Frequency of Bathing - Contradicting Info Hi Yorkie lovers, So, how often should I bathe my little yorkie (assuming he has not rolled around in the dirt, which of course warrants an immediate bath!). I had read at least every 2 weeks in my yorkie books, however my trainer was agast when I told her I bathed him every 1 - 2 weeks. So what is the scoop yorkie experts? I have only had him for 4 months... so I am still pretty new at this. He is 11 months old now. Thanks for any advice you can give!!! Andrea |
I bathe mine once a week in the warmer months and once every 2 weeks in the winter because they arent outside getting dirty really that much |
I've read here that most do it every week, so that is what I do with Izze. It's nice, because her hair looks better this way. |
I do mine once a month in the winter & every 2 or so week's in the summer. |
Your trainer was probably aghast because for most dogs this would be way too much. Some breeds, in fact, should be bathed no more than every 6 months due to extremely dry skin, and they get stinky too in the meantime. Most of what you read on the matter refers to dogs in general, but there are huge differences among breeds, and they shouldn't be grouped together this way. Joey's breeder is a show breeder and they tend to know what is best for their dog's coats because the ring demands a gorgeous coat, and healthy skin. She recommended once a week bathing, always using a shampoo meant for dogs because they have a difference Ph than humans. Even gentle human shampoos will dry out a dog's skin. Follow shampooing with a dog's hair conditioner, and never skimp on the most important part, rinsing really well. Remember, Yorkies hair is more like human hair, they don't have an undercoat and shed like most dogs. |
Thanks... so once a week to once a month... great! Tobi looks so much more handsome when he is all clean and fluffy. Happy to know it is okay to bathe him more often! Andrea |
We do once a week to every 10 days - any longer than that and they get the "frito toes" smell!!!! It is much easier to brush a clean coat as well!!!! |
My neighbor is a groomer, she said that people bathe them way too much and wash the natural oils out of their hair. She said in the long run, bathing them too much is going to really dry them out when they're older(said she shouldn't tell me this, as that's how she makes her money). Mine are all pee pad trained, and they get baths about every 10-12 weeks. |
I give teddy a bath when he starts to smell bad. He sleeps with us so I try to keep him clean. It ranges anywhere from 1 to 4 weeks. I have some doggie spray that helps and I brush him alot too. |
Romeo gets a bath every week in the summer and every 2 weeks in the winter. I need to give him frequent baths to clean out his eye gunk and clean the pee pee from his under carriage real good. I use wipes in between, but they don't work as well as a real bath. |
There is conflicting info about this even among vets and groomers I'd think but why does your trainer care how often your pup is bathed? Ellie gets bathed when she needs one. If she is in her crate and "goes" three days in a row, then she will probably get a bath three days in a row. If she isn't dirty, she gets one every one to three weeks or thereabouts. :) |
Frito toes? That is hilarious and I know exactly what you are talking about! My trainer was asking everyone in the class. On the last day of classes, she did a grooming class, just to teach the dog owners how to clean ears, and bums and things. We talked about bathing and she asked how often the dogs get brushed and bathed. Usually when people see Tobi they ask if he was just groomed, so I figure that is a pretty good sign. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't overdoing it. (He doesn't get a bath more than every 10 days. But she had me worried and so now it has been about 3 weeks and he smells like "frito toes"! Bathtime this weekend for sure! |
You have to keep in mind, that yorkies, even though they are dogs, have hair, and not fur. How long would you let your hair go without washing?? |

I've always bathed mine once a week in summer and every week and half to two weeks in winter. I've read where you shouldn't bathe them to often to but it's never bothered mine. |
I bath Max every week. His hair is not dry. I use Buddy Wash Produsct by Cloud Star on him. We like the Lavendar and Mint. |
I wash Ollie once a week because he's a little grease monkey and if I don't, his hair stands up all over like my brother's used to in high school when he would go without bathing for as long as humanly possible. |
We bathe Biggie once a week..summer and winter. In the winter we make sure to blow dry him on the lowest setting so it does not burn him and we hold the dryer a good distance from him. We only do this for 5 minutes tops to help him dry sooner. During the summer or winter we cover him in a warm towel and switch it up for a warm blankie when the towel gets too wet. He is not allowed to go outside at all until he is fully dry. Our vet said it is Ok to bathe Biggie once a week. This was a concern for us when we first got him because my husband has bad allergies and his Doc told him to make sure we bathe the dog once a week at least. |
Once a week during the summer months and during winter, about 7-10 days. Keep an eye on their scalps, though...some yorkies are more sensitive than others and their skin could dry out. Never had a problem with mine, though! |
I bathe every Friday night. It works well for us. |

I have a hard time waiting for a week to bathe him. Especially since we are crate training. If he ever has an accident in his crate, he ends up smelling like pee. I can deal with frito toes, but not urine pits. I try to wait as long as I can though. I gave him a bath last Friday, then I gave him one yesterday. (sigh) |

Dryness and itching What is good for dryness and itching. I use Sulfadene shampoo but it only seems temporary? Any input is helpful.. |
I bathe mine every two weeks, Harry boy sleeps with us and yes they get that dorito, frito smell in the toes...LOL and his hair looks like a punk boy  my hubby gives the signal in the morning by saying "Harry boy you stink" LOL so is every two weeks for the 3 of them, we use a doggy shampoo with aloe.. Harry boy skin is very dry and needs the extra leave in conditioner too.. hugs, carmen in nj |
Bean gets the frito smell on her head @ 3 days after a bath, but I try to bathe her every week 1/2 to 2 weeks. She's 6 months now and still the greasiest dog I've ever seen! |
I bathe Odie about every 2 weeks. I use Earthbath Oatmeal & Aloe Shampoo, Earthbath Creme Rinse & Conditioner and if needed I use Earthbath Vanilla & Almond Spritz for in between. All products are 100% natural and very gentle. His coat is beautiful. I also feed a top quality dog food. |
I bathe Harley every 1-2 weeks. I use Oatmeal shampoo to keep him from getting dry/itchy skin and alternate that with Groom n' Fresh (both are from Bio Groom). I also use their Silk Creme Rinse or Oatmeal Creme Rinse. |
