I want to start grooming Carson and Bailey myself... ADVICE NEEDED!! Well after all of the horror stories I've read about groomers I've decided to start grooming the furbutts myself. Not saying that all groomers are bad, I would just feel a lot more comfortable doing it myself KNOWING they are safe. Anyways I have NO idea where to start. I've never cut a humans hair let alone a dogs. Can anyone help me with a list of what I need (maybe some links to stuff I should buy? which brands ect.) IE: Scissors, shampoo/conditioner, buzzer, ect. ANY advice would be GREATLY appreciated... Bailey is almost 6 months and is really needing a cut. THANKS!!! :) |
I started grooming all 5 of my dogs a few months ago and I started by buying a Yorkie grooming DVD by Sue, a YT member, Sue&Cricket2. She is a professional groomer and made these instructional DVD's for you to groom at home. She gives you a list of everything you might need and then shows you how to do ear cleaning, nail clipping, bathing and 3 different yorkie cuts: puppy cut, schnauzer(personality) cut and a long show coat trim. I am not affiliated with Sue but I am a happy customer and love to advertise her DVD when I can. |
Oops her user name is SueNCricket2 and here is her website Crown Royal Yorkshire Terriers, where you can buy a DVD, mention that you are a Yorkie Talk member and she usually gives you a discount. |
Thanks I will definitly look into that.. any more suggestions? :) |
the first time I ever had mitzy groomed they shaved her. I was so mad I went out that day and bought a set of wahl clippers, a how to dvd, and learned to do it myself. its very simple really. pick the length you want his/her hair, find the matching clipon trimmer thing (sorry for the lack of scientific terms), and groom. of course wash them and dry them first so not to get the clippers caught in the knots. the privates are the hardest but easy to learn. you can a pretty cheap starter kit at petsmart. mine was only 30 and came with everything to include scissors, clippers and snapons, a bag, a dvd, hairbows and ties, 3 brushes and a pick. good luck! |
i know alot of people buy their supplies at PetEdge.com Wholesale prices on exclusive dog grooming and pet supplies ;) we like petzlife products for teeth bushing/maintenance PetzLife Products Inc - Products For a Healthier Pet  you will need: a good pair of shears(scissors) clippers/trimmers. brushes. combs. shampoo/conditioner.(we like minksheen shampoo & pantene conditioner) leave-in detangler.(ice on ice) nail trimmer/file & quik stop. also.. i know you can go to a beauty supply (or somewhere that sells professional tools).. & purchase shears & clippers there! i know target/wal mart have trimmers/clippers(i don't know much about these sorry.) *(there is a sticky that Marci (marcella02) posted on grooming) http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...cerella02.html *you can do a search on here for more specific areas of grooming.. *youtube.com has videos on grooming & there are also a few people on here who have bought grooming dvds/books.. Good Luck! im sure people will chime in and add to the list of things you will need! |
