgical shave), so I only run it over the flat tip (1/4) of the ear (inside & out) once. NEVER run a clipper on the outer edges of the ears...it can seriously hurt & cut. I use blunt edge small scissors for the edges. |
I read all the recommendations here and ordered a Wahl Peanut from Amazon...it just came an hour ago! I'm looking at the darn thing and am totally intimidated...I've never used clippers in my life. I want to do Zoey's ears, rosebud (;)), and the bottom of her pads. Should I use the 1/8" guide or the bare blade??? You would start 1/3 of the way down and clip toward the ear tips, right? How should I do her pads? And her delicate little bud? I can't seem to play videos any more on my ancient puter, so I have to read how and pray. :( Argh. |
I'm just afraid i'll accidentally cut her again :( But i know i should trim the ears. |
BE CAREFUL!!! Look at my album and you can see what the groomer did to my baby Coco!! Gnarled up my babies ear. I am very upset about his ear. I trim it bit only about 1/4" up the side gently with the scissor. My babies will never go to a groomer again. I bought a clipper and gave them a summer cut this past weekend. They came out very good concidering it was the first time I did it. They were so cooperative. Just do alittle and when they get antsy, just stop and do more later. |

Yes, use those eyebrow shaver things you get at beauty supply store. they work great. The sound of the buzzer usually scares them. |
1 Attachment(s) The eyebrow shavers look like this. Very inexpensive, find them out drug store or beauty supply. Or google "eyebrow shaver" for internet order. |
:) I never thought about using an eyebrow trimmer before... but i succeeded with using the scissors on her ears after i bathed her. she fell asleep in the towel and i trimmed her up. and around her eyes too. she looks good :D |
