Odd hair. Is this normal? Okay, admittedly, I am NEW to the whole Yorkie ordeal. I am currently owned by a 14 week old female yorkie that I recently purchased from a local breeder. This breeder was located through Craig's List, so there was no actual recommendation. It was explained to me, by the breed that my puppy was part of a rescue. That she was one of 3 puppies...and their mom and dad, that were SOLD to her by another breeder who was quitting the business. My puppy has paperwork to state that she is a ACA registered Yorkshire Terrier, but she looks like she is a MIX. Not that this is a bad thing, I love her all the same. But later if I breed her, I don't want to give the puppies to someone UNSUSPECTINGLY thinking they're getting a pure bred and they really aren't PURE. My puppy has an elongated nose...but no teddy bear face. I figured its because she is mostly black in her face. But her back and chest have ODD HAIR! Her hair is more wavy...bordering on curly. Can someone tell me if this is normal? |
Hello welcome she sounds normal to me,they do go through so many hair changes as they mature. As for the breeding I would think she would not be up to standard to breed 1. she is a rescue 2.she is aca and should be reg.akc 3.breeders dedicated to improving the breed and preserving what so many of us love about the yorkie cultivate the breed to match certain standards that a new person to the world of breeding can't know to look for,not to mention all the health tests needed before breeding. It is ultimately your choice you did come to the right place, all the info you could need is here, so sit back when you have a little time ,read these posts and you will be well informed about your intentions. good luck and can't wait to see pics of your little one:) |
2 Attachment(s) Hi! :wavey: Welcome! :welcome4: :yorkiesar Yogi has very wavey hair. Boo's nose is a bit longer then some, but this is all a part of what makes the breed so special to me. I love how individual they all look. 1) Boo 2) Yogi |
welcome to YT.. no advice on the hair, my little guy is a yorkie poodle mix so he has few spots of crazy hair too. :) |
Punkin has strange hair in places as well. She's got a few hairs on her back that are white and stick straight up! (I think having all those puppies is what gave her white hairs! LOL) It doesn't matter to me, though. She loves me the same as someone who has a perfect doll-faced, AKC registered, $1,500 Yorkie....probably more, because she was a rescue too. |

:thumbup::thumbup::thumbup: A lot of work, time, care, and knowledge goes in to breeding...its not something to just jump head first in to....thats why im not doing it...well maybe when i retire :) If you are interested....they are plenty of breeders here that can tell you what you need to do, and how to do them correctly and morally! WELCOME TO YT! |
:welcome4: to YT! All Yorkies seem to be different...some have perfectly straight hair, some a little wavey, some bordering curling....some people spend a lot of time with products and brushing to get the hair to lay flat...there are several products out there, if you search, that may help with that....as for breeding...hmmm....did you buy the pup for the sole purpose of breeding...or will you be happy just having an unconditionally loving baby in your life? HERE is our section on Grooming (hair tips, etc) and HERE is our section on Breeding |
Normal doesn't mean standard. The Yorkshire Terrier Club of America has a standard for Yorkies, and requires that it's breeders always breed to standard, this doesn't mean that all puppies will meet standard, but they should be rather close. Those dogs who don't meet standard should not be bred, but they make perfectly adorable pets. Unfortunately many breeders are just in it for the money, and aren't actually trying to improve the breed. I hope you give serious thought before becoming a breeder, and familiarize yourself with all the problems a yorkie can have. I'm actually surprised the rescue didn't require sterilization, usually they do. Here's a link to the YTCA website, and it's definition of standard. Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. Thank you everyone for your help and advice. I was worried but am now a little more calm about it all...through your thoughtful words of encouragement. I am truly not looking to breed Little Bit. She is just a little too precious and would hate for something to go wrong and lose her. She is a rescue, and I only know what I have been told about her. If I were to breed her, it would be for my own attraction to the breed and would selfishly keep all the puppies for ME! :) A fella has just offered me 2 tea cup Yorkies and my husband is thinking he would like to take him up on the offer (a fella my husband works with has them and his wife just recently passed...yorkies were her passion, not his). But I am gonna do a little more reading here before I take on the enormous task of having my household run by 3 yorkies instead of just the one! Thank you for the warm welcomes, the great feedback and I look forward to interacting with you all again. |
